Southern California 2021-22 Scheduling Discussion

Post by FJOIII »

Hello everyone! Let’s look forward to next year and start the scheduling of next year’s Southern California quizbowl tournaments!

For those who don’t want to read through all of this background info, the basic idea is that if you’re interested in potentially hosting any history bee/bowl or quizbowl tournament in Southern California in the 2021-2022 year, please message me or email me (freddieoharaiii AT gmail DOT com) and/or reply on this forums thread. For those interested in reading more about what to expect from hosting this year, feel free to read the following paragraphs.

This one will be a unique season to schedule given the uncertainty of if/when we will return to in-person quizbowl play. Few schools or universities have given even vague outlines yet as far as what their policies will be in terms of hosting extracurricular activities on campus in the fall and beyond next year. With that in mind, everything on this thread for now will be very preliminary and flexible. For now, we will work under the assumption that 2021 tournaments will be online. I hope that this ends up being wrong, and we will be able to switch to mostly in-person tournaments, but I’d rather be cautious about our hopes for reopening of facilities.

There are 3 main types of events to schedule on this thread: high school quizbowl tournaments (HS), middle school quizbowl tournaments (MS), and National History Bee and Bowl tournaments (NHBB). The guiding principle is to avoid having any 2 of those types of tournaments on the same day. We will also try to avoid having any of those tournaments on the same date as an ACT or SAT administration day. Traditionally, the default is to have tournaments on Saturday’s, but Sunday tournaments are certainly acceptable if any host finds that more convenient.

We would like to try getting tournaments (especially HS tournaments) more evenly spread out over the year, particularly into the fall. As was noted by Josh Xu last year, there were no HS tournaments in September, October, December, February, or May last year, with two or more occurring in November, January, and April. Ideally we’d hope to change that to have approximately one a month, though practicality dictates that we’ll likely see some deviation from this.

Another guideline to consider would be regarding Junior Varsity (JV) divisions. These are generally restricted, at the tournament director’s discretion, to certain less-experienced players, middle school teams (sometimes), and absolute novices, either from new teams or from returning teams, and use easier and generally shorter questions. Tournament directors who plan to use harder question sets (ones that say “regs+” or otherwise indicate being “hard high school” sets) are strongly encouraged to have separate JV divisions for newer teams or newer players.

Additionally, especially for any tournaments that expect to be held in person, geographic diversity is another consideration. Generally a disproportionate number of hosts are held in San Diego, which can raise the barrier to entry to schools not in San Diego. As such, more hosts in the Los Angeles or Orange Country (or other) areas would be absolutely ideal, particularly if they are able to have JV divisions.

Regarding NHBB tournaments, for those unaware, there are usually 3 regular season tournament question sets offered throughout the course of the year, in descending order of difficulty: A set (hardest), B set (medium), and C set (easiest, though still challenging, especially for anyone new to NHBB). Our goal this year would be to hold at least 2 NHBB tournaments, with at least 1 held anywhere north of San Diego (probably on an easier question set).

Hosting an NHBB tournament is significantly different from hosting HS/MS tournaments, as generally an NHBB representative will be in charge, NHBB will reap most direct profits, and outside staffers will be primarily used. That said, hosts can usually still generate notable funds for their club through lunch concessions. It is generally less investment for somewhat less club profit to host NHBB as opposed to HS/MS tournaments, so if that sounds more convenient for your club, it is definitely something you should consider!

MS tournaments tend to be a bit larger than the average HS tournament, which carries the burden of tending to need a higher number of staffers (external and/or internal), but will also tend to be very profitable for clubs looking to fundraise. They tend to be a bit rarer than HS tournaments, and we usually try to have 3 dedicated MS tournaments in Southern California.

An updated schedule will be maintained on socalquizbowl.org with both preliminary and confirmed tournaments, dates, hosts, and question sets. A schedule will also be maintained on this post as I make edits to update it.

If any prospective coach, player, admin, parent, or anyone else would like to learn more about hosting, playing, or preparing for any tournaments, or anything else, please feel free contact me! If nothing else, I can certainly put you in contact with people who can help you learn more. My email is totally open to anyone who wants to talk about anything even tangentially related to quizbowl in Southern California, from anyone! My email is: freddieoharaiii AT gmail DOT com. There are many great people involved in Southern California quizbowl, all of whom would be happy to help anyone learn more or get involved in any way.

If you have any interest at all in considering hosting any sort of event, please post a reply on this forum thread. If you have an idea of which type of tournament you want to host, (ie: “East HS is interested in hosting an MS tournament in November-December and/or an NHBB tournament in January-February”) please do note that in your post here. It’s absolutely not binding, and helps us to get an idea of what the schedule will look like and where/when we might try and get more hosts!

Below will be an updated list of when HS, MS, or NHBB tournaments will be held in Southern California, as well as SAT and ACT administration dates, and national championship dates, that should be avoided. Dates marked with a "[ ]" are ideal for hosting tournaments. Dates marked with "[x]" are not ideal.

*This tournament is meant for more experienced high school players looking for a challenge and a taste of college quizbowl, so I strongly encourage teams to look over a few sample questions from last year's iteration of the tournament before they register, and consider if this is the tournament for you.
