So if you ever drive from Chicago to Ann Arbor, MI (which you will do a million times if you play quizbowl for UChicago), there's a billboard in Indiana for a Spanish restaurant in Valparaiso, IN. In the past, that billboard has prominently featured the sentence "THE ONLY SPANISH RESTAURANT IN INDIANA".

In summer 2010, a bunch of current and former UChicago people actually got into a car, drove to Valpo, and had lunch at the restaurant. It was actually really good. Here's a picture of David Seal enjoying himself there, the summer before starting at UVA.

This derives from the 2004 ICT at WUSTL. Various members of the Berkeley and UCLA teams joined me for a morning of bird observation. Much amusement ensued when the best bird of the day was unironically a yellow-bellied sapsucker.

The Canadian invasion at the 2005 ICT. Ottawa (Jeff, myself, Shauna, Tamara in our "what were we thinking" custom T-shirts), UBC (Luka, Fred, Brendan, Mike) and McGill (Andrew, John, Angus, Jon).

Somewhere around this time, Canadian quizbowl changed from "cute backwater" to "insufferable jerks", a dark age that lasted from roughly the first Ottawa Hybrid in 2005 to the 2009 VETO schism.

If it helps, I don't recall anyone (other than, possibly, the weirdly intense Toronto team) being anything but nice to us at the 2007 Brock SCT. No ethnic slurs, no bizarre assertions that there might somewhere be a village called "The Massacre of Kiev", nothing. A great time was had by all.

Here is a photo of the winning team at the 2012 British Student Quiz Championships. From left to right, it's Alison Hudson, Chris Savory, me, and Alex Bubb. Many of you may remember Alison for playing on several of the great State College teams from 2004-2007.

There's another wonderful thing to note about this photograph, which is the window behind us. We walked in and sat down in these seats to play Manchester in our second round game. This game took place at Imperial College in London, and right across the street was an apartment building. I am told that an extremely attractive young woman got out of the shower and began laboriously brushing her hair over the course of almost the entire game while standing naked in her window. Manchester played extremely poorly. Facing away from the window, my team played on undistracted and cruised to a dominant victory.

(Edit -- in retrospect I think this particular photo was taken in the basement, not the room with the view.)

This is my high school scholastic bowl team. I think this picture is from the fall of 2003. I am in the back row, upper right, with my arms crossed and the calculator watch on my wrist.

My high school (Roycemore, in Evanston, IL) played, and I think still plays, exclusively in something called the Metro North League, which is composed of something like 12 schools who each play each other twice a year. These games are spread out over 3-4 game tournaments called "meets" that take place on weekday nights. Loyola Academy and St. Igantius were in the league when I was playing, and they've since gone on to engage with the broader quizbowl world. I think I'm the only person from Roycemore to discover real quizbowl.

My Merivale team from 2003 (except Colin Mochrie, who was a "celebrity judge") winning CBC's "SmartAsk!". See QBWiki for info about this GREAT show.

My anecdote: immediately after winning, everyone (players, studio techs, audience) was crowding the set. Director was trying to wrap up filming to get a parting shot of us with the trophy and called me and my teammates over. Someone was blocking my path, and, in the heat of the moment, I blurted "Get out of my way!" That obstruction was Colin Mochrie, and so went my brush with celebrity.

Me at SUBMIT after getting tired of Charles Hang constantly taking photos of people. I am thankful for this one photo, however. It is notable that Charles Hang has taken most of the photos that have ever been taken of me at quizbowl tournaments. I was hoping to keep the number at zero, but alas, there is now visual evidence that I am a quizbowl player. Notice the cackling Jacob O'Rourke in the background. A classic photo. At least a #3 seed in the Schindler bracket.

This picture was taken during our downtown Chicago excursion after the 2011 NSC. I'm not sure really what Patrick Liao was thinking. There are many more pictures I have taken of Patrick doing bizarre things during our high school time. Maybe publicizing these pictures will finally give him the push to get Eric that championship?

I was thinking about "The Rib" when this photo was taken. For those who are unaware, 'The Rib" was a dish at Tam Tam, an African restaurant in Minneapolis. It has been described as "tasting like every type of meat" and it is one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. Sadly, Tam Tam is no more.

Another fun fact about this picture: It was taken during ICT 2007, and if you look closely, you'll see 18 year old me is holding a beer. After this picture was taken I told Alice, "Please don't post this to Facebook, my mom doesn't know I drink."

For further clarity, it was called the Hunter's Rib, and it was phenomenal. I was able to order it once, during the most awkward outing to the Walker Art Center ever, but no one was able to order it later* during the Chicago-Minnesota joint outing after ACF Fall 2008. I assume the baleful influence of Shantanu led directly to Tam Tam's closing soon thereafter.

*I may have the chronology here confused, but it's funnier this way.

You're correct that no one was able to order it after Fall 2008 (although whether that was before or after your Walker excursion I cannot say). The Tam Tam run of 2008 was when I learned who Jimmy Ready was!

This photograph was taken in the Rose and Crown pub on North Parade, Oxford, in late February 2011.

It is notable because it shows five former presidents of the Oxford University Quiz Society - from left to right: Edmund Dickinson, Tom Speller, Peter Sloman, Kate Morris, and, far right, Maris Rowe-McCulloch.

Additionally pictured is Kyle Haddad-Fonda, who transformed the Oxford team from one that reliably won one match a year against Cambridge to one that wins several matches a year against diverse teams on a functional national circuit. Though not exclusively, those pictured with him here were among the main leaders in the organisational rebirth of a quizbowl circuit in the UK over the years 2010-12.

I am stunned (and incredibly happy) that there is a record of this. As I recall, this was either right before or right after we saw a poster for "Knocked Up," featuring a then-little-known Seth Rogen, and the David Seal/Seth Rogen similarities were first noticed.
