Where Are You Going To College Next Year? 2014-15

Post by Adventure Temple Trail »

Without further ado, the annual "Where will you be going to college next year?" thread for those in the prospective class of 2019 who want to keep the community informed, or perhaps reach out to college teams reading the boards, or hear about other students who'll be attending the same school. As board staff have noted in previous years, the purpose of this thread is to give answers of the form "I am going to [insert non-hypothetical college here] and will be playing quizbowl there," etc. not to humblebrag, hem, haw, or request decision help or anything like that.

I'm not sure where I'm going yet, I have a list of about 6 schools that I'm considering. Some have quiz bowl teams already, others would need one started. I'll post here again whenever I decide.

This isn't worth an official warning or anything, but please don't make "I'll be going somewhere!" posts either, since they serve little purpose. Just wait until you decide, then post!

I'm really excited about playing quiz bowl at UMD, so could someone from Maryland contact me sometime with any information about their quiz bowl program (or just anything regarding life at UMD)? Thanks.

I will be going to the University of Louisville (Speed School) next year, and (despite my NHBBTV interview) plan on playing quiz bowl (really for a rookie season) if it doesn't conflict too much with band stuff.

If there's any UofL quiz bowlers who see this, an info PM/email would be greatly appreciated, though I've checked out the website already.

I will be attending the University of Louisiana - Monroe in the fall, which means that either
A) I'm done with quizbowl or
B) I'll start a team (probably not as a freshman) or
C) Maybe do something with UL-Lafayette (unlikely)

If anyone here is at ULM, get in contact with me, because quizbowl was fun in high school and I'm a little sad that my career is probably ending.

A team from ULM competed in the somewhat strange Louisiana Collegiate Honors Council tournament in March, so there might be some base to build from with whoever is competing in that. While I'm pretty sure LCHC is not at all connected to the general circuit, there IS a growing college circuit in your area, with Louisiana Tech, Louisiana, and Tulane being active and at least a semi-active team at LSU. I would encourage you to talk with Nick Collins at Louisiana Tech or Jake Sundberg at UL about what the circuit is like right now and what contact that might already exist at ULM. If you have some people to help out, starting a team is not incredibly difficult and I encourage you to explore that path!

Oh yeah, let's do this. What are the current rules about playing on teams within your school's system? Louisiana Tech is also a member of the UL system. Am I about to enter a recruiting war with Jake Sundberg?

Would you like to enter a recruiting war with me? I have many shiny rings to display. In addition, your buzzer fakes do not fool me as I am the master of that craft.

To answer the young gentleman's question, the Louisiana/Texas circuit is actually quite active. Most events get mirrored in the general vicinity of ULM - Tech hosts one every semester, we try to host at least one every semester (more if needed), Rice and A&M host things as well, and Alabama also hosts an event every now and then, although they are not the active powerhouse they once were (sigh). To make it out to most events will probably take a little bit of driving but that's pretty much true of everyone everywhere on the circuit. It's just a bit more cumbersome in the Louisiana/Texas region and the Southeast in general since most of the hosting programs are spread out quite a bit.

On another note, some of you may know that I considered myself retired for the last couple of months. Since this is the "where are you going to college next year" thread I figured I would tell everyone that I actually did well enough in school to return for my 12th year of collegiate quizbowl. Does this make me the senior member amongst active college players? I admit that I feel my old age sometimes, kinda like Kevin Willis did at the end of his NBA career. Maybe I have some more greatness in the buzzer yet - or maybe I'll just put up my same old bland numbers. I don't think I have more than two more years left in me.

ACF and NAQT rules currently diverge on this:
ACF wrote:Students at comprehensive universities within a state university system may no longer join the clubs of other schools in the same system. Any school which offers a full course of undergraduate study must field its own team. Students at graduate-only campuses, such as medical schools not attached to a specific undergraduate school, may still play for another school in the system with the approval of the ACF Eligibility Committee.
NAQT wrote:If a player’s campus does not have an active program, that player may appear for the squad of any of that institution’s branch or associated campuses. If a player exercises this option, per Eligibility Rule 7, the player may only appear for the chosen campus’s squad in subsequent events in the same competition year, except as outlined in Eligibility Rule 8.b.
For what's it's worth, I don't know that the "branch campus" rule applies to ULL and ULM. These are two separate schools who, while technically part of the same overarching system, do not have a formal connection based on one school being the "parent" school of other "branch" school. The names of the schools might suggest otherwise, but ULL and ULM have been separate schools for decades who now have similar names as something of a historical accident, and from WKU's time in the Sun Belt I remember they have really particular positions on their naming conventions that emphasize that neither school is the branch campus of the other.

I will be going to Mercer University, which entails a few things:
1. I likely will attempt to transfer to Georgia Tech, Emory, or Tufts as soon as possible.
2. I will try to help out on my home Georgia circuit as much as possible.
