10 July 2021 - SuMO VI: The Rise of Franklin (in person, Greeneville TN)

Post by TusculumPearson »

This is the formal announcement of and invitation of registrations for SuMO VI: The Rise of Franklin.

We’re pleased to return the mixed partnerships game to East Tennessee, on the campus of Tusculum University in Greeneville (the one-time capital of the State of Franklin, hence the name) and return in-person quizbowl to the Mid-South.

Details below, or you can just go ahead and bypass the details and sign your partnership up.
https://forms.gle/DTLQqRWmeqUgnrPJ8

FORMAT
You register as a partnership of two, not as a team of four. On the morning of the tournament, you and your teammate will be paired with another partnership, roughly based on your experience and skill level. You will play the tournament with that other partnership, two partnerships paired as a four-player team. We do this to try to build the most evenly-paired field possible; we want every game to be as competitive as possible.

We’ll establish a schedule when it’s clear how many partnerships will register; in the past, we’ve been able to guarantee nine games before playoffs.

SET
SuMO VI is a mirror of STASH, the nationals-level set from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.

FEE
The registration fee is $50 per partnership. If at all possible, we need the registration fee in cash, because…

PRIZES
…SuMO remains a cash game, and the prizes for the top teams are cash. There’s roughly a 50/30/20 split of the tournament prize pool among the top three teams. Again, the final prize pool will be established when we get picture of the field.

The initial field cap is 20 partnerships. We can expand the field with additional readers and staff.

TRASH
There is a Sunday trash game to serve as a counterpart to the Saturday academic game! Find out more.

COVID-19
CDC guidance or no CDC guidance, there is still concern about the pandemic, and you should be aware that Tusculum University is still under a ruleset associated with the reopening of the campus under COVID. While that ruleset might be formally relaxed before July, as of right now that ruleset still asks us to make sure everybody is masked and everybody signs a waiver as they come onto campus. The current edition of the “Pioneer Pathway” ruleset is at this website, and your’e most interested in Pages 14 and 15:
https://tuemail.s3.amazonaws.com/Tuscul ... l+2021.pdf

STAFF, BUZZERS
We benefit from the good quizbowl community in this region to help make this tournament work! We historically haven’t given a staff or buzzer discount for the tournament to keep the division of the funds clean, but we do want the best staff possible, and we’re hopeful that there are a fleet of you who have just missed reading or logistics-wrangling (like I have).
We’ve got a short registration for staffers to make sure you’re placed where you need to be: https://forms.gle/4P41ek3R4WZkgwGq7.

CONTACT
All questions and concerns should be shuttled through the East Tennessee Quizbowl email address ([email protected]). Your tournament director and lead reader on the day will be Dren Rollins; logistics director and stats-book wrangler will be Chuck Pearson.

REGISTER NOW
https://forms.gle/DTLQqRWmeqUgnrPJ8

DISCLAIMERS
Some information is subject to change; if changes occur, they will be posted on this thread.

And, as always, in the words of the genial quizmaster, all decisions of the tournament director are arbitrary, capricious, and final.

Come join us as we reunite in Greeneville on July 10th.

We're delighted to announce that SuMO will be mirroring STASH, TJHSST's HS-nationals level set. Further information on STASH can be found in the set's mirror thread.

Thanks so much to TJ for use of the set!

We'll open up registration directly.

It's been a second since I bumped. Field-as-partnerships accurate as of June 16th. 12 partnerships means a tournament of six teams, and more interest is still being expressed.

Y'all come.

What time will this actually start? I may fly down either the morning of or the day before to staff.

Depends on the field, but right now I’d expect the building to be open by 8:30 AM.

(You’ve got email, by the way.)

Oh, and since I’m handling business…bump for field update on June 21.

Bump for field update for June 26th. Soft cap is going by the wayside for now; we've got staffer interest. I'm nervous, but it's a good sort of nervous.

