Tournament by the Sea VIII- Singles/Doubles edition

Post by CSQuizJags »

Cedar Shoals HS will be hosting the seventh edition of Tournament by the Sea on Sunday, March 21, 2010. We will be using the packets from TrashTWOstophe and will be using a singles/doubles format as the rounds this year are TUs only. The entry fee for this event is $20 for singles and $30 for doubles teams. As we are hosting our HS event, Jag Bowl IV, the day before, if you work that event and play TBS, you can knock off $5 off the total cost for a single and $10 off for doubles (both workers have to work, if one works, it's only $5 off).

If you're interested, please fee free to email me at [email protected]

Field thus far:

7 teams

Chris Hendry and ?
Weinstein/Slade
Steve Bahanaman and ?
Rob Fernandez and ?
Anthony Bush
UTC (2 teams of 2)

I am so damn interested because I'm going to be driving from Rome, GA to Raleigh, NC on this day. Can you post a start time and an estimated end time?

If you don't want to post an end time, can you post an estimated number of rounds and rooms and a start time?

We are hoping to start between 9-930am. We will have (I believe) 12 or 13 rounds to play with. Factoring that, plus Mark Franklin's Time-Life Strife Music rounds prelims/finals, I seriously feel we could be done between 3-4pm. Of course, it all depends on who comes too, but that is our goal.

Are these going to be organized as multi-team matches or what?

Haven't though that far ahead. Depends on how many teams show up- my gut reaction says, to keep it simple, consider each single/double group as a "team" and play it like a standard match. If the numbers get big, we may modify that. Again, depends on how many come.

Robin,

In case Rob didn't mention, I will be up there to read for the TBS as well as the high school tournament the day before.

As this was my first time playing in an all Trash tournament, I must say I had a good time. Nice job to the writers of the TBS VIII, and thanks to Robin for hosting this year's event so close "by the sea". Hopefully, I can make it again next year. Thanks also to Nick for allowing me to represent the great Clemson University, where then "C" stands for "cholarship" and the "n" stands for "nowledge."

This tournament was exceptionally well-run by basically any standard. I hadn't played tossups-only with this few players before, and it really has an interesting, unique feel and flow that is enjoyable to play on. I'll save comments about the set for the Trashtwostrophe thread, but I had a great time playing solo and *almost* getting there against a really, really competitive and enjoyable field.

Thanks to all.

This is just a reminder. This set is still technically being played in the future, so as of now we shouldn't be talking about the questions outside of the Facebook group I've set up. Thanks!

Trashtwostrophe Discussion. I've got to approve entries but it shouldn't be a problem.

Is the first set at least available for release? If so, I'd appreciate it if you could e-mail it to me so I could put on Wastebin.

It looks like I'm going to have an upcoming mirror at Auburn High School in Rockford, IL. Also, UCLA is cannibalizing it for some sort of intramural half-and-half tournament. As soon as those are over, you'll get the set, Mike.

Don't worry about UCLA people reading them- I can pretty much guarantee that nobody that will be playing in this event will have heard of the set, much less know where to find it.

I really liked reading through the set, and was disappointed that my job was to shorten all the questions for use in the dorm college bowl event. This job was definitely made easier by the fact that pretty much every question was very pyramidal, and very clue dense, allowing me to keep at least 4 clues in each 2-4 line edit. I can't think back to any clues that had me thinking "Why would that help anyone?" or "What's the point of that clue?", which is incredible for this many questions to be so well put together.

Also, can you invite me to this facebook group please? I started writing down some comments while going through the set, but stopped after round three because of ORL's deadline to get the questions into their system.
