JORDU: A Jazz Side Event (Summer 2021)

Post by Asterias Wrathbunny »

Will Bordowitz and I are in the process of writing JORDU (Jazz is Often Rare and Disappointingly Unappreciated), a side event that will be ready by the summer of 2021. This set's difficulty will be open-level. The intent behind this set is to expose interested players to jazz history and composition in a fun and engaging manner. I aim to focus on composition, style, and technique when possible, while keeping all clues unambiguous. We will have 6 packets of 20 powermarked tossups.

The distribution follows:

6 bop - be-bop, hard bop, post-bop
4 origins
3 big band
3 contemporary/other
2 jazz fusion
1 vocal performance
1 free jazz/avant-garde

There are no definitive mirrors yet, but the set will most likely be ready by PACE NSC.

Update: I have adjusted the original post and marked major changes in underline, most notably more bop content.

Having now read the first post more carefully, I'm alarmed to discover that the tossups are going to be 10-11 lines long. What is the reasoning behind this? This would be concerning for any sort of tournament, but especially for one that's on a fairly specialized topic (by the standards of quizbowl).

The 10-11 lines is with Times 12 pt font and includes bracketed pronunciations. All tossups we have written so far are shorter than both the Django tossup from Fall Open and St Louis Blues from RULFO, so there shouldn't be an issue with question length.

What are the plans for this set now that all mirror events are postponed are cancelled? I’m still very interested in playing this set though I’m much less interested if the first mirror will be online.

This set will not be played until the next in-person open tournament where there is enough interest to play it, so at the earliest fall/winter of 2020. As of now, I'm not really interested in hosting an online mirror due to the amount of effort I'm putting into this and the ease of cheating on a side event with no precursor, meaning any accusation of cheating based on statistics would be essentially baseless. Also, it's only ~60% complete right now.

Several people have asked me about JORDU recently so here's an update. The set is almost complete, and will be ready to play at events this summer. I am looking to have the first mirror the weekend of Chicago Open (August 21-22), and intend for the first mirror to be played as doubles. Here is a spreadsheet for team formation and staff. It will cost $10 per team to play.

I also plan on hosting an online mirror, likely in the fall.

I'm looking for a teammate who is looking to get last place in this tournament. Or, I guess, someone who wants to make this tournament more challenging for themselves by effectively playing solo. Which is to say I'm putting myself out there as a buzzer rock for this event.

I will be running the tournament tomorrow, it will be starting as soon as MUSES is done. Please let me know if you’re playing and have buzzers available, we’ll need 3 for the tournament.

As soon as MUSES ends, we will meet in LR3 for a brief intro before starting. The team list and schedule can be found here, please update your team if necessary. If anyone not listed wants to play, you can join as a third on an existing team.

I can read for this if needed, but I don't have a laptop so probably can't do online scoresheets if those are being used (or need tutorial).

Thanks for writing and hosting this! It was enjoyable even for someone as bad at jazz content as me. Am I missing instructions on where to pay for the tournament, or was it a free tournament?
