2018-19 Groger Ranks Awards [WINNERS ANNOUNCED]

by Berniecrat
Hello, everyone.

As you may know for the last year, Groger Ranks has been working on rankings of teams in particular. However, there is no objective way to rank individuals statistically. As such, we are pleased to announce the 2018-19 Player Poll, which was run last year by Groger Ranks member Anson Berns, will be run by Groger Ranks.

Players are eligible for this poll if they have played at least two all-subject pyramidal quiz bowl tournaments with matches being played between two teams, and if those tournaments have statistics posted either on the NAQT website, neg5, or SQBS. This poll will consist of multiple smaller polls and people can choose which poll to vote for. Voting twice for the same section, however, will invalidate your entire ballot.

The sections of the poll are to honor the best overall players, the best history players, the best literature players, the best science players, the best fine arts players, the best religion/mythology/philosophy/social science players, the best geography/current events/other academic players, the best freshman players, and the best sophomore players.

Justification, as always, is a good rule of thumb.

The poll can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sf_link

The top 4 other players will be considered the National Groger Ranks A Team and receive plaques, as will the top players for each of the subject polls and the grade-level polls. The Player of the Year (who receives the most votes) will be given special recognition.

We are also proud to announce that after placing first in the Post-Nationals Overall Rankings, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Tech in Virginia has been named the Groger Ranks Team of the Year! They too will receive a special plaque to commemorate their achievements.

Thank you for your support of the rankings and happy voting!

Some notes. Traditionally, Player Polls (like the college one and the hs Player Poll run last year) have people making "for your consideration" posts. We would encourage healthy discussion about it here (as long as it doesn't devolve into destructive criticism of others like the National Quiz Bowl Awards last year both on forums and on Discord).

Secondly, we recognize that the subject polls are almost impossible to select for given the lack of advanced statistics at the high school level. I would encourage people to try their best, but if they truly don't know enough to skip the subject polls while voting. It is better to not vote at all than to make a ballot knowing you may not be able to accurately rate.

The poll will close on June 30, so that NASAT performances can, but do not necessarily need to, be taken into account.

Finally, tournaments people played outside of their normal school team (such as on chimera teams for online tournaments) are still valid for the two tournaments rule, as long as the tournaments they played were all-subject and pyramidal.

I'm going to use this thread to plug some of my teammates, who I think may be even better than most people realize.

Our captain Anson Berns is an amazing literature, fine arts, philosophy, and overall player. Most prominent among these is of course his dominant scoring performance at the 2019 PACE NSC and leading Blair to a fourth place finish. He has been the cornerstone of a Blair team that has been statistically dominant all year. He also completely destroyed this year's WHAQ, scoring over 100 ppg and leading a Blair team that was nowhere close to full strength to the highest PPB on WHAQ anyone has achieved this year, and subsequently was the highest Groger score Blair held for a while. Other noteworthy results include his excellent play on other hard sets, such as his 14 powers on Terrapin, and his lead scoring performances on SCT DII (where Blair beat both Hunter and High Tech and put up the highest ppb of any HS team on the set) and ILLIAC (another instance of Blair achieving >27 appb). As for specialties, although Anson is mostly known for his skill in literature, he is also elite at visual fine arts and philosophy, and is possibly top 5 in both of those categories as well. He is able to keep up his scoring numbers even while playing with Katherine Lei and Sophia Weng, both of whom are great literature players in their own right, and art too in the case of Sophia. Please vote for him, both in the overall and in the category polls!

Speaking of Katherine, she is an elite science player and has been a large reason for Blair A's amazing stats. As a specialist who is often second scorer by a large margin over the third and fourth players, her power numbers and power percentage are absolutely insane, as can be seen at any tournament including difficulties up to SCT, ILLIAC, HSNCT and PACE. Her neg control is also amazing, especially for someone buzzing as early and as often as she is. She is definitely deserving of at least a top 3 spot in the science poll, so please vote for her!

