Michigan Academic Competitions, in collaboration with Detroit Catholic Central's Academic Team, would like to announce that the Michigan mirrors of VCU Open and VCU Sunday will take place on August 7-8. Both tournaments will NOT take place at U of M in Ann Arbor, but rather at Detroit Catholic Central High School in Novi, MI, located ~30 miles from Ann Arbor. I will be serving as the TD.

Entry fees and discounts TBD.

If you would like to register for this site, please email [email protected]

There is a reasonable chance I will be at this tournament. I would need teammates.

DUDE, this is in Novi! Awesome!

Now to convince myself that it's okay to take more days off work...

Of course.... of course it is.

Expressing interest. Teammates needed. I've never played a VCU Open, so I don't really have an idea of what I have to offer to potential teammates.

Ryan Westbrook and I should have a team for this.

I am interested, in part because I could take the double-secret (and highly relaxing) back way to get from Lansing at least to Howell.

I will try to round up a few fellow travelers to form a team for at least one, if not both, of the competition dates.

Fantastic, this tournament just got a few minutes closer to me and there won't be any having to drive around and find parking in goddamn Ann Arbor. Looks like I'll be going to and playing horribly at this tournament.

Park on side streets just north of campus (Ann, Catherine, Lawrence, Ingalls, Thayer, etc.). You can usually find spots there.

I see you have us in the field for one or two already. That's probably going to happen, just let me know when you can about discounts for reading/scoring or whatever on saturday. We'll take whatever we can get.

Provided I can find enough DCC guys willing to make a team I'll be there Sunday and I'll read/scorekeep on Saturday for sure.

I am currently trying to find a way to play this with some manner of misfits be it college players or high school players from my team this year. So..I suppose I have "expressed interest."

I am a free agent for this. I am not that good, but I can bribe you with lodging (my parents house, though it will probably be a couch), and picking you up from the airport.

Edit: I need someone to vouch for you that you are not an axe murderer (it is my parents house after all). If you are an axe murderer, do not bother asking, my (not so) little brother is a mediocre high school quiz bowl player turned college rugby player.

I also applaud U of M on holding the tournament at DCC, as it is 20 minutes from my house, as opposed to the 21 minutes Mason Hall is (although I swear I made it in 12 minutes that one time).

The plan as of now is for a group of Ohio high school players to come up for the Sunday portion. So, I guess we (me speaking for them) are expressing interest. I would say the odds are near 100% that at least some group of them will be coming.

Pat Freeburn has confirmed he would like to play with me on Saturday, if we can both be there. We are looking for teammates (I think). Also, I would probably play on Sunday and would need teammates too, hopefully funny, oddball ones.

I'm "expressing interest" as a free agent. I should know more about whether I can definitively show up in early July.

I'm 90% sure I'm going to do my best to make this (at least on Saturday, possibly on Sunday), so I'll change my status to free agency. Are there any updates on fee structure/discounts and/or the field?

Hi all,

Here's a field update:

VCU Open (Saturday, August 7)

Confirmed / High Probability of Attending
DCC House Team (1)
Pat Freeburn and Mike Cheyne
Nolan Esser (Free Agent)

Showing Interest

VCU Sunday (Sunday, August 8)

Confirmed / High Probability of Attending
DCC House Team (1-3)
HS Ohio Team (1-2)

Showing Interest
Nolan Esser (Free Agent)

Not Sure Which Day(s) They Are Playing

Confirmed / High Probability of Attending
Ohio State (1-2)
Michael Knapp (and friends?)
Nallin Lalwani (Free Agent)

Showing Interest
Minnesota (1-2?)
Ryan Westbrook and Matt Lafer
Jonathan Graham (Free Agent)

Side notes:
Jarret Greene and Jonathan Graham -- You guys should probably contact the Ohio State / HS Ohio people to get a ride up with them.
Team Pat Freeburn and Mike Cheyne is looking for free agents.

As you can see, there is a lot of missing information. Please update your statuses (especially what days you can play) and email us at [email protected] to confirm your attendence (so far, only two teams have emailed us).

You can put my team down as definite for VCU Open. For Sunday I'm not sure...I'd like to see some more college teams show up, obviously we don't want to play against a field of all HS teams.

I think that DCDS might be interested in sending a team, Although I have not discussed this much with our coaches yet.

Lafer and I will be playing with Freeburn and Cheyne on Saturday. Don't know about Sunday. Also, yes, some college teams and players in the mix would be nice.

I might be interested in this if I can get a ride and lodging with people, so you can put me down tenuously.

I may be interested in moderating, if needed. Of course, I am not completely sure whether I can come to this tournament.

Hey:

One of my relatives works for the hotel industry, so I can get a discount on a hotel room for Friday and Saturday nights (like $50-$60 TOTAL for both nights, so that's really cheap with multiple folks). If 1-3 people whose schedule matches this would like to share a room, please let me know.

There is a Holiday Inn Express and a Comfort Suites roughly a mile away in Wixom.

A field update will posted sometime this weekend.
