ANNOUNCEMENT: Centre T-Party Mirror 2/13/2010

Hi, this is just an announcement for the Centre College mirror of Harvard's T-Party tournament. It's a packet submission event, with those details cross posted from the main thread here:
Andy Watkins wrote:PACKET SUBMISSION DETAILS

We want packets. We don't (here's the part where I say "don't" again, but somehow you miss it both times) want packets to come in the week before the tournament. That is quite unpleasant! You wouldn't want me to start coming up with particularly horrifying things to compare it to, now would you? In a submitted packet, we'd like to see:

5/5 literature (1/1 American, 1/1 British, 1/1 European, 1/1 World, 1/1 additional of any category)
5/5 history (1/1 American, 3/3 European [of which one question is on British history and one is on ancient history], 1/1 World)
5/5 science (1/1 physics, 1/1 chemistry, 1/1 biology, 1/1 other science [math, CS, earth science, astrophysics; don't do two of the same], 1/1 additional of any category or difficult-to-categorize topics)
3/3 RMP (1/1 mythology, 1/1 religion, 1/1 philosophy; try to ensure that your mythology is about dudes and deeds and your religion is about worship)
3/3 fine arts (1/1 painting, 1/1 non-opera music, 1/1 other arts [opera, architecture, sculpture, dance, photography, film, jazz, questions about Bob Dylan if you are Chris White; please do one vis and one aud])
2/2 social science (at least one question must be geography; no more than 1/1 can be geography)
1/1 trash
24/24 total

Here's the submission schedule, based off the date we imagine most mirrors will take place, 2/13:

12/20: -$50 (-$75 for teams that don't have to submit by ACF guidelines) -- if you gift-wrap your packet and mail it to one of us, you are discounted whatever that would cost you because it would make me SO HAPPY
1/3: -$25 (-$50 for teams that don't have to submit by ACF guidelines)
1/17: $0 (-$25 for teams that don't have to submit by ACF guidelines)
1/24: +$25
1/31: +$50
2/7: +$100
After 2/7, we'll grant twenty-four hour extensions one at a time; each one will cost $10.

Here's something that is a little unclear sometimes: when does this amorphous blob we call "12/20" end? This is particularly difficult because of time zones. So here it is: if your packet isn't in one of our hands by 4:00am Central time on the night of the deadline day (so your clock would, technically, read 4:00am 12/21, for example), then you have missed the deadline. There won't be leniency here because leniency gets exploited. End of story.

DO I HAVE TO SUBMIT A PACKET? As per ACF guidelines, if your teams has one or more players on it who's played a tournament before September of 2008, then you have to submit a packet.
We'll be charging a base fee of $100, with ten dollar discounts for buzzers and staffers. Teams without official school funding or who are playing short should email me about working out a discounted rate.

Thanks,
Joe Wells

Are there any field updates?

Also are there any plans to run Mike Bentley's visual art tournament?

Also, if you do mirror the visual arts tournament there would be at least two Michigan people who would play it.

Can we have a field update, Joe?

When will we need to arrive at Centre to register, start playing, etc?

WKU will be there with one team, although if the other people interested in going aren't able to make it, it will just be me playing solo.

grayson77 wrote:Can we have a field update, Joe?

Here's what I have thus far:

Ballard High School (0-1 team)
Dunbar (2 teams)
Grayson County (1 team)
Danville High (0-1 team)
Michigan (2-3 teams)
Ohio State (1 team)
Illinois (2 teams)
Louiville (0-2 teams)
Western Kentucky (1 team)

As for the visual arts tournament, I know of a couple people from various schools that are interested.

If you're attending, please let me know your final team count and the number of buzzers you can bring as soon as possible, just so I know what I'm looking at as far as my staff is concerned. My email is joe (daht) wells (at) centre (daht) edu.

I'm almost certain Michigan will have 2 teams; we'll know for sure by Wednesday night. We can bring 3-4 sets of buzzers (the fourth doesn't work so well, though).