I would like to shill my sophomore teammate Chris Tong, who may not be as known throughout the HSQB community as the two players I mentioned previously, but is very good in his own right. He led all sophomores in powers at PACE, and led Montgomery Blair B in scoring to an unexpectedly high finish, including wins over Wilmington Charter and IMSA and 20 points away from beating Auburn, a top 8 team. A majority of his powers came on science, and he is arguably a top 10 science player as well (he powered over Geoffrey Chen!). Please vote for him in both the sophomore poll and the science category poll!

In the spirit of this discussion, I would like to vouch for some of my teammates as well:

Daniel Yang should definitely merit a lot of consideration to be in your top 10 science poll. He has put up great stats all throughout the season and has competed very well against the likes of Katherine Lei and others. His stats at Blue Jay Bowl, CAST, PACE, HSNCT, and ILLIAC show his ability to scale up. Also, Daniel doea cover other categories such as myth, religion, philo, and music really well. This generalism could be enough to even merit top 20 overall consideration for him!

Our literature player and captain, Olivia Chen should be in your top 5 literature ballot poll. She has put up phenomenal stats at Blue Jay Bowl, CAST, HSNCT, and PACE. Also she has regularly split and even done better than top tier literature players including James Kuang, Anson Berns, and Olivia Lamberti (at PACE). I would definitely put her in the top 3-5 of your lit poll.

I would also like to shout out my teammates Justin Posner and Derek Chu. Derek is a fantastic history and myth player, who should merit some consideration for your history poll. Justin Posner is a phenomenal humanities player who should merit consideration in not only your history poll, but your RMP/SS poll as well. His stats at JHU Fall, CAST, ILLIAC, and PACE prove how he can scale up at higher difficulties. Justin can scale up very well in history too and might’ve been even shadow affected by being on the same team as me or Derek at tournaments. He should definitely be in your sophomore poll, as well as merit consideration for your history and RMP/SS polls.

As for myself, I put up really good stats on NAQT this year such as Blue Jay Bowl and HSNCT. I believe I should merit some consideration for the history poll and some consideration for the Geo/CE/Other poll too.

Now, for some other players:

Vote Chris Tong for top 10 sci and sophomore player, manz obliterated PACE.

Dan Ni from Langley is very, very good at science.

All the TJ boys should be ranked highly in their respective categories, but Kevin Wang is very very good at CE/Other Academic. He should merit a lot of consideration for that poll.

Katherine Lei is really OP, she’s top 3 science without a doubt.

Govind Prabhakar should be top 3 in your history poll. He’s so scary at history and is a lock-down player. He is also very, very good at geo and current events, so he should merit consideration for that!

That’s it for now.

I'll stan for my brother (James Kuang) and point out this absurd statline of 21/7/5, and perhaps more impressively, getting this statline at a college tournament (one that was 6 months ago, no less). I'll let his performance in the finals at NSC speak for itself on how good he is at lit (Cervantes aside).

The rest of the TJ players are all really good as well, of course, I'm just not required by blood oath to dig up stats for them. Don't let the shadow effect disguise how good they all are as both generalists and specialists.

akshay govindan of ladue a is easily the second best science player in the country. he’s able to get insane buzzes on any science in any difficulty and has great neg control. (he’s also a really nice guy!)

Having played with Steven Liu and Darren Petrosino for a good three years, I can confidently say that they should be strongly considered for science and literature, respectively.

Steven was the lead scorer in all three of our nationals runs, including our 3rd place Open Division SSNCT team, our T-12 HSNCT team, and our 5th place PACE team. Steven is definitely top 5 in math, astro, CS, and physics, and his knowledge in history, geography, and current events should have you considering him when making your top 20 ballot, as well.

In addition, Darren has been an integral part in all of these finishes: throughout the regular season, I've witnessed him power over many elite lit players. In particular, he powered 7/8 of lit tossups in rounds 13 and 14 of PACE.

