what do all the acronyms mean

Post by EShipp » Sun Apr 15, 2012 5:50 pm

I have been doing quiz bowl for three years and still don't understand the difference between NAQT, PACE, and any other acronymic formats. I've done NAQT but I don't even know whether I've done PACE because I don't understand what it is. Can someone please help me?

For future reference for all teams that may play us it is pronounced Davis not Dayveez. Thanks.

NAQT = National Academic Quiz Tournaments
http://www.naqt.com/

It runs HSNCT or the High School National Championship Tournament. Its format uses (generally, but not always) a time limit (2x9 minute halves for high school) and its distribution has more geography and popular culture.

PACE = Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence
http://www.pace-nsc.org/

It runs NSC or National Scholastics Championship, its flagship and only tournament. It also has 20 point powers, bounceback bonuses, and a more academic distribution. It also sponsors a bunch of stuff like awards for contributing to quizbowl and the Quizbowl Database (http://quizbowldb.com/).

HSAPQ = High School Academic Pyramid Questions
http://www.hsapq.com/

It runs NASAT or National All-Star Academic Tournament, which is for state/province teams. It also provides numerous packets that are in the 20/20 format and have an academic distribution.
http://www.hsapq.com/nasat2012

ACF = Academic Competition Federation
http://acf-quizbowl.com/

It only does collegiate tournaments (e.g. Fall, Regionals, Nationals), but those mACF events mimic ACF rules/distribution.

EDIT: I don't know jack about any local American formats.

A brief rundown of some acronyms (similar to what Patrick just posted):

NAQT stands for "National Academic Quiz Tournaments". NAQT is probably the largest high school quiz bowl format, and every year hosts the HSNCT (High School National Championship Tournament) for qualified teams. HSNCT is by far the largest of the major high school quizbowl national championship tournaments.NAQT also hosts the ICT (Intercollegiate Championship Tournament), a national tournament for colleges.

PACE stands for "Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence," a non-profit group that hosts the NSC, or National Scholastic Championship, every year. The NSC is the second-largest major high school quiz bowl national championship tournament. PACE is similar in style but slightly different in format from NAQT, as it has powers worth 20 points rather than 15 and does not assign a point penalty to negs (whereas NAQT has a -5 point penalty for negs) and PACE has bouncebacks on bonuses. PACE publishes its questions from past NSCs online.

ACF stands for "Academic Competition Federation," a collegiate quiz bowl format that publishes its questions online. Many high school teams attend ACF events, especially ACF Fall, a novice-level tournament. ACF differs from NAQT and PACE in that it does not have powers.

HSAPQ stands for "High School Academic Pyramidal Questions," a question-writing company that provides questions for many high school tournaments. HSAPQ differs very little from NAQT in format, and its regular-season questions are of similar difficulty to NAQT's regular season Invitational Series (IS) tournaments that are very common at regular-season tournaments. At the end of the year, HSAPQ hosts the NASAT (National All-Star Academic Tournament), which is for teams of quizbowl all-stars selected by local state quizbowl authorities.

Various states also use acronyms to refer to their state quizbowl leagues, such as Virginia (VHSL), Illinois (IHSSBCA), Texas (TQBA), and Missouri (MOQBA), among others.

EDIT: Some minor copyediting and adding more info about PACE

Also, if you just want to know the differences between the formats, here is...

an NAQT packet: http://naqt.com/samples/t1973packet_01.pdf

an HSAPQ packet (which is mACF): http://www.hsapq.com/questions/16/15.pdf

a pace-nsc packet: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/archive/ ... fs%205.doc

and an ACF packet (from ACF Fall, the easiest ACF tournament): http://collegiate.quizbowlpackets.com/a ... hipola.doc

Ella, on an unrelated note, I just have to mention how your signature made me laugh. I'm pretty sure we (Oldham) played you at a tournament earlier this year, and I think I remember that exact talk when someone pronounced it wrong.
