17 April 2021 - SMH2 Mid-Atlantic & Southeast Combined Mirror

Post by db0wman »

Overview
This is an announcement for the Mid-Atlantic & Southeast collegiate site of SMH2, which will take place on April 17th, 2021. This tournament will cost $70 per team, with discounts outlined below. I, Dylan Bowman, will be directing this tournament through Discord. I can be contacted at [email protected].

Registration Information and Discounts
The registration form for this tournament can be found here.

Payment for this tournament will be exclusively over Venmo or check; further information concerning payment will be available upon registration. If this is an issue, mention that in the form and we can work something out.

The base entry fee is $70. The following discounts are available for teams to claim:

-$20 for a shorthanded team of 1 or 2 players
-$20 if the university has not fielded a team at a tournament since August 1, 2019

Staffing
To sign up to staff for this tournament, fill out this form. Staffers will be paid $40 for 9 rounds of moderating.

Set
Information about the set’s difficulty and distribution can be found here. This tournament will be run on packets 11-20 of the Southeast-Midwest Housewrite. This means that players who participated in the initial set of mirrors on packets 1-10 will have an advantage over those who did not.

Eligibility
This tournament is exclusive to college teams; middle school and high school players may not play or moderate for this tournament. There will be no formal restrictions on strong players but we encourage any players who believe it would be inappropriate for them to play this mirror to instead play the open mirror of SMH2 on May 1.

The region for which this mirror is planned can be viewed below. The west mirror will again include universities from British Columbia. We encourage teams to contact us if they wish to attend a mirror in another region.

Misconduct
This tournament will not tolerate misconduct such as, but not limited to: racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, verbal harassment of players or staff, and generally inappropriate comments. A link to the misconduct form as well as the IKEA Code of Conduct, to which we’ll be adhering, will be available and visible on the server.

Cheating
Cheating will not be tolerated at this tournament. Video will be required for all players; if this is not an option please let us know beforehand via email or Discord. We reserve the right to remove anyone whom we believe to be cheating from the tournament. Our protocol for dealing with cheaters can also be found on the Code of Conduct linked above.

A few questions/observations here:

Why is this a combined Southeast/Mid-Atlantic mirror when the first mirror of this set got a full field just in the Southeast (not sure about the size of the Mid-Atlantic field)?

While I doubt there’s much overlap between players that want to play this and the COOT mirror on the same day, I imagine that COOT mirror and this will require plenty of staff, especially if this tournament attempts to expand (which I hope will happen given that a massive portion of the country is eligible to play in this mirror!).

This was the day most preferred by the Mid-Atlantic teams (we got little response from southeast teams for our date poll) and we don't currently have the resources to host two mirrors. If teams wish to play another site because of a date conflict, they are more than welcome to do so. We may also hold an overflow mirror if necessary.

I've lowered the field cap to 12. It will increase according to staffer availability. Staffers can register here; pay for the day is $40!

The field has expanded to 14, which will be the final cap barring any unforeseen circumstances. Teams should expect an email containing tournament information within 24 hours of this post.