Don't forget Cole for your history ballots, either; despite the extremely tough competition in history this year, Cole should be noted for his extremely deep knowledge of military history. Cole put up a statline of 38/13/7 at SSNCT, with almost all of his buzzes in history and geography, despite being shadowed by Steven. He also went 22/3/2 on CAST at the Blair Invitational, powering three tossups in finals to seal the victory.

With the inundation of DC metro area players who should be in this poll, I'd like to vouch for some non-DC Metro Area players.

Karan Gurazada is very strong in both history and science (his ILLIAC and Penn Bowl stats show he can scale up probably the best of any HS science player). He should be in your consideration for both science and sophomore overall.

Andrew Hoagland's very good at history and is a strong generalist, and has been underranked for a very long time.

I know things, mostly history and literature, and am probably one of the better generalists in 10th grade.

Arjun is very strong at FA and US History, and is very much shadowed over by Govind, but is a strong player in his own right.

Steven Liu led Hitek to 12th at HSNCT and 5th at NSC, and his deep science and history knowledge definitely deserves him a spot on the overall poll, if not one of the subject polls.

Daniel Ma also led his team to 12th place at HSNCT, and got a pretty high amount of powers at NSC. In addition, he is one of the strongest history and geography players out there.

Pedro Juan Orduz is heavily overshadowed, considering he won US History Bee and brought Hunter a W at NHBB JV, as well as his skill at both regular tournaments and at PACE/HSNCT, where he was a bomb CE and history player

Our captain Anson Berns has already been mentioned, but he definitely deserves a spot in your overall, literature, and fine arts ballots. He did very well on WHAQ, SCT DII, Terrapin, and of course HSNCT and PACE. In addition to being a very good player, he is also a great captain. I’ve played under him for two years and can always depend on his game sense. Anson is reliable and funny and smart. Please consider ranking him in your top 5.

I'm probably not voting in this poll, but Wesley Zhang has ridiculous geography knowledge -- he got 4-5 tossups a round at Geo Monstrosity / GHOTI, several of them not late in the question.

From my own team:

Ethan Ashbrook is an elite literature player. He put up the best stats of any literature specialist at HSNCT and similar stats to James Kuang at PACE. Additionally, Ethan should be considered for your top 20 individuals, as he led Uni in scoring at PACE and his generalism is shadowed by having strong teammates. He's also excellent at mythology and philosophy, so consider him for RMPSS ballot too. Jonathan Lau is crazy at geography/CE. He should also be on your sophomore ballot, given that he led our 2nd-place HSNCT team in scoring. Tim Cho is a phenomenal history player. He outpowered many excellent history players at PACE while buzzing almost purely in history. He also placed 7th at History Bee. I am a strong fine arts player, and I think that I should be on your fine arts poll, as I have done quite well against other elite FA players (Ethan Strombeck, Michael Li, Kevin Wang) on the nationals stage.

From the rest of Illinois:

-Literature: Olivia Lamberti is certainly top 10 in literature; it's hard to dispute her strong specialism. Ethan Strombeck is also potentially top 10.
-History: Govind Prabhakar and Ethan Strombeck are both top 10 history players as shown by their strong placing at History Bee.
-Science: Hanson Hao is an elite science player, which is shadowed a bit by his strong generalism. He is easily top 5, at least in my mind.
-Fine Arts: Pretty sure I don't need to say this, but Ethan Strombeck is the best at FA.
-RMPSS: Daniel Lee from IMSA is quite good at thought. He also put up a lot of powers at PACE.
-Overall: Ethan Strombeck, Hanson Hao, and Govind Prabhakar are all top 20 indiviudals.

As for my writeup, here are some thoughts presented with no real pretense of organization.

I think that Avinash Iyer should have a lock on your top sophomore pick. He has molded himself into the best sophomore generalist in the country, while also remaining a phenomenal history player.

Karan Gurazada and Christopher Tong are two incredible science players. Both of them deserve to be in your top sophomores poll.

Shardul Rao put up some great stats at HSNCT, and carried his team pretty hard.

I'll shill for myself as one of the best sophomore history/CE specialists, while dealing with a big shadow effect from Daniel (whom you should all vote for in your top overall/history/geo players! He's also underrated as a secondary science player).

