ACF Fall UK 2013 at Oxford

Post by Ewan MacAulay » Mon Aug 12, 2013 1:04 pm

I'm pleased to announce that Oxford will be holding the UK mirror of ACF Fall on the 2nd of November 2013. We aim to start the first match at 10 a.m. sharp, so please arrive by 9:45 at the latest. The questions will be briticised in a similar manner to previous UK tournaments. Due to our unique circumstances (ie. not being in North America), payment will be made to "Oxford University Quiz Society" on the day of the tournament and we'll take it from there. We will announce prices closer to the date of the tournament so we can used up-to-date exchange rates.

Registration
To register for this tournament, please e-mail us at quiz.society@studentclubs.ox.ac.uk and tell us how many teams you'd like to bring.

Payment
We're still sorting out payment details with ACF, and we will send another e-mail when we've settled that. At the moment, we can definitely say that you will have to bring a cheque payable to Oxford University Quiz Society, and that significant discounts will be awarded to teams who:
-Bring working buzzer sets (~£5 per working buzzer set)
-Bring someone to moderate (how much a discount to be confirmed)
-Are new to quizbowl
-Submit packets to ACF (see below)

Packet Submission
As this is an ACF tournament, any team with at least one person on it who played in a university-level academic quizbowl tournament prior to the 1st of September 2012 is required to submit a packet of questions (24 tossups and 24 bonuses) in order to participate in an ACF tournament. Teams required to submit packets who do not submit one by the final deadline will be dropped from the tournament. Packets should be submitted to acf.fall.2013@gmail.com and the subject line "ACF Fall 2013: [Team Name]" should be used.
Any submitted packets should follow the ACF Packet Submission Guidelines, which are listed at: http://acf-quizbowl.com/documents/2012- ... uidelines/
The difficulty of ACF Fall 2013 is intended to be similar to that of previous ACF Fall tournaments. The packets for these can be found at collegiate.quizbowlpackets.com. Remember that this tournament is meant to be accessible to new teams who have never played quizbowl before, in both your answerlines and your clue selections. If you suspect that an answer is too hard, it probably is.

If you plan to send multiple teams, PLEASE make sure that you do not collaborate on your packets or discuss them with people from other teams.

Packet Submission Schedule
The earlier you submit your packet, the less you have to pay to play this tournament. ACF's packet deadlines are listed below. We don't know how much exactly the discounts for packet submission will be, but they probably be similar to the US values.

Packet submitted before 11:59 PM eastern time on:
September 8, 2013: -$50
September 22, 2013: -$25 (-$50 for teams not required to submit packets)
October 6, 2013: No penalty (-$25 for teams not required to submit packets)
October 13, 2013: +$25
October 20, 2013: +$50
After Oct. 20, 2013: The editors may grant one or more 24-hour extensions at an additional penalty of $10 per day.

Queries
If you have any questions about ACF Fall itself, please e-mail the editors at acf.fall.2013@gmail.com
If you have any questions about our mirror in particular, please e-mail ewan.macaulay@chch.ox.ac.uk

The list of teams who have registered with ACF for this tournament can be found here. Looks like Southampton, Manchester A, Warwick, and Oxford Brookes still need to sign up--if those teams could do so by filling out this form, we would appreciate it. Thanks!

Oxford A beat Oxford B in an advantaged final in this tournament, which was run on a slightly Briticised version of the ACF Fall set. Many thanks to all those who wrote questions on very British things, to the moderators, and to all those who played.

Stats to follow.
