NAQT Collegiate Novice (CNS-204C) @ Carnegie Mellon (9/25)

Post by ezekiel »

Carnegie Mellon Quizbowl will host a mirror of CNS-204C, NAQT's collegiate novice tournament, on our Pittsburgh campus on Saturday, September 25, 2021. The field has a cap of 18 teams.

We are currently planning to hold this tournament in person, in Porter Hall. We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation, and will transition the tournament to be fully-online if the need arises. Carnegie Mellon's Visitor Protocol currently allows in-person visitors for events on campus, but it is entirely possible that the university will change the campus posture with relatively short notice, which may force us to change the tournament delivery method accordingly. Please keep this in mind when booking travel and/or accomodations. We will keep this post promptly and thoroughly updated with any potential changes.

All attendees (players, coaches, and staff) will be required to wear facial coverings throughout the duration of the tournament.

If you have any specific requests or requirements (e.g. you have a hard deadline for booking travel, you can attend the tournament only if it's fully-online, your university needs specific paperwork for approving travel, etc.) please reach out to us at [email protected] and we'll do our best to help.

Fees
$60 per team
-$5/school per buzzer system (max of 2). Buzzer systems must have eight functional buzzers.
-$10/school per capable moderator
Minimum fee: $40 per team
The minimum fee per team will be charged for schools that did not attend any tournaments in the 2020-21 academic year.

Please bring payment (cash or checks made out to “Carnegie Mellon University”) on the morning of the tournament. Payment (or sufficient evidence that payment was processed/sent) not received within a week after the tournament will be subject to a late fine of an additional $10 per week, up to double the original amount.

Registration
We will be using NAQT's registration system. To register, please create an account and register at https://www.naqt.com/go/register/12567. If possible at the time of registration, please also indicate if you have players who intend to request an exception to the eligibility criteria (see below). If you have any questions, please let us know at [email protected].

Eligibility
As this is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl, the following eligibility rules are in place:
  1. No high school teams or players are eligible.
  2. Anyone in college who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
  3. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the tournament director for permission to play:
    1. If you played a collegiate quizbowl tournament before the 2020-21 academic year.
    2. If you have ever finished in the top 20 in scoring at PACE NSC or been a tournament all-star at a NAQT high school championship (HSNCT or SSNCT), or played on a team that finished in the top 16 at NSC or t-21 at HSNCT.
    3. If you ever led a team in scoring that made it beyond the first round of the HSNCT or SSNCT playoffs, or led a team in scoring that made the top 40 at NSC.
    4. If you have ever scored at least 25 points per game overall at any college tournament.
    5. If you have ever won any college tournament.
  4. Anyone in college who does not fall into any of the five categories listed in Rule 3 is automatically eligible to play.
Experienced college players are encouraged to attend as staffers. Please email us at [email protected] if you have questions about eligibility or any other aspect of the tournament!

Update: We will be requiring all attendees to either be vaccinated or a have had negative COVID-19 test in the 7 days before the tournament. Each team should send the documentation (photo of vaccine card or whatever document you recieve for a negative test) to cmuquizbowl [at] gmail.com before midnight the day before the tournament. Please send all the documents for your entire team consolidated in one email, if possible.

This is in addition to the event-wide mask requirement. We will also do our best to space out teams as much as the buzzer systems will allow.
