Delta Burke mini-mirror for Lower Mid-Atlantic novices - 2/13/21 , VCU/online

Post by Matt Weiner »

Per recent discussion with area teams, VCU will be holding a collegiate novice event on Saturday, February 13 via Zoom. This will last from 11am to about 3pm as a half-day tournament. If the field size allows we can do some kind of power-matching system, otherwise it will just be 5 or so pre-scheduled games per team. The idea here is to let new players get immediate exposure to playing full games against other teams, and to include people who may not be able to commit to the normal length of a full online tournament, in lieu of running a tournament with a full playoff structure. We hope that participants will enjoy this event and subsequently register for the full-length tournaments coming up in our region such as WORKSHOP, Spring Novice, and Southeast-Midwest Housewrite.

Please contact [email protected] to register teams and staffers for this event.

We will be using the 2020-2021 Delta Burke question set produced by Valencia Community College, which ought to be very similar in style and difficulty to past versions of that set, e.g.: https://collegiate.quizbowlpackets.com/2362/ Games will use the ACF online rules plus power tossups.

All teams should consist of players eligible to participate for a single school by the ACF eligibility rules. This is a novice-only tournament targeted at brand new players recruited at your spring activities fair and other players who have very little quizbowl experience, so the further eligibility restrictions are as follows:

*No players who played at the HSNCT or PACE NSC in high school.
*No players who ever scored 50 ppg or more in any high school tournament.
*No players who have ever scored 35 ppg or more in any college tournament.
*No players who have ever scored 20 ppg or more on a team that placed in the top 20%, rounded down, of a non-novice college tournament with 10 or more teams in the field.
*Grad students are eligible only if they have never played any college quizbowl tournament before and otherwise meet the above restrictions (i.e. if they are totally new players).

If you have a player whom you believe meets the spirit of this tournament but does not qualify according to the letter of the guidelines, let me know and we can discuss.

Since we are using a short schedule and this is intended as a low-cost outreach event, we encourage teams to avoid using substitutions - try to enter multiple teams if you have more than 4 players.

We are currently opening the field to colleges located in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, DC, and North Carolina and most likely will not expand the eligibility zone any further. We encourage interested teams in other states to host additional versions of this event for their own regions.

Fees:

*The cost is $15 per team, which will cover our mirror fee for the question set. There are no discounts available. We expect that essentially every participating school will send at least 1 staffer per team since clubs will have a great deal of ineligible players for this event. This is a Mid-Atlantic community effort to include and retain new players, not a fundraiser for VCU, and we will rely on everyone's cooperation to make it work. Fees should be paid by Venmo, Zelle, or mailed paper check. Contact info for each payment method will be provided to registered teams.

All participants in the tournament are expected to be familiar with the code of conduct designed to provide a safe and inclusive environment at Quizbowl at VCU events and comply with the anti-cheating policy including having a video signal set up while participating in rounds.

Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

After a 5 game schedule, there were two undefeated teams remaining at this tournament, so we played a 1-game final in which George Washington A defeated William & Mary.
