Barrington Invitational Tournament (3.16.19)

Post by the return of AHAN »

Please find attached the details for the 16th annual Barrington Invitational Scholastic Bowl Tournament. This will be a great tune-up event for IESA State Series, NAQT's Middle School National Championships (Rosemont,IL in May), or both! As in the last several years, we will utilize rules and format that approximate most Illinois high school events (max of 5 players can play, bonuses answered one part at a time). The "Challenge" Division will use the Pennsylvania State Academic Coaches Association's "Groundhog Day" set, while the standard and "B" divisions will use the SCOP 9(Middle School) set. We hope you can make it to Barrington on March 16th!

PSACA's set from last year can be found here;

SCOP 8, used in our standard and "B" divisions, can be found here;

Call for staff:
On March 16th, 2019, Station Middle School will host the 16th iteration of the Barrington Invitational Tournament. This tourney will use modified ACF rules (powers, no negs, bouncebacks on bonuses), and the question set will be the SCOP MS set at the standard and "B" levels, and PSACA's Groundhog Day at the Challenge level. As in the past, I can offer a $80 stipend for adult moderators, and sign off on any volunteer hours that high school staffers might require. Moderators should expect to arrive no later than 8:30 AM, and be done at around 4 PM or thereabouts. We also offer a complementary lunch of pizza, sandwiches, chips, and desserts. Let me know if you can help make this tournament another successful one!

Complete stats can be found at
http://bit.ly/2019BI-B
http://bit.ly/2019BI-S
http://bit.ly/2019BI-C

To summarize;
The "Challenge" Division (PSACA's Groundhog Day) lived up to its billing as not even the champions got through unscathed, as Daniel Wright posted a 9-2 record, including a victory in a winner-take-all final against Quest A, 425-250.
1st: Lincolnshire Daniel Wright
2nd: Palatine Quest A
3rd: Buffalo Grove Aptakisic A
4th: Barrington Station A

The Standard division (SCOP MS-9) saw Rolling Meadows Plum Grove A knock off Barrington Station C, 410-275, in the championship, while Arlington Height Our Lady of the Wayside downed Mount Prospect St. Raymond A, 325-250 for 3rd place honors.
1st: Rolling Meadows Plum Grove A
2nd: Barrington Station C
3rd: Arlington Heights Our Lady of the Wayside A
4th: Mount Prospect St. Raymond A
Consolation Champions: Bloomington JHS A
Other consolation playoff pool winners: Buffalo Grove Aptakisic B, Villa Park Albright, Elm Grove (WI) St. Mary's Visitation B

In the "B" Division, Rolling Meadows Plum Grove C avenged an opening round loss to Springfield Franklin D by winning the rematch in the championship, but not after Franklin survived a 3-way tiebreaker, which was broken with half-packet tiebreakers! The runner-up in that tiebreaker Mount Prospect St. Raymond B, did, however, win their final round match, a 265-220 win over Bloomington JHS B in the 3rd place match.
1st: Rolling Meadows Plum Grove C
2nd: Springfield Franklin D
3rd Mount Prospect St. Raymond B
4th Bloomington JHS B

Special thanks to Mike Laudermith, Colby Burnett, Jeremy Nelson, Alex Damisch, Adam Sperber, Adam Silverman, Ali Nagib, Koby Theobald, Andrew Nadig, Dave Zehner, Karl Schmidt, Bissmun Gill, Ann Crumlish, Bryan Lu, Gretchen Coleman, Bob Graham, Sarod Nori, Bill Rohner, Frank Hannon, Stephen Hannon, Kate Hannon, Tarun Voruganti, Archan Das, Roxanne tang, Kyle Asta, Anika Veda, Akul Joshi, Michelle Yang, Peter Chmiel, Justin Abel, Simon Balisi, Timothy Price, Ethan Strombeck, Lilly Chavez, Danny Kim, Shreya Seetharam, Bryan Wan, Michael Chmiel, Nevagay Abel, Liam, Starnes, Abraham Holtermann, and 17 or so Station and Barrington HS students who aren't in the quizbowl community, but see this tournament as a fun way to earn their NJHS or NHS volunteer service hours. Special thanks to statisticians Tyler Vaughn, Brad Fischer, and Kristen Strey for their professionalism and fabulous problem-solving abilities. The tournament definitely lasted longer than recent iterations due to a couple of tiebreakers, both in B and in Challenge, but I think the quizbowl was superb, and that has everything to do with my awesome staff! I hope you can join us for Barrington Invitational XVII, probably in March or April of 2020!
