2020 Mid-Atlantic SCT at Penn

Post by mtebbe »

I am pleased to announce that the Mid-Atlantic site of the NAQT Sectional Championship Tournament will take place at Penn on February 8, 2020.

QUESTIONS

This tournament will have two divisions, which will be played on their corresponding SCT sets. These will use rounds of 22 tossups and 22 bonuses, and will be untimed.

Eligibility rules can be found at NAQT's website. Players are eligible for Division II as long as they have not either played ICT or played on a team that qualified for ICT. All players on a team must be Division II eligible in order for the team to play in Division II.

FEES

Base fee: $145 for the first team
Fee for second and additional teams: $120 per team
Working buzzer discount: $10 each (at least 4 working buzzers per side)
Approved moderator discount: $40 each
New team discount: $20/team that from a school that did not host or compete in SCT in the last two years
Travel discount: $10 (more than 200 miles one way according to Google maps)

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

METHOD OF PAYMENT (borrowed from Cody Voight)

All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment in person right before the tournament starts, but we will accept checks by mail ahead of time if your procedures require it. Teams who do not pay by the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount before we start mailing letters to your school administration about it.

We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or quizbowl club funds. We have no ability to process purchase orders or credit cards, but we will accept Paypal and Venmo. Bringing forms of payment outside of the three listed will be considered nonpayment and subject you to the $25 late payment penalty.

All checks must be made out to either "Nitin Rao" or "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania" (must be exact wording). If you bring a check not made out to either "Nitin Rao" or "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania" and have no other method of paying for the tournament, you will be subject to the $25 late payment penalty. If you require a pre-tournament invoice or W9 in order to have a check cut, let us know early enough for your school to process the payment. We can generally send you an invoice the same day.

REGISTRATION: This tournament uses NAQT's online registration system. Teams may register here: https://www.naqt.com/registration/regis ... &type=TEAM

Registration closes 1 week before the tournament. Schools bringing more than four teams are strongly encouraged to bring at least one staffer.

Would there be a field cap and field update for this tourney?

The current field is here.

In general, SCT fields do not have caps- registration remains open for everyone until one week before the tournament. (We know that there can be logistical reasons to avoid large field sizes, and we do our best to work with the SCT hosts to deal with those issues.)

Congratulations to Columbia A for winning D1 in a one-game final against Columbia B, Delaware for winning UG outright, and Rutgers B for winning D2 in a one-game final against Columbia C!

A massive thank you to all the external staffers who helped out yesterday: Mitch Baron, Pratik Mishra, Daniel Richardson, Jakobi Deslouches, Dwight Kidder, Saul Hankin, Halton Pi, Caroline Mao, David Song, James Hadley, JinAh Kim, and Jordan Brownstein. In addition, thank you to Antonio Jimenez, who did an excellent job with the stats, and to Sam Botterbusch, Sarah Potts, and Jack Sugrue, who helped me out a ton in organizing this logistical nightmare of a tournament. This tournament would not have run so smoothly if they had not all contributed so much.

Stats will be posted later today.

(This question is mostly directed at NAQT, not Penn:)

Why are teams 3 through 8 in Division II all listed as "TBD" on NAQT's website?

We're double-checking our ranking policy for the six-way tie in the top two parallel playoff pools. (The 28-team Division II field at this site required a non-standard format, as NAQT's listed approved formats for SCTs only go up to 24 teams.)

Of course, we will make a decision about this before we issue ICT invitations (we're still waiting on stat corrections for at least three more sites, so this issue alone is not holding back invitations).

Division II teams for this site have been ranked (we treated the teams with a 1-2 playoff record as a six-way tie for third place).
