Online Middle School Tournament (May 2)

Post by CPiGuy »

I am excited to announce the Online Middle School Tournament to be held Saturday, May 2nd through Discord. I will be directing.

Eligibility
All middle school teams are eligible to play. This is a closed tournament, so you'll only be able to play with your actual middle school teammates. If you present a particularly good reason to play as a chimera team, I'll consider it, but I'm not sure what that would be.

We'll be using the WAIT set written by Wayzata High School and edited by various current and former Minnesotans. This set is high school regular difficulty; that is, about the same level as the MSNCT playoffs.

This tournament is not affiliated with NAQT.

Schedule
The tournament will start at 10AM Eastern / 7AM Pacific / calculate this for your own time zone. Tournament schedule will be dependent on number of teams. The tournament will almost certainly feature tossups but no bonuses. (Online tournaments with bonuses tend to run extremely long, limiting the number of rounds teams get to play, and also are generally more prone to misbehavior.)

The tournament will be run through Discord, so players should have Discord accounts before the tournament starts. Discord is a free, widely-used service on which creating an account is easy; if you run into any issues with creating or using a Discord account, let me know and I'll do my best to help you out with it.

Honesty
A brief note on cheating: I know it's a possibility, as it is with every online tournament, and we'll be doing what we can to identify it if it does happen. Having said that: This tournament will not have high stakes. It is an opportunity for players whose quizbowl seasons have been cut short to have fun playing quizbowl with each other. I would hold this tournament even if it were a certainty that there would be cheating, because I think it would be staggeringly unfair to the vast majority of players who wouldn't consider it not to, but please show some respect for your fellow quizbowlers and play honest.

Fees
The registration fee for this tournament will be $60 per team. Payment by Venmo or PayPal is strongly preferred, but you can also mail me a check. If this represents a financial burden, contact me and we'll work something out.

Staff
If you would like to staff this tournament, let me know (and sign up on the spreadsheet). Staffers will be paid. (Probably $20.)

Registration
You can sign up to play or staff here. Coaches are invited to join their teams but are not required. There is no minimum or maximum roster size -- but if you're gonna have a ton of kids, please just register a B team?

You're probably safe holding a spot for Station A.

Hunter will be in for at least one team. And at least on staffer (though we can almost certainly scrounge up more, especially if we remain quarentined here in nyc).

Seoul Foreign School would like to have one team entered but the start is 11 pm. for us 😳

Any chance this could start at 5 or 6:00 pm EST?

Well done on getting this started!

That seems like a pretty inconvenient time for everyone stateside; I think starting at 10AM EST is the best way to accommodate teams.

Sorry if that doesn't work for you, and hopefully you can find a way to play the tournament nonetheless.

Hi Conor,

Yes, you are correct in hindsight, it was a silly request. 😳

Curious how many hours do you expect the tournament to last?

We'll probably play somewhere between 11 and 14 rounds pre-finals (dependent on the field size and exact format); I expect rounds to take somewhere between 15 and 25 minutes since we won't be reading bonuses.

St. Mark's will be known as St. Marx because of school and regional rules.

Hi, Conor!
We (students/Teams and I) are looking forward to this event.
Can you email me some specifics re: payment and Discord. We are not familiar with it.
I'd like the kids all set up well before Wed. of this week to ensure as few glitches as possible.

Also, please email me with specifics re: payment, as my district needs all receipts.
I'm thinking PayPal or a check might be best.

Many thanks!

I'll try to send out an email to everyone registered tomorrow or Tuesday with information.

The server(s) won't be completely set up by the end of the week, but I'll at least make the central server before I send that email.

We've now reached 32 teams, so I'm closing the field.

Additional teams can sign up on a waitlist, and people should expect an email to their contact person tonight.
