2021 ACF Regionals at University of Toronto (1/30/2021)

Post by hannibalbarca »

I am pleased to announce that the Eastern Canada site of 2021 ACF Regionals will be held at Toronto on Saturday, January 30, 2021.

The tournament will take place virtually on Discord. The opening meeting will begin at 9:45 EST and gameplay will begin at 10:00 EST. Joshua Lane will be the tournament director. Please direct any questions about this site to Joshua Lane at [email protected].

Eligibility
The tournament will follow ACF’s eligibility rules. In general, teams where players are all attending the same school and all taking at least one class for credit during the 2020–2021 school year are eligible to play 2021 ACF Regionals. Questions about eligibility should be directed to [email protected].

Rules
This tournament will follow ACF’s gameplay rules. Please note that ACF’s rules have been modified for online gameplay.

Registration
Fill out the central 2021 ACF Regionals registration form with all relevant information. You may view the field for each site here.

If possible, teams should register for the site that is geographically closest to them and/or is in the region they would normally attend. The field cap for all sites is 18, after which teams will be placed on a waitlist or potentially assigned to another site. Please register by January 25, 2021.
Fees
  • Base fee: $130
  • New to quizbowl discount: −$80
  • Shorthanded discount (1–2 players): −$60
  • Staffers: −$25 per staffer with a functional laptop. Staffers must register with ACF in advance by filling out the central staff registration form.
The new to quizbowl discount is intended for schools that did not send a team to any regular collegiate academic tournament (exclusively Novice tournaments do not count) since September 2019, and have no one on the team(s) claiming this discount who played those tournaments for another school.

Packet Submission
Any team with at least two people on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament* (either as a college student or as a high school student) prior to September 1, 2019, is required to submit a half-packet. Please email [email protected] if you are unsure whether your team is required to submit a half-packet. A team that is not required to submit a packet may submit an optional packet by the no-penalty deadline for a $50 discount.

* For these purposes, all ACF tournaments, NAQT SCT (Division I or Division II), NAQT ICT, and typical college-level academic invitationals count as regular collegiate academic tournaments. Pop culture or “hybrid” tournaments, HCASC, and tournaments played on NAQT’s Collegiate Novice series sets do not.

Here is the submission schedule:
  • November 22nd, 2020: −$50
  • December 6th, 2020: −$25
  • December 20th, 2020: no penalty
  • January 3rd, 2021: +$25
  • January 17th, 2021: +$50
If teams required to submit a half-packet have not submitted by January 24th, they will be dropped from the tournament, with no exceptions.

If your team is obligated to submit a half-packet or wishes to do so, please register with this form by January 3, 2021. A half-packet distribution will be mailed to you. If you register and do not receive a half-packet distribution in a timely manner, please email [email protected].

Here's the logistics email I'll be sending to team contacts:

Hello teams,
Thanks for signing up for ACF Regionals! I will be dragging my creaky old bones out of retirement to be your TD for this event.

If you are not already, please familiarize yourself and your team with Discord and its interface, as well as the ACF competition rules. Please also note that webcams are REQUIRED for this event, and let me know ASAP if this is going to cause some kind of problem for you.

This tournament will start at 10AM EST sharp on Saturday, January 30th. The pre-tournament meeting will be at 9:45 AM, please be in the discord server by then. Please let me know if for some reason you are going to be late. But don’t be late. But let me know if you will be (But don’t be). I have generated a schedule for you, it is attached to this email.

You can join the discord server here (link). When you join the server, please set your nickname to your own name. I or another moderator will assign you the proper team role before Saturday. Each round and room combination will have a separate voice and text channel. Once given a team role, you should have access to only those channels specified in the schedule--if this is not the case, please let me know sooner rather than later. DO THE HONOUR PLEDGE OTHERWISE I WON’T GIVE YOU A ROLE AND YOU WILL BE STUCK IN A STATELESS EXISTENCE which isn’t fun or competitive. Breaking the honour code (e.g. cheating, being rude/disrespectful/offensive) will result in disqualification from the tournament.

We have 9 teams and so we will be playing a 9-game round robin with one bye for each team. There will be an advantaged final if necessary.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me by email, HSQB, Discord, or Facebook. Hope to see you all soon for a great tournament.

Thanks so much to everyone who came out yesterday! Hope you all had a good time. Big thanks especially to my staffers and to Aaron for setting up the tournament Discord server for me. Stats are now available here. Please let me know if you see any mistakes.
