ANNOUNCEMENT: 2022 WORKSHOP

Post by Santa Claus »

I am very pleased to announce that WORKSHOP will be returning in Spring 2022.

This iteration of the set will expand on the work done in WORKSHOP 2021 and WORKSHOP 2020 and aims to once again provide a high-quality set at 3 dots on the college quiz bowl calendar’s difficulty scale. For an idea of the difficulty, please consult the questions of 2021 WORKSHOP (either in the discussion forum or on the archive, once it is clear) and recent iterations of ACF Regionals. Our goal is to provide an avenue for newer writers to get experience with writing questions at regular-difficulty and receive detailed feedback on their work, and to provide quiz bowlers with an opportunity to receive similar experience working on the administration, logistics, and finance of running a set.

We have continued to learn from the previous iterations on the set and build on feedback from the whole team and hope that we'll be able to provide an even better experience for everyone.

The Team
Head Editors: Jordan Brownstein, Olivia Murton, Kevin Wang
Logistics: Will Grossman
Literature: Caroline Mao
History: Chris Sims, Nick Jensen, Michael Kearney
Science: Adam Fine (physics, bio), Kevin Wang (chem, other)
Arts: Wonyoung Jang (auditory and other fine arts), Athena Kern (visual fine arts)
RMPSS: Athena Kern (religion), Kevin Wang (myth/legends), Jordan Brownstein (philosophy, social science), Chris Sims (econ)
Other Academic: Chris Sims

The Set
14 packets plus tiebreakers
Length caps: 7 line tossups (before powermark), 8 line bonuses (not including answerlines)
Mirror fee: $50 per team; $12.50 a person for individual events.

Distribution
4/4 Literature: American, British, European, World
4/4 History: American, European, World, Ancient/Archaeology/Other
4/4 Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Other
3/3 Arts: visual, audio, other
1/1 “Legends” including at least .5/.5 traditional “religion”
1/1 Philosophy
.5/.5 Other Religion
1.5/1.5 Social Science
1/1 Other (roughly two-thirds geography and current events)

Payment Structure
We will set aside 25% of all proceeds for set-wide work: dealing with mirrors, keeping track of payments, billing hosts, proofreading, packetizing, wrangling writers (enforcing deadlines) etc.

For questions, we'll be using a slightly modified version of the “points system” from previous years:
5 points given out per tossup, 4 points per bonus.
3 points to the writer for writing a tossup, 2 points for a bonus.
The remaining points will go to the editor of that question.

The 75% of non-set-wide revenue will then be divided up based exclusively on the percentage of total points a writer or editor receives.

Based off compensation from the 2021 iteration of the set, we project that writers will receive roughly $4 per tossup and $2.75 per bonus.

Planned Timeline
We anticipate having all question-writing done by January, and the set completed by early February.

Applications for writers are now open: https://forms.gle/dxYQH7druVPVqcpTA. Please note that we will not be accepting high school students as writers this year.

The application will close on 6/4 6/18 6/25.

The WORKSHOP team is holding an open call for a second history editor. For more information about the applications, please see our post about it.

EDIT: We have selected Nick Jensen as our second history editor. Thank you to all who applied - we hope to have the opportunity to work with you on future projects.

EDIT: We have additionally selected Michael Kearney as our third history editor. Turns out the opportunity was sooner than we anticipated.

EDIT: The application deadline has been extended two weeks. Get your applications in now!

EDIT: The application deadline has again been extended, this time by another week. While this will likely be the last extension, I can tentatively announce that we are considering doing a period of rolling applications after the primary deadline has passed if necessary. We would greatly prefer if everyone who was interested in participating in the project submitted their application before then, though.

WORKSHOP 2022 is still seeking hosts for the following regions:
Pacific Northwest
Southern California
Northern California
United Kingdom

We have tentative, but not yet confirmed, hosts in place for the following regions:

We have confirmed interest in and ability to host from the following hosts/regions (dates still TBD unless otherwise noted, and these mirrors will be considered finalized once we have those dates from host schools):
Texas: UT-Austin
Northeast: Yale (3/12)
North: Iowa (2/26)
Midwest: UIUC
Eastern Canada: Toronto
Southeast: Georgia Tech (3/5)
Florida: UF (2/26)
Mid-Atlantic: VCU (4/30)

As of now, WORKSHOP is permitting host schools to host their mirrors either in-person or online, pursuant to state and local guidelines on large indoor events. The regions may need to be adjusted depending on the amount of online and in-person mirrors we secure. We are also reserving spots in our to-be-announced online playtesting mirror for host schools, so the host school’s team will be able to play the set if they are interested in doing so. If you are interested in hosting a regional mirror of WORKSHOP in any of the areas we still need hosts in, or if you have any questions, please email [email protected]

Additionally, if your school is listed here but you can no longer host, or if you have questions about the geographic boundaries of these regions, please reach out.

Best,

WORKSHOP Logistics