Arjun Nageswaran gets shadowed pretty hard by Govind; Govind's one of the top 5 history players in the country, so having to deal with that, while still putting up consistently good statlines, is impressive.

Justin Ward put up good statlines at both HSNCT and PACE, and having played him a lot at NHBB, he is a very good history player.

Nick Zhang is a top sophomore geo player, and a good generalist overall.

The people whom you think are good are good. Daniel Ma is a top 20 overall player; he should be in your polls for top history players and geography/CE/other academic, and he's arguably the best HS geography player in the country, not counting Karan Menon (who doesn't really play quiz bowl, and is ineligible). James Stevenson from GPS is probably a top 10 RMPSS player.

I am here to shill some people mostly from the northeast (specifically, the NY Metro area)

- Alex Pyle is scary.
- Daniel Ma is incredibly talented, and should be showing up on your top 20, history, science, and fine arts ballots.
- Pedro and Cerulean are also excellent players who are heavily shadowed by DMA. They deserve consideration for your sophomore and history ballots.
- The Ithaca guys are very very good in their respective categories (unfortunately I don't know who does what) and should be considered for subject ballots.
- Steven, Deepak, Cole, Michael, and Darren from High Tech should all be considered for subject ballots (Steven in science/ce, Deepak and Cole in geo/hist, Michael in FA, Darren in lit). In addition, you should write Steven's name in on your overall ballot on account of his massive brain (leading High Tech to 5th at NSC and t-12 at HSNCT.
- Sohum and Waley of Wilmington Charter are excellent.
- Karsten didn't go to either nationals, but don't forget he exists. Vote him in your freshman and lit ballots.
- Cooper did a great job of leading a new team to a 2nd place finish in NHBB and has been good at regular-season tournaments. Consider him for your freshman ballot.
- Nick Zhang is good at geo and quizbowl and gorilla content.
- Avinash Iyer is far and away the best sophomore in the country and a top 10 history player
- You should consider Benjamin Hu of Millburn for your science player and freshman ballots. He put up a 22/18/8 (there was a stats error) line at HSNCT while being shadowed on history.

He didn't qualify for the polls, but Jackson Thiel (Roscommon) is quite dominant (as a freshman). Finished individually no. 2, and helped Roscommon finish third at the TC Central invitational, in addition to helping Roscommon finish third at the state championship, and top 8 at quiz central.

- As others have said, Avinash is probably the best sophomore player in the country who is extremely dominant on history and still a very good generalist on other subjects.
- Karan Gurazada is not only a top 10 science player, but he also should be in the running for top 20 overall players. He puts up amazing stats and powers on non-science stuff also while on a stacked Stanford Online team (as the leading scorer!)
- Shiva is elite at history and a very good freshman in general.

Some notes on Texas players
-William Golden should definitely be on your overall poll. He has consistently been one of the top scorers at every tournament he's been to with a pretty high power percentage. He also scales up very well, with over 110 ppg on Terrapin packets at the Texas Invitational. He's also very good on bonuses, as shown by the fact that Taylor had the second highest PPB at both HSNCT and PACE. He probably belongs on all the subject polls except fine arts and science as well.
-Raul Passement is an elite science player as shown by his performance at IPNCT.
-Chinmay Murthy has insanely deep history knowledge, as shown by his 42 powers at HSNCT and 36 at PACE on a fairly balanced and strong LASA team.
EDIT: Daniel Lee is also really good at science, he can put up great first lines on any difficulty.
Outside of Texas
-I've played against both Eshaan Vakil and John John Groger. Both are extremely strong overall players.
-Karsten Rynearson has to be the best freshman in the country based on his SSNCT performance. He powered 10 questions in 1 game against High Tech A. He also had 30 powers at HFT, so he can scale up better than a freshman should be able to.

