NAQT Collegiate Novice at Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI; 21 Sept 2019)

Post by CPiGuy »

The University of Michigan quizbowl team is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a collegiate novice tournament on Saturday, September 21, 2019. As is usual for U-M tournaments, it will take place on the upper floors of Mason Hall and begin at 9:00 AM, with registration beginning at 8:15AM.

Question Set and Eligibility

The tournament will use NAQT's CNS-186C set. (This is the same set being used by other Collegiate Novice tournaments.) We will likely truncate rounds to use 20 tossups and 20 bonuses per round, and the rounds will not be conducted on the clock. We will otherwise use NAQT's rules.

NAQT's eligibility rules apply, with the following additions:

-- This is a collegiate novice tournament intended to introduce new college players to collegiate quizbowl. As a result, no high school teams or players are eligible. (In addition, the question set being used overlaps with NAQT's IS-186 high school set, so high school players and coaches should not staff or spectate the tournament.)
-- Anyone in college who has never played quizbowl before (regardless of whether or not they have played other academic competitions, such as history bee or ocean science bowl) is automatically eligible.
-- Other players are eligible unless they fall into one or more of the following categories:
---- Players who played an academic college quizbowl tournament before the 2018-19 academic year.
---- Players who finished in the top 20 individually in scoring at PACE NSC or who received all-star awards at HSNCT or SSNCT.
---- Players who scored more than 10 PPG on a team that finished in the top 16 at PACE NSC or at least t-21 at HSNCT.
---- Players who led a team in scoring that made it beyond the first round of the playoffs at HSNCT or that finished in the top 40 at PACE NSC.
---- Players who have ever scored at least 25 PPG on an all-subject academic college tournament.
---- Players who have scored more than 10 PPG on a team that won an all-subject academic college tournament.
-- Players who fall into one or more of the above categories must apply for permission to play. If you or a member of your team has such a request, email me at [email protected] and explain it.

Fees and Payment

All fees are in USD.
+85: first team from a school
+75: subsequent teams from that school
-5: per buzzer system
-5: per qualified staffer
-10: per 200 miles traveled each way to the tournament site
-10: for each player less than four on your team, if you have only one team (if you have two or more teams, you do not get this discount)
-20: for each team from a school that competed in no tournaments in the 2018-19 academic year

The minimum fee per team is $40.

Registration

To register, you must fill out this Google form. No other method of registration will be accepted -- if you e.g. email me to register, you run the risk of being told that there are not enough rooms/buzzers/staffers for your team to play! Please register by the end of the day on September 14th (the previous Saturday) to give us enough time to reserve rooms and arrange staffers. You need not know the exact details of your registration, but we ask that you at least give us the minimum number of buzzers and staffers you will be bringing, as well as an accurate account of the number of teams you will be bringing.
