ANNOUNCEMENT: Spring Offensive at HSNCT (5/29/2010)

Post by Skepticism and Animal Feed »

This is an announcement for Spring Offensive, an all-history subject tournament to take place on May 29, 2010, which is the Saturday of HSNCT. The tournament will run after the completion of HSNCT's Saturday rounds and will presumably take place in the Hyatt Regency O'Hare Hotel in beautiful Rosemont, IL.

What to Expect
Spring Offensive will feature rounds of 20 tossups and 20 bonuses, all of which will be in the "History" category. There will be questions on all sub-fields of history (including American, European, World, Political, Military, Social, etc.). The mysterious wide-spread rumor that this will be a military-history only tournament is completely false.

The set should be broadly similar to my previous history subject tournaments, such as July Crisis and EuroFest.

Writing Requirements
There are absolutely no writing requirements. The set will be entirely written by myself and by other editors under my command.

Who Can Play
Spring Offensive is primarily intended for HSNCT moderators and HSNCT players, but will be open to anyone, including coaches and members of the masters circuit.

The rounds will be written so as to both challenge experienced players and be accessible to novices and high school players.

Cost
The tournament will probably cost $10/person, with a 50% discount for HS players and coaches. There will probably also be a discount for players who come in WWI-era historical dress.

Tournament General Staff
Generalfeldmarschall Bruce von Arthur
"Der General" Donald Taylor
- Hauptmann Shantanu Jha
- Hauptmann Ahmad Ragab
-- Unteroffizier Andrew Chrzanowski
-- Unteroffizier Sandy Huang

Will play as well. If there are teams of some sort, I'd be in the market to team up with someone who knows their Euro history.

Ideally, I'd like people to form teams beforehand.

Realistically, HSNCT side events tend to be organized ad hoc the night of. We might not know who is playing until right before the tournament starts, and I certainly wouldn't want to exclude anyone just because they only decided to play at the last minute.

We plan on going to Chicago, and I'd actually like to help moderate this event, if possible. Playing would be a hoot but i'd rather let good high school and college players (who are no doubt better than me) play instead. Moderating this might be fun. Let me know if you need the help.

I should note that I'm aware that the bonuses in July Crisis and Euro Fest were far too difficult and will be working to fix that. So you should expect bonus conversion to increase at this event.

For tossup difficulty, you should expect a mix of the following:

* a pinch of tossups on really hard things (i.e., that previous were only mid-level clues) that are still somewhat canonical, but that would be too hard for ACF Nats
* a generous helping of ACF Nationals-level tossups
* a substantial amount of hard tossups on easy things; i.e., difficult and never-before-heard early clues, but the words after "ANSWER:" will be something that pretty much everyone has heard of

So there should be something for everybody. I want this to be remembered as the finest history subject tournament that ever existed, and part of that will be ensuring that everyone -- from hardcore masters circuit types to casual high school players -- can get some enjoyment and points out of this set.

Bump.

This event is still happening and writing has begun in earnest.

I am pleased to announce that Sandy Huang and Andrew Chrzanowski have been commissioned as members of the tournament's General Staff, each with the initial rank of Unteroffizier. I've gotten in touch with some of the other people who volunteered to write to see if they're still interested, so my hope is that the General Staff will expand.
