The Quizbowl Club of Notre Dame is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a mirror of Princeton’s Buzzerfest on March 27th, 2010. This tournament will be a regular-difficulty, packet submission tournament, head edited by Kunle Demuren, with assistance from other members of the Princeton team. Packets are required of all teams, except for those composed entirely of players who did not play a college tournament before THIS academic year.

FEES:
+$100 - Base fee per team
-$50 - Packet submitted by January 23rd.
-$25 - Packet submitted by February 6th.
+$0 - Packet submitted by February 20th.
+$25 - Packet submitted by March 6th.
+$50 - Packet submitted by March 13th.
+$100 - Packet submitted by March 20th (and you should really let me know if this is going to be you).
+$10 per day - packets after the 20th... and I still reserve the right to deny your tournament attendance if there are major problems with your packet at this point.
-$5 - Working buzzers discount
-$10 - Competent moderator discount
+$15 - Formatting penalty for formatting your questions incorrectly.
-$10 - Travel discount for every 200 miles traveled.
-$40 - High school teams.
Minimum fee per team: $45
(If you are not required to submit a packet, but wish to do so, you can discuss further discounts with Kunle.)

Packet distribution and formatting guidelines can be found here, in the original announcement thread.

REGISTRATION:
To register, send an email to accnd AT nd DOT edu. Please indicate how many teams you're bringing (or interested in bringing) and what discounts you think you apply for (such as the number of moderators and buzzers you're bringing). If you will also be submitting a packet, also email Kunle so he knows how many packets to expect.

Further tournament details will be announced closer to the date of the tournament.

Why the lack of ACF rules on this? Are you trying to discourage young teams? This actually may dissuade me from getting MSU to attend.

I want to ensure that we have enough packets to work with (if we get more mirrors/teams, I will consider modifying this requirement). In any case, players who have been playing for (at least) an entire year should presumably be able to produce a passable packet. If you feel that your school deserves an exception to this rule, e-mail me and if appropriate, we can work something out.

You should also put an Illinois team under the vague rumblings banner (I'll edit this post when I know if we got one for sure).

At least one of my teammates for the next two weekends is also interested in this tourney, for it falls during the UIC spring break. You may add UIC as a team instead of just myself as the usual free agent.

Watching rookie coaches Rex Ryan & Jim Caldwell now,
Rom

I guess you can move us out of the vague rumblings list, since we are definitely going to this with 2-3 teams.

Just a reminder: $0 packet deadline is less than 48 hours away.

UIUC will be sending a team to this tournament. Our packet will be delayed slightly.

EDIT: Changed packet timeline.

So upthread I said we'd be attending this "in some capacity." There's a pretty good chance that capacity will be "in spirit" since this on the second weekend of our spring break. I will try to get a firm commitment one way or the other this week and let you know.

Cross-posted from main thread:

Just a reminder that the last deadline for submissions is this Saturday. I'm willing to cut some slack if necessary, but you absolutely need to let me know by e-mail if you need it. Also, since this has been a problem with some submissions: look at the formatting guidelines in the original announcement, especially: 1 inch margins, 10 point, Times New Roman font. If your packet is not formatted in this fashion, and I make the adjustments and your questions come up short, I will send it back for you to fix.

Illinois is more of a "?" than "for sure coming"

I was unable to submit a packet on behalf of UIC, so I would like to offer my services as a free agent to help to fill out the field. I would be willing to drive any Chicagoland players to South Bend to return the favor when Ryan Westbrook picked up four Michiganders for last weekend's HI 2 mirror at UIUC.

Happy very belated Pi Day,
Rom

Rom - I believe that Princeton's wishes are that teams that meet the packet requirements must submit a packet to play. Unless I hear something different from Kunle, you would be ineligible to play

I haven't heard anything from Depauw or Chicago since their last posts in this thread, so I'm assuming that neither will be fielding a team. With that in mind, here's what I have.

Field Update
Wooster - 2 teams
Michigan - 2 teams, 3 buzzers
Team Illinois - 1 team, 1 buzzer
Illinois/Rom - 1 teams, 2 buzzers
House Team - 2 teams, 1 buzzers
Totals: 8 teams, 8 buzzers

Staff:
Greg Peterson, 1 buzzer

Packet requirements are by team, not by player, for every tournament I have ever known. Thus, if Rom wants to be a free agent to join a team that has already submitted a packet, he should be allowed to.

We are going to bring 3, and can bring another slightly broken one if necessary.

Charlie, I'm not an idiot. Perhaps I should clarify - I had reason to believe that there was some chance that all teams present would have 4+ players on them. If that were the case, then Rom would not be able to join a team. I would rather not have him drive out to Notre Dame only to find out that he was unable to play. However, since Michigan has since said that they would be able to have a broken team, I would welcome Rom joining a Michigan team.

I actually mean buzzers here and not teams. We don't know whether we will have just the two packet writing teams or an additional freshman team at this point in time.

You'll know for sure by tomorrow night if Illinois will have a team at this event. In the case that Illinois does not field a team of its own, I would still be interested in joining a team that has already submitted a packet as a free agent or (maybe) staffing.

EDIT: If I go to Notre Dame in any capacity, I'll have 2 buzzer systems with me.

EDITx2: We're coming.

Bryce - I emailed you about this last night, but Michigan will only have 2 teams, rather than 3.

Do you have a building/room number for Saturday?

I'll be sending out an email soon, but it wouldn't hurt to put the information here as well.

The tournament will be taking place in Hayes-Healy, building 1082 on the map linked below. According to This Website, Parking Lot B1, located directly south of the stadium, is free for the public on weekends. I would recommend you park there - there isn't a closer parking lot on campus. It is fairly likely that you will need to enter through the north doors. Registration will begin at 8:30 in room 127, and we hope to be beginning rounds by 9:00. If I have not heard from you by 9:00, then we will get started without you. This is where my phone number will go in the email.

Campus Map

Let me know if I've forgotten anything.

What if I were offered a spot on an incomplete team that did not have to write a packet? Would that retroactively make that team required to have submitted a packet? I never mind paying any entry fees and/or penalties by check on site. For GPS programming, what is the street address for the Hayes-Healy Center? http://www.nd.edu says Notre Dame, Indiana 46556 - 5645 only.

Happy belated vernal equinox,
Rom

Rom - I will let Kunle give a final answer, but I would assume that you would not be allowed to join a team that has not submitted a packet. Thus, you would only be allowed to play if Illinois or Michigan is short a player.

The vast majority of Notre Dame's campus is not on a street, and Hayes-Healy is no exception. However, the parking lot to which I directed you is literally adjacent to Notre Dame Stadium. If you input 1600 Edison St. into your directions, it should get you to almost the right place - you would then need to turn left on Eddy St.

The University of Illinois team is looking for two (2) more players to join them at this event at this time (though we may have one more team member join us if he gets back in time). As we have submitted a packet, we would be able to take the current free agents (Rom and Greg) if they still would like to play. I'll need both of them to send me an email at [email protected] so we coordinate travel plans and what not for this tournament. I'll be departing from my house up in Gurnee, IL, so I can pick people up along I-94 on the way to Notre Dame.

I have joined the UIUC team. Can you recommend any restaurants near the Hayes-Healy Center? To whom should checks be written? Do any other CDT teams realize that UND is in EDT?

Congratulations to Tennessee on its first men's elite 8,
Rom
