ANNOUNCEMENT: ACF Winter Mid-Atlantic at NC Wesleyan College

Post by stevebahnaman »

Greetings,

North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, NC will be hosting the Mid-Atlantic version of the 2010 ACF Winter Tournament. The tournament will be held on January 16, 2010, which is the Saturday of MLK weekend.

To register teams, please send an email to [email protected] with the number of teams your program expects to bring, as well as the number of staffers and/or buzzers you will be bringing. Buzzers and staffers are at a premium; staffers will be provided with lunch, buzzers will not. I would also like to have some kind of contact information (especially a cell phone number!) for one representative from your team so that we could get in touch with you in case there is any emergency the day of the tournament.

Packet submission: According to the ACF guidelines, any team with at least one person on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2008 is required to submit a packet in order to participate in an ACF tournament in 2009-2010. Please refer to http://www.acf-quizbowl.com/documents/packetsub.php for specifics on packet submission.

Fee Schedule: We will be using the standard ACF Fee schedule.

Base fee - $120 per team.

Packet submission discounts/penalties:

Packet submitted prior to or on:
November 22, 2009: -$50
December 6, 2009: -$25 (-$50 for teams not required to submit packets)
December 20, 2009: No penalty (-$25 for teams not required to submit packets; optional packets will not be accepted after this deadline)
December 27, 2009: +$25
January 3, 2010: +$50
After January 3, 2010: The editors may grant one or more 24-hour extensions at an additional penalty of $10 per day.

Other discounts/penalties:

Fully functional buzzer systems: -$5 per buzzer (No maximum)
Staffers: -$10 each (No maximum)
Laptop: -$5 each (Maximum 1 per team.)
Travel: -$10 per 200 miles (one way, as determined by Google Maps)
International: -$20 (For teams representing schools located in a different country than the tournament host.)
Schools new to ACF: -$25
Teams new to quizbowl: -$75
High school teams: -$50

Minimum fee: $0

For further information regarding these discounts, please consult: http://acf-quizbowl.com/documents/packetsub.php#fees

Check-in/Registration/Location:

This tournament will begin in the main room of Pearsall Library for announcements, though games will be played just down the sidewalk in our main classroom building. This announcement will be updated with further information as appropriate. We'll begin registration at 8:30 with the goal of game-on by 9:30.

We are not a big college, which means that it's easy to find your way around. The address for the college in general is 3400 N Wesleyan Blvd, Rocky Mount, NC 27804, which will get you to campus via the internet mapping utility of your choice. To find Pearsall Library, this map should help (it's marker #11, and has a big glass addition we just built).
http://www.ncwc.edu/about/tour

Parking is very easy to find on campus.

Payment and stuff:

Teams are expected to pay on Saturday morning or before. Only cash and checks (ones made out by your school or by a person on your team) will be accepted. All checks should be made out to "NC Wesleyan College". Receipts will be provided, but do let us know if you need receipts to be formatted very specifically.

FIELD UPDATE 1/14/10:

The following teams have registered by e-mailing me:
UNC-Chapel Hill
St. Anselm's
VCU A
VCU B
Georgetown Day High School
Duke
NC State
NC Wesleyan (Staffing Permitting)

If you wish to attend, please EMAIL ME DIRECTLY. You can expect field updates at a rapid pace now that I have returned from my winter break.

All the best,

If my unnecessarily-complicated plans to get to North Carolina work out, I should be playing this solo. I can only pray that Eric Mukherjee accidentally deletes every science question he edits.

Is there a field update for this? I'm still planning to go, but am unsure as to who else will be there.

The field update stands as it is; I haven't heard more from Maryland or NC State, so it looks like we're rolling with 7 teams. If this is true, we can run the tournament entirely in the library, which will be quite convenient.

If you are considering bringing more teams, joining the field very late, or any other such things, please direct correspondence to [email protected] .

We're looking forward to seeing y'all on Saturday.

Thank you Sean, and thanks to all the teams who came and played. We all enjoyed hosting you, and you made hosting very easy.

Congratulations to champions VCU A, and to Division 2 champion Georgetown Day School, represented by Matt Jackson, who won a single-round playoff versus Matt Bollinger of St. Anselm's.

Thanks beyond thanks to the following wonderful people.

So in the Charles hang eligibility hulabaloo I looked up ACF's rules, and found in Section C the following:
4. Unless special dispensation is granted, players may participate for only one school in an academic year. If some legitimate situation arises in which a player might have good
reason to play for a new school in a second tournament, such as transferring between semesters or a branch campus forming its own team, then the editors of the second tournament may choose to grant eligibility.
Can someone explain to me then how Tommy and Sarah, who play for Maggie Walker at everything (including a prior ACF tournament this season) are now VCU players?

In accordance with the rules, I petitioned the head tournament editor for dispensation to switch their ACF affiliations in advance of the tournament, and it was granted.

I am a little confused. Did a current Maggie Walker student (or students) play on a team along with VCU players or did the entire team consist of Maggie Walker players? This situation is strange to me because either: (1) it is puzzling why a team exclusively of Maggie Walker players would call themselves "VCU" or (2) even more puzzling why a high school player would be able to play on a team with college players when, supposedly, ACF rules don't allow that. When I tried to arrange to have one of my high school players play on a team with high school players from another school, I was told that ACF rules did not allow students from different schools to play together on a team UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Can someone please explain this situation to me? Do these students attend VCU and Maggie Walker?

The players are taking dual-enrollment classes which make them VCU students, and they are playing for VCU because they are VCU students.

Combining players from different schools is still not allowed.

The players take dual credit courses through VCU and thus are technically students at both Maggie Walker and VCU and thus eligible to play for VCU. Granted, I am somewhat curious as to whether they'll be eligible to return to playing for Maggie Walker at ACF Regionals & Nationals. My guess, given Maggie Walker's previously expressed plans** on play ACF Nationals and a great deal of speculation that they'll win DII there, is that they will*.

*Assuming they get additional special dispensations to go back to playing for Maggie Walker, of course.

** I thought there had been such plans. Given the below comment by Matt Weiner, I have mistaken speculation along the lines of "Maggie Walker could easily win ACF Nationals DII" for reality.

Edit: Apologies for the subsequently unnecessary post.

The VCU team that played at ACF Winter is not in contention for the D2 title because Evan and Andrew Alexander played ACF Nationals 2009.

And because Evan is in his third year, and Andrew is a grad student, and both of them also played Nationals in 2008.

I would be very surprised if VCU were to enter a B team in Nationals this year or otherwise be eligible for D2 in any fashion. All I've heard about high schools playing Nationals is that State College plans to do so, but I'm not really involved in the tournament so there may be things going on that I'm not aware of.