Will this tournament be run on a NAQT ruleset, or PACE, as the creators of STASH recommend?

Hopefully 5 seconds to answer after you've buzzed, but not bounceback bonuses. I'm sure everyone wants to get some sleep

Bump to answer some questions, provide some local knowledge, and promote the field update!

Yeah, that's a thing wrote: Fri Jul 02, 2021 2:55 pm Hopefully 5 seconds to answer after you've buzzed, but not bounceback bonuses. I'm sure everyone wants to get some sleep
RULESET
NAQT scoring and format; 15-10-(-5). I'd feel more obligation to the STASH writers' intent if I felt like I had players here preparing for PACE NSC in the near term. As it stands I feel much more obligation to the readers and scorekeepers; the readers largely don't deal with bounceback bonuses in the competitions they run (and they sure don't deal with the practices of correcting fairly when a bounceback goes wrong), and the scorekeepers aren't used to 20-point bonuses.

PACE timing; five seconds, five seconds, five seconds, God bless simplicity.

PACE tiebreakers for ties after preliminaries. I'll write this up more completely next week, but we'll play off ties for the top n places in each group, where n is the number of teams advancing to the playoff round. (Right now that looks like n = 3, but it could be n = 2.)

Further updates as the field solidifies and we set the format for the groups.

LODGING
If you haven't made reservations yet (or if the reservations are cancelable), there are special SuMO rates at a couple of lodging options in town.

Our group rate at the Hampton Inn Greeneville (423-638-3735) is $119 per night before tax.
Our group rate at the Econolodge Greeneville (423-639-4185) is $67.99 per night before tax if those reservations are made by Wednesday.

For both lodging options, specifically say that you’re coming for SuMO when you make your reservation.

There is at least one person who was interested in the Hampton if they could split a room with someone. There is business running in the Summer Southern QB League group on Facebook if you need to try to seek out a roommate as well.

SATURDAY NIGHT BASEBALL
Since many folk are in town for the weekend, we're seeking out entertainment options. And the Greeneville Flyboys share a stadium with the Tusculum baseball team, and it’s RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the Meen Center. (These are the benefits of small-campus life!) We’re contemplating a group to go see the Appalachian League game against the (checks notes) Danville Otterbots (don’t even ask) on Saturday night, after the academic games.

There are two group deals - the $10 deal gets us tickets up front and a hot dog/chips/drink voucher (standard, boring), and the $20 deal gets us tickets in the picnic area and a catered meal from Fatz Cafe (which will likely be chicken-heavy and VERY good).

Interested? Send an email or direct message back and tell me which one you’re interested in, and we’ll set a thing up!

MORE UPDATES TO COME
We're one week away and this is when I start getting particular. Watch this space for more updates!

Week-of updates for both days' worth of SuMO:

COVID-19
We have gotten word of an update to our local COVID-19 protocols, and they are mask-optional for vaccinated individuals. We still are asking unvaccinated individuals to be masked when they are indoors. The institution is also still asking all attendees to sign a waiver holding Tusculum University free from liability for individual participation in the events of the weekend. (We’ll share the text of the waiver as soon as possible.)

There is obvious nationwide concern over the Delta variant of the virus. The local virus dashboards, however, show limited transmission of the virus in East Tennessee, and low positivity rates. The risk is going to come largely from people traveling from afar and the presence of virus in their regions. Keep this in mind as you make your decisions for the weekend.

But also keep in mind that an in-person event ran in Commerce, Georgia two weekends ago, with no word of ill effects. This will be a larger event, but precedents are being established and we’re optimistic that we’ll have a positive weekend.

PARKING
On both tournament days, we expect the building to be open and available for us from 800 AM. Our mass meeting room will be Meen Center 007. Google Maps responds well to a mapping of 35 Shiloh Road, Greeneville for the location of the parking lot you should be aiming for to place yourself in the proximity of the Meen Center; you might fare well also searching for Pioneer Park, the baseball stadium next door to the Meen Center.

