2021 ACF Nationals: August 7-8, Northwestern

Post by kearnm7 »

2021 ACF Nationals will be held August 7-8 at Northwestern University, in the Technological Institute ("Tech"). Cody Voight will serve as Tournament Director.

Editing
This tournament will be head-edited by Ryan Westbrook and Matthew Bollinger, with support from Jordan Brownstein, Jack Mehr, Eric Mukherjee, Derek So, Jerry Vinokurov, and Jennie Yang.

Eligibility
Information on who is eligible to play ACF tournaments can be found on the ACF website under eligibility. Please note that this tournament counts as part of the 2020-2021 competition year, despite being held in August.

Qualification
Qualification for this tournament has been determined on the basis of team PPBs from the 2021 ACF Nationals qualifier.

Packet Submission
The editors of ACF Nationals have written 13 packets this year. A number of teams submitted packets for the canceled 2020 tournament, which will make an additional 10 packets, for a total of 23 packets. Please see below for a list of team-submitted packets and the associated discounts.

The distribution for ACF Nationals submitted packets is posted here.

Finalized tossups for 2021 ACF Nationals will be capped at 8 lines in 10 point Times New Roman.

The base fee for 2021 ACF Nationals is $375.
  • -$100 packet submission discount: Columbia, Berkeley A, Chicago B.
  • -$50 packet submission discount: Chicago A, Florida A, OSU A
  • -$25 packet submission discount: Texas A, UIUC A.
  • Teams that submitted a packet and did not qualify for the tournament or will otherwise not attend may still have their packets used for ACF Nationals. The discount the packet would have earned will roll over to the next ACF tournament that the school sends a team to. If the discount is greater than $70 (ACF’s share of tournament fees), it can be spread among multiple teams from the same school, or the difference between $70 and the amount of the discount can be rolled over to a further tournament. Rolling over a discount does not preclude submitting a packet for the next ACF tournament, should that be required.
  • Minnesota A (-$100), UC Davis A (-$50), Michigan A (-$50), and Duke A (-$25) will receive discounts that can be rolled over to other tournaments if they do not qualify for this edition of ACF Nationals.
  • 2021 ACF Nationals will continue to offer an additional $50 discount to any team that submits a packet with almost all questions usable with little to no editing. Florida A and Chicago A have received this discount.
  • Buzzer discount: -$10 per working system (maximum of 3)
Field Size
The field for 2021 ACF Nationals is 22 teams.

Staffing
If you would like to staff ACF Nationals, please send an email both to [email protected] and [email protected] with the subject line "ACF Nationals staffing". Preference will be given to those located in the Greater Chicagoland Area, then those in the Midwest.

Hello! Now that the site is decided, we were wondering if you've made any hotel plans or if we should look for a place to stay by ourselves. Thanks!

We are looking into the possibility but do not expect to reserve a hotel block, so our suggestion is to seek alternative accommodations. If we do reserve a block, we will provide details in this thread in a few days.

Will the remaining waitlisted teams be informed of their qualification status by tomorrow? It's understandable that a 3-way tie is going to be hard to break, but flights to O'Hare aren't getting any cheaper.

Yes, I'd expect to provide an update to waitlisted teams by tomorrow night, at the latest.

ACF has resolved the tiebreak between Minnesota A and Harvard B by flipping a coin, with Harvard B winning the flip and being offered a bid. ACF chose to break the tie in this manner because no tiebreaker method was identified at the time of the qualifier and other methods had potential for bias. Minnesota A remains first on the wait-list and will be offered a bid if the field expands, as is ACF’s hope. Any further ties for qualification will also be resolved in this manner.

The 22-team field is set, barring a possible field expansion to 24 teams if additional rooms at Northwestern come available. ACF has yet to hear back on its request in that matter.

Please note that I have updated the original post to reflect that games will occur in the "Technological Institute," more commonly called "Tech." More details and specifics will be available as we approach the tournament.

An additional room at Northwestern has come available, so ACF will be expanding the field of 2021 Nationals to 24 teams. This will be the final field expansion. Teams have been invited off the waitlist in order of finish at the ACF Nationals qualifier.

I am attaching a page of QR codes & important links to this post. Everyone's team folder will have a printed version of this. It includes a link to the final prelims schedule, two copies of which are included in your team folder. No games have moved from the draft prelim schedule that was sent out on August 1, though some other information has been updated.

Stanford, Columbia, and Ohio State are currently playing a 3-way tiebreaker for disadvantaged in the finals against Florida.

Cornell will have the disadvantage against Brown for the UG championship.

Will there be a stream for the finals? If not, can someone official please give explicit permission for live bloggers to spoil question content? This makes for a much more engaging watching experience.

The team wrap-up email has been sent to attendees, and is cross-posted here:
Dear 2021 ACF Nationals attendees,

Thank you all for attending ACF Nationals. It was a true pleasure to serve as your Tournament Director, and I found it to be a very special tournament. I hope everyone had a great time and got to play some exciting games.

Congratulations to our 2021 ACF Nationals Overall Champions, Florida, who beat Columbia in the second game of an advantaged final. Columbia reached the second final game by winning four straight must-win games, including advancing out of a two-game 3-way play-in tiebreaker (beating Ohio State and Stanford, with whom they were tied at the end of the playoffs). The remaining trophy standings were: Undergraduate and DII Champion - Brown; Undergraduate Second Place - Cornell; Overall Third Place - Stanford. The final statistics for the tournament are located here, with due thanks to your Stat Director Michael Kearney. Please direct stats corrections to me ([email protected]) and I will make sure they are addressed where possible.

I would like to particularly commend everyone on their diligence with respect to our COVID guidance. With that in mind, I ask that you please contact me if you have a positive COVID test between August 9 and 15. I will keep you anonymous, but it is important that I contact attendees to let them know if someone who attended the tournament tested positive for COVID.

The 2021 ACF Nationals Experience Survey is open for submissions. We would love to hear from you via the survey, or directly via other channels, including email. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the tournament, please let me know and if there's anything you need from me, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you,
