I'm under the impression that Joe and the other (possibly hypothetical) dedicated James Island lack a coach like you who is dedicated to getting them to more and better tournaments and helping them raise the funds to do so, so the feasibility of this advice might be the bigger issue. Whatever the situation, anyone who's looking to raise funds for their team should know that there are tons of people here who would be happy to help you figure out how to do so. I'd be interested to know if Caesar Rodney or other programs have come up with funding strategies beyond the normal slate of hosting tournaments and what not to deal with the recent cuts.

Yup, the best thing we did this year (which made us at $500-750 and still counting) was a discount card fundraiser that Trey found here: http://www.buyforcharity.com/city-savings-card Especially if you live in a small town and you have a lot of small businesses that have close ties to your school (or would like to), this works great.

But heck, the other thing we did (that made us about $300-400) was just asking for money from businesses and prominent people in the area. I can imagine that a place like James Island/Charleston would have tons of richer business/donors than little Dover Delaware, so that may work even better. We wrote a very professional letter explaining why quizbowl is an important activity for the school (as opposed to just all the sport championships our school wins all the time) and how we don't get any funding for it. So, yeah, we begged a little, but i'm not going to complain about the few hundred bucks we got from it.

We still have our coach, of course. These questions are horrible. They also use our buzzers, that we have used since 1984 for every practice. Half of them are about Carmel High School, and the "host" looks like he's 12 years old. He's probably a high school student.

Chris, if you are referring to Mrs. Meek, the Head Coach at James Island, I can assure you, having known her for over 20 years, that she is an excellent Coach and certainly dedicated to getting her players to compete as much as possible. James Island has for many years competed in the best tournaments (and continues to do so) in our part of the country. I am unsure of the reason as to why you would make that remark without knowing the history of James Island's participation in tournaments over the years. I personally know that the school system James Island is in supports quiz bowl; however, the only school that competes outside their local tournaments is James Island. This is a result of Mrs. Meek's efforts and desires to build a nationally competitive quiz bowl program over the past 20 years.

I'm pretty sure Chris is referring to Meek's refusal to take JI to HSNCT and NSC, forcing them to go to NAC instead.

Has JI been to more than just the 2007 HSNCT as national tournaments (obviously not counting NAC or ASCN) in its past?

Here are a few clips from my school's local TV competition that I just got around to uploading. Enjoy them in all their current events-filled, one-liner, meandering trivial glory. Also, I like to think I'm now a bit less....enthusiastic when answering than I used to be.

Hey...could you put this somewhere other than Facebook (youtube?). If this is the Solo I think it is, then I'd be interested in seeing what it looked like to the audience.

There used to a video of a CCHS Faculty vs. Faculty game (with questions by Jerry, Tony, and Paul) online, but I'm not sure what happened to it. There's also a regularly televised local scholar bowl show, Hi-Q, that CCHS plays in. I have a VHS of a game at home, and there are some DVDs at the school, but nothing online. Which is a pity, since Ben wrote all of our introductions.

I have no idea how I managed to stumble upon this set of videos but here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/user/nhptvadmin# ... 5M9ODW-mt0

This is their most recent game, which is also the final. The new season will begin next fall: http://www.youtube.com/user/nhptvadmin# ... 5M9ODW-mt0

The game is called "The Grante State Challenge" and it features teams from across New Hampshire competing against each other for a monetary prize and a shiny trophy. The famed Phillips Exeter Academy participated last year, but I believe they couldn't participate this year due to regulations saying that a team can only play every other year. The game is most 2-3 sentence tossups combined with some painfully simple math tossups and sporadic elementary school spelling questions, but it's still fun to watch.

And now for something completely different............the "Kickoff Show" for the fifth season of WCMU's "Quiz Central".

There has been plenty of Quiz Bowl on TV over the years, insofar as "Quiz Bowl" started off as a television event (and then evolved beyond that).

I don't ever recall seeing a "Season review/upcoming season preview" type program included with the televised QB competition programming. Which makes the half-hour video linked above quite notable, not only for being the first of its type, but also, all things considered, being pretty well put-together.

I think some of the "highlight segements" could have included more of the tossup questions to give context to the answers being given, but the interview portions are quite interesting, and mixed in well with salient moments from the competition in the previous season.

This appears to be from National Academic League, a.k.a. "quiz bowl-esque activity for sports fans and rules lawyers" (note the argument over whether a grammar question asking for the past participle is correct if the word "have" is/is not included).
