ACF Winter Lower Midwest at Missouri S&T (1/17/09)

Post by Deckard Cain » Thu Nov 13, 2008 11:32 pm

I am pleased to announce that Missouri S&T will host the Lower Midwest site of the inaugural ACF Winter tournament on January 17, 2009.

Questions:
ACF Winter is a packet-submission tournament, and is intended as a regular-difficulty event, with questions slightly harder than those at ACF Fall but comparable to Penn Bowl 2007 or 2008. Per the ACF packet submission guidelines located at http://www.acf-quizbowl.com/documents/packetsub.php, "any team with at least one person on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2007 is required to submit a packet in order to participate in an ACF tournament in 2008-2009. All ACF tournaments, NAQT Division I or Division II SCT, NAQT ICT, and typical academic invitationals count as regular collegiate academic tournaments for this purpose, but trash or 'hybrid' tournaments, College Bowl/HCASC, and tournaments played on NAQT 'invitational series' questions do not."

For teams required to submit packets, please refer to the guidelines above, and submit your packets according to the following schedule:
Packet submitted by Nov. 15: -$50
Packet submitted by Nov. 29: -$25 (-$50 for optional packets)
Packet submitted by Dec. 13: No penalty (-$25 for optional packets)
Packet submitted by Dec. 20: +$25
Packet submitted by Jan. 4: +$50
No packet submitted by Jan. 4: Dropped from tournament, unless prior arrangements have been made.

Fees:
Base fee: $120 per team
Buzzer systems: -$5 each
Staffers: -$10 each
Laptop: -$5 each (max 1 per team)
Travel: -$10 for every 200 miles traveled (one-way)
International: -$20
Teams new to ACF: -$25
Teams new to quizbowl: -$75
High school teams: -$50

Registration:
To register for the tournament or if you have any questions, email me at mwchadbourne at gmail dot com.

Truman State will almost certainly bring at least 2 teams to this.

Mizzou has at least 3 people coming, so right now we should be good for 1 team.

The field for ACF Winter Lower Midwest currently looks like:

Missouri (1)
Missouri State (2-3)
Truman State (2)
Missouri S&T (probably 1, as needed)

I've also heard some scattered interest from several other teams. Also, it looks like we will be hosting a mirror of the Penn Bowl trash tournament on Sunday, so let me know whether you'd be interested in that.

Final (hopefully) field update:

Missouri 1
Missouri S&T 1
Missouri State 1
Truman State 2
Washington University 2

Double round-robin followed by appropriate ACF-style playoffs if necessary.

Missouri State defeated Mizzou 170-165 in a single-game final to win ACF Winter Lower Midwest. Mizzou claimed the undergraduate and Division II championships; second place UG team was WUSTL A, second place DII team was WUSTL B.

Stats are up at http://web.mst.edu/~cbowl/hosting/0809/ ... dings.html. Thanks to everyone for coming and to the writers and editors for their hard work.
