ACF Regionals at Columbia University

Post by Columbia Quiz Bowl »

Columbia University will be hosting the Northeast Mirror of ACF Regionals on Saturday February 20th, 2010.

As per ACF Rules, any team with a player who has played collegiate quizbowl prior to September 1, 2008 must write a packet. All packets are to be submitted to ACF directly at [email protected]. Deadlines, fees, the distribution, formatting, and other guidelines can be found here: http://acf-quizbowl.com/documents/packetsub.php

To register, e-mail Jason Pflueger ([email protected]) with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers. More specific details and further information will be provided at a later date, but for now, plan on getting to Columbia between 8 and 8:45am, with the goal of beginning rounds at 9:00.

For quick reference, packet fees are:

1/10 -25 (-50 for optional packets)
1/24 0 (-25 for optional packets)
1/30 +25
2/14 +50

Tournament Fees are:

Base Fee: $120/team
Buzzer Discount: -$5/set
Staffers: -$10 each
Laptop: -$5 (max 1)
Travel: -$10/200 miles one way
International: -$20
New ACF Team: -$25
New Quiz Bowl Team: -$75
High School Team: -$50

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder to e-mail [email protected] to register as soon as you're able. We're trying to work out some logistics, which is hard to do well without a rough estimate on the number of teams. Thanks!

Penn will be bringing at least one team to this. We...uh... should probably get started on our packet.

Jason,

So there are 2 or 3 ex-Dartmouth players in the NYC area, who would like to help out at the tournament if you want/need staffing help. Let me know if this would be cool with you.

Thanks,
Dominic

As of 2/7/10 the field is:

RPI: 1 team
NYU: 2 teams
Hunter HS: 1 team
Dartmouth: 1-2 teams
Yale: 2 teams
Penn: 1 team

We're still missing a lot of the usual schools, so I imagine the field will still be growing quite a bit. If you could let me know of your intent to play by Tuesday night, that would help us out immensely as Wednesday morning I am meeting with Columbia events officials to go over the logistics for our event. The more accurate I can be in terms of team numbers and amount of rooms required the better.

Also, Dominic, it'd be great if you guys are willing to help out! Can you send me an e-mail address I can contact you at as the date gets closer? Thanks!

It looks like the prospect of playing a rescheduled SCT is going to lure us to Maryland instead. I, personally, was very much looking forward to playing quizbowl in NYC! But alas, 'twas not to be. Best of luck.

You know, if it was just up to me, I'd go to Columbia anyway. But that wouldn't be fair to teammates who want to play SCT.

Hi everyone,

You should have just received an e-mail from me with details for this weekend. I'll reiterate the more important parts here:

The Field:
RPI: 1 team (1 buzzer)
NYU: 2 teams
Hunter HS: 1 team (1 buzzer)
Yale: 2 teams (1 buzzer)
Brown: 2 teams (2 buzzers)
Harvard: 1 team (1 staffer)
Rutgers: 1 team

Right now, we're planning on fielding a house team as well and doing an 11-round full round robin with 1 bye each. Registration starts at 8, with the goal of beginning matches at 9. The tournament will take place in Lerner Hall (115th and Broadway).

We should be ok as far as buzzers are concerned (we have 2 of our own, which brings us to 7 sets), but if you have one to bring and it's not listed here, we'd appreciate it.

If you're paying by check, please make it out to "Columbia University" and in the memo, put "Quiz Bowl-ACF". If you can't bring it with you, you can mail it to:

Columbia Quiz Bowl
c/o Student Development and Activities
515 Lerner Hall
MC 2601
2920 Broadway
New York, NY 10027

We can also accept cash if you have it.

See you Saturday!

EDIT: NYU is only sending 1 team now.

Illinois A defeated Mich A in the first game of an advantaged final something like 385-200. That's all I really remember, I assume stats will be posted soon.

EDIT: Columbia looks a lot like Columbus, post has been reported for removal.

Both Brown and we had one loss going into the playoffs. We beat them in a close game to give us an advantaged final. They creamed us in the first finals match. Then we came back from behind to win the second finals match, winning the tournament.

Many thanks to Columbia for hosting this. The tournament was very enjoyable. Logistics were generally quite smooth. And accompanying and singing opera and G&S excerpts with Rebecca and Kevin on one of the many pianos in Lerner Hall was the best ever way to spend a rebracketing period. I look forward to seeing Columbia host more tournaments in future.

As John said, Yale A was pretty much entangled in a fight to the death with Brown throughout the tournament - Brown beat Yale A in the preliminary round-robin for a tied record, Yale A beat Brown in the playoff bracket to come ahead by one game, Brown beat Yale A in the first tiebreaker, and then Yale A beat Brown in the second tiebreaker - but they came out ahead in the end.

Each team played 8 games in the preliminary round-robin (which was balanced out by a combined Columbia/Dartmouth Alumni team that everyone played once and then was removed for the playoff bracket), rebracketed into a four-team upper and lower brackets where they played round-robin again. So, everyone played at least 11 games (NYU had to leave before the playoff bracket matches, so their matches were counted as a forfeit), and Yale A and Brown had to go the distance to 13 games.

Standings and tournament statistics are located here. There appear a few minor errors in entry (e.g. Nick playing only 4 games) that I will try to iron out and update this week.

Thanks to the editors for helping organize this tournament, and to the teams for participating!

It would also be nice to get an explanation for the following two things:

1. The existence of a joint Dartmouth/Columbia team. Someone correct me if we ever authorized such a thing but I don't believe that we did.
2. NYU's early departure. In the past, NYU has played tournaments at Harvard to completion, so I'm baffled by their leaving early a tournament for which their commute is literally "catch the 1 train downtown."

Just a few comments/updates:

-First, apologies to Ian Eppler. (I guess we were impressed by his astronomy knowledge.)

-A new version of the stats with Round Report should have been uploaded and stats/names should all be fixed.

-We are not sure why NYU left before the finals brackets.

-The "Dartmouth/Columbia" team was a house team created to make the numbers work better in an effort to have people play as many games as possible. They were removed before re-bracketing into the finals, and were never eligible to win, either as a team or individually.

I get that this was an honest mistake, but I really have to emphasize this: mixed/open teams are not allowed at ACF events, except by special exemption from the head editor, which is usually only given in the case that allowing such a team to play would substantially improve the field. As far as I know, Chris was the only Columbia player on that team, and I really don't think that having him not play would have made things particularly difficult for anyone else. Please don't do this in the future.
