CO Side Event: The Jean-Baptiste Lully Memorial

Post by abnormal abdomen »

I, Abid Haseeb, and Lloyd Sy of Rockford Auburn (IL), as well as Shantanu Jha of the University of Chicago are pleased to announce our housewritten fine arts doubles tournament as a side event on Chicago Open weekend this summer. I guess the thread for CO isn't actually up yet (at least from what I can see), but Donald Taylor said it would be a good idea to go ahead and announce this early.

The 13-round set itself will likely be written in its entirety by Lloyd, Shantanu, and me, with possible help from my older brother, Zahed, also a player on Rockford Auburn. We will be aiming for a difficulty of that of ACF Nationals. We had initially planned on this being easier than KLEE Fine Arts, but Shantanu has stated that it would be "unfortunate" to announce that, simply because as far as how much we've written thus far is concerned, it's really not easier than KLEE, and perhaps arguably harder. I should note that, in line with CO Lit, just because a work by creator X or creator X himself/herself has come up, one should not assume that creator X will not come up again. I should also note that there is a pretty good amount of easy/medium answer lines that can be gotten even by decent/good high school fine arts players; it just that those answer lines come with hard clues. Of course, there will be some pretty hard stuff tossed up. Expect lots of variability in answer lines and canon expansion here and there.

After discussing it with Shantanu, we'll be changing the distribution just a little bit from what it was in KLEE. We figured this would be a pretty good opportunity to expand the canon/represent stuff that is underrepresented in art film, for example, as well as other non-painting/classical music stuff. This is our announced distribution:

(25%) painting
(25%) classical music
(10%) opera/ballet
(9%) art film
(7.5%) sculpture
(7.5%) architecture
(6%) jazz
(10%) misc.

The cost will be a straight $10 per individual. We will allow solo teams in the event that it would make bracketing easier (e.g. going from 23 to 24 teams). At the same time, if demand should exceed 24 regular teams (or 48 people) in an inopportune manner in which we can't set up even brackets/pools, we will be willing to allow teams of 3 within reason/at our own discretion. If/when we do arrive at 24 teams, we'll have 3 brackets of 8 teams play a round-robin, then form another 4 brackets of 6 teams (top two of each prelim bracket make playoffs), with paper tiebreakers. If anyone has any alternative ideas in terms of bracketing and teams, we welcome suggestions, as we are not particularly experienced in the field of scheduling and bracketing.

Post here or email me at [email protected] (or Lloyd Sy at [email protected]) in order to sign up. If you would like to mirror this, you may also email us regarding that.

If you're looking for a partner, you should just post in this thread about it. If you can staff, please let me know or email me.

Oh, I forgot to mention- this tournament will have powers and negs. Tossups will range between 6 and 9 lines (after powers are marked), on size 10 TNR w/1 inch margins.

I honestly have no idea. Donald basically suggested that we write a fine arts tournament for CO this year, and we obliged. Don't multiple side events take place during CO weekend, anyway?

While I don't foresee any problem with you running this event, typically these kinds of things are coordinated with the tournament director and other people who also want to run side events. A lot of things about CO are still in the air, including date, editors, etc.

Who exactly is the TD for CO? Also, I was told that coordination and the like occurs, which is why I made a general statement of "this is happening during CO weekend". Sorry if this announcement was, uh, too spontaneous.

I'd love to play this. Let me know if you want to team up. I'm pretty good at most areas of music but somewhat weak on Baroque, and I know some art as well. Some opera knowledge; don't know a thing about ballet.

I guess I'm not most qualified to speak on these questions, mainly because my brother and teammate are running it (I'll also be involved), but I've seen some of the questions, and I can assure you they'll be pretty good. I'll help make sure the set meets all standards of quality.

I'm posting to say that I'll be working extensively on this set; I hope to make it a more tightly written and accessible version of KLEE. Since there seem to be worries about this being "Illinois high school arts" or whatever, let me assure everyone that both Abid and Lloyd are good writers and that this will be a good set.

Jerry. I don't know much about the organization of side events at CO, but I think it might be possible that exact times on them aren't set; as in, "Okay we're gonna play at the end of the day on Saturday" or something. Can someone tell me about how this all works?

Even if Michigan isn't going, you are highly underestimating the number of quiz bowlers who live in the Detroit area.

This is actually something I don't know a lot about. I want as many good fine arts players playing in this as possible, but I don't want to be short staffers in any way. Should I just simply state in the first post of this thread that, "Hey, I need staffers, post here if you want to staff"?

Basically, since I don't have a field cap as of now, I don't know how to balance staffers/players. I don't have a field cap because I really don't know how many people will be at CO, and the like.

I think Friday night events are bad unless there are a bunch of other events and it's just impossible to run it any other time. With only 2 side events this year, there's no reason I think for this to be run on Friday.

I mean, I hope you don't have any delusions that I know significant amounts of information regarding Fine Arts, because beyond a surface knowledge of visual art and an even shallower knowledge of music, I'm totally useless, but assuming you don't mind that, I'd be happy to be on your team.

I think Friday night events are bad unless there are a bunch of other events and it's just impossible to run it any other time. With only 2 side events this year, there's no reason I think for this to be run on Friday.
Yeah, I'd really prefer to just leave Friday and Monday for travel and keep everything to Saturday and Sunday. It makes travel much easier when people driving from, say, Minnesota don't have to leave super early to be able to fight through rush hour to get to a Friday event on time.

Well, as I'm leaving on Sunday night and people don't want Friday tournaments, my new preference would be to have this on Saturday night. Nothing against Ike's tournament, but we've already had like 3 or 4 literature tournaments this year while we haven't had a Fine Arts tournament since KLEE.

I mean, I hope you don't have any delusions that I know significant amounts of information regarding Fine Arts, because beyond a surface knowledge of visual art and an even shallower knowledge of music, I'm totally useless, but assuming you don't mind that, I'd be happy to be on your team.
It's fine. Sam hasn't gotten back to me yet and I don't think he wants to play both CO Trash and CO F.A. on the same day (If they even have them on the same day, does anyone know the schedule yet?). And Trust me you won't be totally useless.

Unless I misunderstood Seth in my communication with him, Friday night may not even be an option.