Posting from China, grammar will be bad。 Some thoughts:
Avinash Iyer is an amazing history player and generalist: rank him in history and sophomore.
Steven is a top sci player/generalist, Michael is the best music player in the US, Darren is a top lit player, Cole is amazing at history, and DON'T forget Deepak, whose geography knowledge is SCARY.
Dean is incredible at history, and is definitely one of the top juniors nationally.
A few notes on me: I didn't get to go to HSNCT or NSC due to school and personal reasons, but at SSNCT, we did beat the fifth place NSC team twice and I led us to t5. I also played FST on "Where'd Shiva and Cooper Go" as "War" alongside Daniel Ma (DMA), and Robert Muniz (Famine), and I was the top scorer on my team, the second overall, and the only person that beat me in powers was Fred Zhang. I would hope that my regs season and SSNCT/FST stats would be enough to put me in your freshman ballot, and I also hope you rank me in literature.
Pedro's NHBB performance speaks for itself, and he should be t5 among your sophomores..
DMA had a dominating regs-season and a great nats season, and he should be in your senior and history ballot.
Karan is amazing at science, music, and is t3 among sophomores.
Some horseman commentary: Shiva won NHBB, Cooper killed it in NHBB bowl, and Robert got t5 at IPNCT, so I would say that the four of us in some order should be your top 4 freshmen, and they should all be ranked in history..
Ned Tagtmeier is a VERY good lit player and led his team to fourth at SSNCT. Rank him among sophomores, he's GOOD.

As a mostly geo/CE and history player, I'll make some shoutouts the top players in these categories I've played (I have no idea how to rank people in "other academic").

Jonathan Lau, Chinmay Murthy, and Karan Menon I would say are the best geo players I've played against on geo sets. Were Karan eligible, I would say he would be the very clear consensus number 1 pick for top geo player, considering that beat every current player in IGB two years in a row, both times in dominating fashion (Although the final was closer, Karan maxed out in the first dozen questions in my semifinal room this year).

CE is variable on the whole, and it's hard to tell from playing who's good. I'll just shout out my teammates Pedro Juan Orduz and Benjamin Chapman, who are both elite CE players.

Regarding history, the entirety of the National History Bee Varsity Final are top 10 history players in my view, and in addition to them, some of the most impressive overall history players I've seen are Tim Cho, Govind Prabakhar, and Ethan Strombeck (no Illinois bias, I promise).

My teammates Pedro Juan Orduz and Cerulean Ozarow are both excellent history players, having just led their teams to the JV title, and often getting a large shadow from playing with me and each other. While they may not be top 10 overall just yet in history, their history strength certainly puts them both within consideration for the top sophomores.

Random other shoutouts: Dean Ah Now is by far the best individual player I have played against in the NYC metro area, regardless of what he may say about himself. And after playing against and with Karsten Rynearson at HFT and FST respectively, he is one of the best players in general I've seen, not just among freshmen, and should be the unanimous top freshman.

I guess I can also post my nats results for ease of reference, following Karsten's lead:
11th at History Bowl (swept the placement bracket after getting knocked out by Govind and Stevenson)
Quarterfinalist in USH Bee (3rd seed after prelims)
2nd in IGB (although only 10th seed and 3rd place in my semifinal room)
3rd in History Bee
12th at HSNCT; wins over two top 5 teams in Chattahoochee and TJ in prelims; 42 powers in 356 tossups with triple history/geo coverage
23rd at PACE (Hunter was bad at PACE, as I predicted); 45 powers in 18 games while Pedro impressively went 21/20 (Again, vote him in your best sophomore ballots)

Regarding FST, I had the highest science power rate, and I probably would have been overall top scorer on my team/2nd overall had the crossover game stats been uploaded (I went 6/1/0 that game).

(All edits were made to fix the note about FST, since I now have more info)

With roughly a week left to vote in this poll, I've decided to put up a shill post.

John John is an extremely good player. He has put up incredible stats throughout the season. At NHBB he led our team to 6th place, beating out many top specialists. He was also the fifth highest scorer at HSNCT after the prelims, and lead our team to 14th at PACE. He should be considered for your geo, fa, and history ballots, and should definitely be in your overall ballots.

