Announcement: Paul Goodman Memorial Open

Post by marnold »

This is the announcement for the Paul Goodman Memorial Open Trash Tournament. This will be this year's version of the Chicago Open Trash tournament, almost certainly taking place the Sunday after Chicago Open at the University of Chicago.

As announced previously, I have the pleasure of editing the tournament this year. I've been part of the writing team the last two years and am eager to continue the fine tradition of CO trash tournaments. Working with Andrew the past two years means I've pretty much adopted his trash editing philosophy. I find meta asides and the rare meta clue amusing, I like occasional academic content, and I think that properly done common link questions are a great way to bring in random and more esoteric parts of the trash universe without sacrificing conversion, so expect all of those. Like last year, I'm shooting for 10 rounds and a finals packet. Like last year, the fee will be $25 per person. Unlike last year, however, I will be offering one discount: a $10 discount (for the team, not per person) if all members of a four-person team play or staff Chicago Open proper.

[edited: collaborators no longer sought]

To register for this tournament as a team or as a free agent, or to volunteer to staff, email me at goodman.trash at gmail.com.

As Michael has said I will be playing this. I'm currently looking for teammates. My knowledge of Michael Arnold will pretty much guarantee me like 100 points a game so better snatch me up quick.

I want to try and get there, but I have to see how research is this summer and how flexible my schedule is. I'm probably 75% sure I can make it.

I'd likely be looking to be part of a team, but may have one teammate with me. My strength is sports questions, my glaring weaknesses are music, comic books and non-Nintendo video games.

If I'm not needed to staff, I would like to play this. I suck at trash, but I would have done tolerably well on last year's CO trash set (i.e. 10-20 PPG), so I'm not entirely useless.

Susan Ferrari will be helping me with this set so I've edited out the call for collaborators (if we're not on track in June I may open it again, but I anticipate being okay). However, I still wouldn't mind someone who won't be playing writing a handful of video game questions. If I have to do it myself, it will be basically just Mario Paint, Nobunaga's Ambition and Madden '03 coming up over and over.

Anyone want to play this with me? Expect deep knowledge of indie music and more modernish sports (esp. hockey, football, and basketball) and decent knowledge of movies. I know literally nothing about TV and the internet.

Assuming I can make it out to Chicago, I would like to play this and am a free agent. My trash knowledge is spotty, but occasionally deep. Expect points in old music, (occasionally) newer music, football, curling*, obscure board games, and the Internet. And pretty much no points anywhere else, unless this distribution features a stealth 1/1 current events or something.

* shorthand for wacky niche sports that aren't really sports

I'll be playing, as usual aiming for a respectable finish, steady 30 ppg regardless of my teammates when I don't have mike cheyne bogarting my areas by being all better than me and such. Points will come from anywhere, except recent music, comics, recent non-baseball sports. May also have Ted Stratton, noted super good at trash player pending his playing.

Carsten has the worst taste in stuff. Expect tons of good buzzes on tossups about nurses, pop music my 15 year old sister wouldn't listen to, and movies that no one should ever watch.

With that said, how amenable to forming some sort of Carleton alliance would you be? I want to show Frank my skillz.

I'll hopefully be playing this, and depending on if I can convince the people I played with last year to play, then that will determine whether I become a free agent or not. Also, I am presuming this tournament will be sometime in July as the CO academic tourney lists that packets be done by the beginning of July, just wondering.

I'm about 90% sure I'll be able to play this and would like to find a team.

I am not necessarily good at trash by any means and do not intend on being competitive, but I would like to meet some new people and have a fun time. On that note things I am:

-Know some random TV
-Probably decent at obscure sports
-Decent at Video Games
-Okay at Internet things

Free agent for now. Notably not good at trash, except for movies and TV. Oh, I can also most likely first-line most any Broadway tossup and convert common link on the Broadway clues. I'm friends with David Garb, and I know Greg Peterson. But I'm not really picky about what team I'm on.

I might try to unite three of the insanely good high scorers from Trashtastrophe.