We can bring up to 2 buzzer sets (providing no buzzers are broken before the date of this mirror).

The visual arts tourney will be mirrored here as well. I'm not sure on the price yet, but it will likely be $10, as my team needs the money.

We'll for sure have 2 teams, and I think 3 buzzers. We'll probably have 2-3 players for the visual arts tournament, and I can moderate for that if needed.

Our coaches have decided that it is in our best interest to not attend this tournament.
Two of our starters have prior obligations and we do not see the point competing against teams of this caliber when we are shorthanded.
We would love to come to any high school or college events at Centre in the future.

hi everyone,
while duPont Manual High School can't make it, a team eerily similar to Manual will be there. (and we might bring buzzers)

and as a clarification we'll probably be bringing only 1 team.

oh, and we might have some people for the Visual Arts Tournament

Thanks

I will be there on an "open team" with Scott Blain and Cole Phelps from Grayson County, along with a guy who graduated from Grayson County in 2007. We'll have 2 people for the Visual Arts tournament and will be bringing a buzzer system.

I haven't played quizbowl in 9 months (although that's better than the 3 years the other guy on our team has gone without playing) so I'm looking forward to getting back into competition.

The field as it stands:

Dunbar A
Dunbar B
DuPont Mañuel
Michigan A
Michigan B
Illinois A
Illinois B
Ohio State A
Ohio State B
Grayson County '09

If any of these schools/teams hasn't received the email I sent out on Monday about where we are meeting, please email me so I can forward it to you. Otherwise, I hope to see you on Saturday!

Why isn't Danville sending a team? It's not like they have to travel far. Or at all.

Since Dowell and Rachel are still sophomores, playing this tournament would mean they'd need to write packets for ACF Fall their senior year.

I think this is wrong. ACF people, help?

If this does apply to high schoolers, I'm still not sure that's such a bad thing. I'd have to think that having writing experience before college would be a benefit. I know I sure wish I'd written some in High School. It would be one less thing I'd have to learn from scratch over the next couple years.

Danville should enter a team.
They would have to travel about 10 minutes or less and would get some great experience for their relatively young team.
I'm sure Rachel and Dowell wouldn't have any trouble writing a packet, certainly not by the time they are seniors.
I have written packets numerous times, and won't mind submitting them when I'm a senior or maybe even next year.

I have the same question myself. If the trash tournament does not start at an obscene time (~9) then a few Michigan people would love to play it, but I really don't see how that would be possible.

Provided some contingent of Illinois people stay and play Trashtwostrophe, I can moderate for that (though don't count on it, as some of us have written for the set, like me).

I'm not entirely sure. I mean, if everything goes smoothly, it shouldn't run that late. If the main event takes forever, I'll probably take a vote afterward to see which of the two side events people want to play, and just run that one.

I'll state it now that by some chance Trashtwostrophe gets played instead of the art tourney, call me so I can go into hiding. The last thing I want is for a certain member of my team to show up at my dorm room at 3am ready to reenact the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Seriously, though, unless you're getting unbelievable amounts of interest for Trashtwostrophe and little interest for Eyes, please run the art tournament for the sake of my existence.

Or, on actual considerations, you might consider that you already announced that you're going to run the visual art tournament after the main tournament, so you should probably keep your promises to your field (tempting as it doubtless is to break your work and run a high school trash tournament instead!)
Also, there's really no way you're going to be able to run three tournaments like this in a single day.

I'd only find it tempting if more people want to play the trash than the visual arts (which I don't think is going to happen). The trash thing is more of a "hey, when we're done if people still want to do this, I have permission to run this" type deal.

Our team seems to be missing from the "team detail" and "individual detail" pages, so it would be nice if that were among your corrections.
Also, could you turn on round report?

Thanks for hosting a very fun tournament. The moderators could have used more practice, but that's to be expected for the first event hosted anywhere. I generally liked the set quite a bit, and (watching) the arts tournament was a lot of fun too.
