ACF Regionals Mid-America at WUStL (2/27/10)

Washington University in St. Louis is hosting an ACF Regionals site on February 27th, 2010. Note that this date is not an error: we are running one week later than the rest of ACF Regionals.

I am serving as tournament director for this site. To register, please e-mail me at [email protected] with the number of teams, and packet authors and divisional status (DI, DI undergrad, or DII undergrad with no ACF Nationals experience) for each team.

Everything you need to know about ACF Regionals is either here or here, but to recap, if anyone on your team played college quizbowl before September 1, 2008, you need to send a packet to [email protected] sometime before February 7 if you want to play.

Fees are as follows:
Base Fee: $100
Buzzer discount: -$10, max one per team
Staffer discount: -$10
Laptop discount -$5, max one per team
Travel discount: -$10 per 200 miles from your origin to our location according to Google Maps
New ACF school: -$25
High school: -$50
New quizbowl school: -$25

February 7th is the $50 packet penalty deadline. Most teams in this region have not submitted packets and were probably discouraged from doing so by the lack of an announced regional site. We apologize greatly for this inconvenience, though we do note that a Missouri site was promised in the main ACF Regionals thread long before we ourselves were specifically designated as hosts. We have set our base fee below that of sites such as Columbia and Irvine to offset at least part of this inconvenience for teams.

Logistical information coming soon.

I'm talking to some other people at WKU about this, but nothing is definite right now.

I'm guessing you'd almost certainly be exempt from writing a packet, if that helps.

Mizzou confirmed on Saturday that they're sending one team. Wash U can send at least one rookie house team not burdened with a packet requirement. Would we be clear to send more than one, including persons otherwise required to write, to fill out a field of four (to six) teams?

Just out of curiosity, why the 5-hour drive instead of the 3-hour drive?

See above for the current field list. Details of place and time will come out after practice on Wednesday night or when school administration responds yo John's request for rooms for the event. That said, expect a 9:00 start and a small number of rounds before lunch not long after noon.

If we do find a ride (and we'll know tomorrow), that could be fun, whatever it specifically is.

Yeah, I'm really glad about this. Gordon, do you think anyone would be interested in at least playing some kind of shootout on that lit set, even if it's not a full tournament?

The literature event will depend on how long we have rooms and staff available. I might be able to give you no better than a game-time decision on that -- I just haven't thought much about it yet. We're looking at a field size giving us 13 or 14 rounds of Regionals, though.

With a 6-team field, we are running a double round robin followed by rebracketing into 3 playoff brackets for a single round robin within brackets. A final (with advantage as appropriate) will then be played if needed.

Registration will open at 8:00 am to enable a 9:00 am start time. (That start time is firm. If at least one player from one team in a first-round game is present by 9:07, the game will begin.) We should complete five rounds, break for lunch, and return by 1:30 for the remainder of the games.

The tournament will be held in Eads Hall (building #30 on this map). The meeting at the beginning of the day will be in Room 203.

If you have automobiles, put them in the garage underneath the Danforth University Center (building 25; approach from Forsyth Blvd.) at a cost of $5 for the whole day. I don't know of any realistic free parking options on campus or feasibly close to campus.

Lunch is available at the same Danforth University Center, at Subway in Umrath Hall, and a few blocks north of the University at the various establishments on and adjoining Delmar Blvd. More details on options for eating will be provided on Saturday.

EDIT: Meeting location moved to Eads 203.

We have always parked at that lot on the end of campus running up to Forest Park, and even though it's not free we have never once been noticed in the 4 Wash U tournaments I've driven to.

Yes. This was the format used at ACF Winter at MSU.

Sean confirms that Charlie is correct about parking. The lots at Brookings Drive and Forest Park Parkway are a viable free parking option on weekends.

It might be nice to have the set in advance for such a game-time decision, and as of yet no one from this site has contacted me.

So, great news... My teammate bailed on me today, and I again have no ride. Harding will have to drop out, unless I can somehow find a way to St. Louis - perhaps a miracle of some sort. Sorry.

Drat. I'm sorry you got abandoned. If you don't make it, have a good weekend regardless.

Miracle?

My friend is graciously giving me her car to take. I'll be at this.

I should be able to get a buzzer system.

Sorry for all the confusion.

Mizzou went 11-0, this one team went 8-4 to place second, Missouri State placed 3rd.

As above noted, Missouri went 11-0 in regularly scheduled rounds to clear the field by more than 2 games and win the overall and undergraduate championships. The Geckos won a full-game tiebreaker for second place after finishing tied with MSU at 7-3 through the double round robin, and finished 8-4 overall; they also claimed the Division II championship trophy.

Stats from the double round robin are available here.

This was a fun event for WKU's debut in collegiate quizbowl. Thanks to WUSTL for putting on a good event and congrats to Missouri and the Geckos for playing great today.