The Meen Center is surrounded by parking on the west and south sides. Signs will direct you to the primary ground floor entrance, although the secondary entrance will put you directly in 007.

SCHEDULE AND REGISTRATION
We will be registering teams between 815 and 900 AM, and we will plan for our general meeting and draft of teams at 900 AM, with first games at 930 AM. Please plan to be present by 900 AM. Please remember to bring cash to register; SuMO is a cash game, and prize money is more easily divided when we have funds in cash.

Current schedule models for SuMO Academic plan five rounds before lunch with lunch break roughly at 1200-1230 PM and ten rounds (not counting group tiebreakers if necessary) of gameplay overall. We have sufficient packets for a full advantaged final if one team doesn’t manage to clear the field by two games.

We expect a full schedule release and tournament structure by Thursday.

WELCOME
As the founders of East Tennessee Quiz Bowl, we have always believed that the sport of Quiz Bowl is all inclusive. We welcome competitors of all races, religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities. On July 1, 2021, a state law went into effect which directly targets members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially those who are Trans.

The law requires businesses and government facilities open to the public to post a sign if they let transgender people use multi-person bathrooms, locker rooms or changing rooms associated with their gender identity. In our opinion, it is a gross violation of personal liberties and a massive overreach by a governmental body whose majority is determined to stigmatize a portion of society of which they have an irrational fear and hatred.

We want to be unambiguous. Regardless of any penalties (ironically there are none), we will not support institutionalized hate. We want to know if anyone who attends our competitions feels that they are unwelcome or unwanted. Having both been raised Protestant, the founders of ETQB were always taught that, “...There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28)

All are welcome. We are one. We are East Tennessee Quiz Bowl.

I have eaten, watched baseball, slept, and recovered and I’m ready for a day of trash.

But first, some congratulations and appreciation.

Team 3 (Tracy Mirkin, Anthony Delgado, Jonce Culbertson, and Joey Simmons) ran the field undefeated at 9-0 and claimed the top prize at SuMO VI. Tracy Mirkin was the top scorer of the tournament, on a boggling 158.3 PPG.

Team 4 (Sharath Narayan, Jonathan Caldwell, Sydney Vaughn, and Connor Ketron) finished 2nd at 8-1. Team 12 (Chandler West, Sarah Mueller, Nat Sadler, Morgan Keen) were 3rd at 6-3.

We ran a tournament with ten rounds plus a stadium tiebreak (with Teams 10 - Sam Matson, Eli Apple, Luke Quesenberry, and Spencer Brown - and Team 11 - Eric Chang, Thomas Davidson, Chandler Bowman, and Cameron Church - putting on a show for the masses) at a PACE NSC level and we were all standing upright at the end of it.

I’m beyond grateful to an expert staff for their work. Of course, ETQB doesn’t work without Dren Rollins being everything Dren is, and this tournament worked so well because of his vision to move the SuMO event to Tusculum. Robin Richards ran the machinery in HQ so I could read live games for the first time in two years. The readers, both local and regional, made the tournament run so smoothly - Dren Rollins, Sarah Mauldin, Carey Wilson, Oishee Shemontee, Nick Karas, Erskine Thompson, Zach Knecht, Chris Hale, and Sarah Whisenhunt. Thanks to Annemarie Brown for scorekeeping for the first time at a tournament, thanks to Allison Keen for being the most faithful, and thanks to Kallie Berry and Andrew Helton for taking the house team lumps to make our field even (and to Kallie again for a late scorekeeping assist!).

And - I am editing to add, and how can I forget! - thanks to the Father of SuMO, Mitch Alday, for starting this little tournament in Bainbridge that we’re happy to carry on in East Tennessee.

And here in a little while we’ll do it all again, trashy style.

Further updates will now be remanded to the trash tournament’s thread.