I'll also shill for myself. With John John on my team, I get shadowed really hard, but we still managed to break Hoppes-Mikanowski on multiple occasions. I was also a top 10 scorer at NASAT, one of my few times playing without John John.

After playing with William Groger, I can confirm that he is more than able to consistently lead a team on both bonuses and tossups against high level competition on difficult questions. The shadow effect on Miami Valley is huge and it shouldn’t distract from William’s position as one of the top sophomores in the nation. He’s also VERY good on myth and a great lit player.

Moving onto myself, I got a science question at NASAT and I think that’s pretty cool if I’m being honest.

Danny Turillo is also someone to consider for history and generalist, he was right behind William on many buzzes and had very deep knowledge in history.

Besides the more obvious candidates from Ohio (Hari, John John, William), here are some observations of other Ohio players (stemming from my teammate's earlier post):

Danny Turillo (Boardman): A solid generalist who kept Boardman alive and among the top Ohio teams after Pranav’s departure. He's especially deep in History, Danny can go wild on others teams (see us vs them at Comet Clash, or them vs Copley at Ohio State). 29th at IPNCT, as well as bringing Boardman a 5-5 record at HSNCT and qualifying for NHBB, don’t overlook his skills.

Timmy Huang, Neel Mehta, Sam Oguntoyinbo, and Pranit Behara (Solon): A balanced but formidable team, these guys took 19th/41st and HSNCT/PACE, while having a spectacular overall season. Each of them should receive a nod if subject ballots (Timmy for Lit/History, Sam and Neel for Science and Lit, Pranit for FA). looking at the season's stats, they've put up some amazing numbers while playing heavy competition (CAST, BHSAT, among others) Also Sam and Neel represented Ohio A at NASAT, so consider that for what it's worth.

Joey Esposito (Aurora): I’m gonna shill my own teammate for a minute, but hear me out. Despite playing during a busy school year, Joey managed to stay among the top individuals in the state, placing as low as 4th in every tournament he played this season, with the exception of HSNCT. He is a solid generalist with deep literature knowledge and good FA and history, he was 2nd in powers at NAQT Ohio State while leading his team to 4th (despite some poor losses on our behalf). Despite difficulty at HSNCT (where we went 5-5), he is ready to step it up for NASAT with Ohio B. Among all seniors, he seems to have had the largest improvement over a small period of time (see Comet Clash 2017 vs Comet Clash 2019 or Ohio State 2019).

Samantha Street (Northmont): As a young player, Samantha has been on fire as Northmont's captain, leading her team to 4th at NAQT States, wins and high finishes throughout the season, playoffs at HSNCT (going 7-5 for 73rd while also being a Sophomore Rising Star), and 49th at PACE while playing with good support. She's especially good at lit, so consider her for both the subject and sophomore ballots!

Henry Greentree and William Rauschenberg (Bexley): Though Bexley only played a few tournaments with recorded stats, it’s easy to see these two and their impressive skills. With Henry going 13th at IPNCT (finishing 7th in FA, along with other top 20 subject finishes) and William 29th (2nd in CE, 9th in History, among other good stats) , these two should not be overlooked despite only a minor amount of data and poor luck at NAQT Ohio States (getting into the 2nd bracket despite tying Copley for a 5-1-1 record due to losing a tiebreaker)

James Stevenson from GPS isn't mentioned on the Groger Ranks post at all, but I'd like to congratulate him for being the well-deserved unanimous first place among the RMPSS ballots.

We addressed this in the website link, but due to a lack of responses we did not do awards for geo/ce/other and RMPSS. Geo/CE/Other received 4 ballots while RMPSS received 3 ballots which was not enough to be used, particularly if we were going to drop top ballots in order to avoid outliers. It is definitely our fault for making such a broad part of the distribution that very few people study together (if anything people will study religion & mythology together and philosophy & social science together) a singular category poll. Next year we will look towards splitting into an RM and PSS portion or just scrapping the subcategories entirely.
