ANNOUNCEMENT: T-Party mirror at VCU (2/14/2010)

Posted: Thu Dec 10, 2009 7:11 pm
by Frater Taciturnus
The Virginia Commonwealth University will be hosting T-Party on February 14, 2010. The tournament will take place in Hibbs Hall on the Monroe Park Campus.

To register teams, please send an email to berryg@vcu,edu and, just in case, georgeberry292@hotmail,com with the number of teams your program expects to bring, as well as the number of staffers and/or buzzers you will be bringing. Emergency contacts for at least one team member is highly appreciated.

PACKET SUBMISSION DETAILS

In a submitted packet, the editors demand to see:
Rob Carson wrote: 5/5 literature (1/1 American, 1/1 British, 1/1 European, 1/1 World, 1/1 additional of any category)
5/5 history (1/1 American, 3/3 European [of which one question is on British history and one is on ancient history], 1/1 World)
5/5 science (1/1 physics, 1/1 chemistry, 1/1 biology, 1/1 other science [math, CS, earth science, astrophysics; don't do two of the same], 1/1 additional of any category or difficult-to-categorize topics)
3/3 RMP (1/1 mythology, 1/1 religion, 1/1 philosophy; try to ensure that your mythology is about dudes and deeds and your religion is about worship)
3/3 fine arts (1/1 painting, 1/1 non-opera music, 1/1 other arts [opera, architecture, sculpture, dance, photography, film, jazz, questions about Bob Dylan if you are Chris White; please do one vis and one aud])
2/2 social science (at least one question must be geography; no more than 1/1 can be geography)
1/1 trash
24/24 total
Here's the submission schedule:

12/20: -$50 (-$75 for teams that don't have to submit by ACF guidelines) -- if you gift-wrap your packet and mail it to Andy or Rob, you are discounted whatever that would cost you because it would make them ever so happy
1/3: -$25 (-$50 for teams that don't have to submit by ACF guidelines)
1/17: $0 (-$25 for teams that don't have to submit by ACF guidelines)
1/24: +$25
1/31: +$50
2/7: +$100
After 2/7, editors will grant twenty-four hour extensions one at a time; each one will cost $10.

Here's something that is a little unclear sometimes: when does this amorphous blob we call "12/20" end? This is particularly difficult because of time zones. So here it is: if your packet isn't in one of their sets of hands by 4:00am Central time on the night of the deadline day (so your clock would, technically, read 4:00am 12/21, for example), then you have missed the deadline. There won't be leniency here because leniency gets exploited. End of story.

DO I HAVE TO SUBMIT A PACKET? As per ACF guidelines, if your teams has one or more players on it who's played a regular, collegiate, academic tournament before September of 2008, then you have to submit a packet.

FEES:
100 per team
-5 per buzzer set
-10 staffer
-10 for every 200 miles one way
Shorthanded: players playing solo or doubles should email me!

FURTHER INFORMATION: Check the main T-Party thread for updates regarding the tournament; for information about this site specifically, email me at berryg@vcu,edu.

Hope to see you there,
George Berry

Will Mike Bentley's visual tournament be run here as well?

That's a possibility, and I wouldn't mind doing that. That having been said, people should register for this, and if a lot of people want to do that, I will see what I can do.

If I end up coming down for this, I would definitely be interested in the visual tournament.

I figured I'd bump this thread; who's interested in playing this tournament? Bunches of teams down here for the picking; I'd be surprised not to see them in attendance.

I am definitely interested in playing this, and I may be able to convince Jacob to do so as well. However, Matt isn't going to be available, so we're looking for teammates.

The tournament will be in Hibbs Hall.

Some quick notes:

-The nominal address of the building is "900 Park Ave, Richmond VA" if you need to put something into your map software of choice, but be aware that Hibbs does not actually face the street, so you will have to park and then walk to the area where the building is in order to find it. I suggest printing out the appropriate campus maps and bringing them along--note that Hibbs is directly across from the Cabell Library, which will probably be easier for you to find if you have not been to the VCU campus before.
-It is almost certain that the one and only door to Hibbs which will be unlocked for the weekend is the door on the north (interior) side of the vestibule that is on the library side of the building. We will endeavor to have signs up that point you to this door.
-On Sundays, parking on the street is free and available in most places around the campus; the best place to park for access to Hibbs is on one of the residential streets such as Park Avenue, Floyd Avenue, or West Avenue that branch off Harrison Street to the west near the Hibbs/library area. If you cannot find a space in that area, then you can try parking on Floyd Avenue near the Commons, or, further south, on Main Street. If all else fails, you should use the parking deck at Harrison and Broad, which is about three blocks north of the tournament building and will charge you somewhere between zero and five dollars to park all day on a Sunday.
-We won't be providing breakfast. There are 7-11s along Harrison at both the Main Street and Grace Street intersections, which are three blocks south and north of the tournament building respectively. If you prefer to sit down and/or eat hot food, the Village Cafe at Harrison and Grace is open for breakfast.

If a ride is arranged and you would like me to join your team, I would be happy to do so.

I agreed to an offer to team us up with Stephen and Diana yesterday. Sorry about that.

So hearing about mention of open teams: Open teams should email Andy, Rob, and me with the desired lineup to be approved on a case by case basis.

Bumping to repeat the question asked earlier: will Mike Bentley's visual tournament will be run and if so, when? I would be interested in playing were it to happen.

Yes it will be run at some point during the day depending on what works best for the running of the actual tournament.

So yeah, I should now be able to come to this. Since I don't want to disrupt the oh-so-glorious harmony in the Anselm's/TJ team, I'll be playing solo.

Also people should go ahead and sign up for the visual tournament so I know how many are playing.

I assume this is just a copy-paste thing, but the parking details mention Saturday - the tournament is still on Sunday, right?

Hey, so FCPS has reclaimed Monday because of snow, so the Northern VA caravan is not going to be able to stay late on Sunday. Is there any chance of running a few rounds of the visual tournament during lunch?

Excellent. You can put me, Stephen, and Diana down for that, then.

Maryland cleared the field to win this.

Arts tournament and pyramid were both won by Chris Ray.

Shit. I was beating him when I left. Curse FCPS.

So yeah, this tournament was pretty good. Thanks to VCU for hosting everything and getting through fast enough to let us play at least some of the visual tournament; it was pretty much the highlight of my weekend.

When no one was looking, Matt Bollinger took twenty-four powers. He took 24 powers. That's as many per game as Brendan Byrne, and more than anyone else on this set so far. And that's really impressive.

How did Matt Bollinger sudden become better at quiz bowl than Brendan Byrne?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah...

*cough*

Yeah, no. I got kinda lucky and had a strong performance, but Brendan (as well as every top 25 collegiate player) is pretty clearly better than I am.
