Official Announcement Sun 'n' Fun X -July 11th, 2009 @ VCC

Post by SnookerUSF » Thu Jun 25, 2009 8:48 pm

Sun 'n' Fun X: A Decade Under the Influence will be held on the West Campus of Valencia Community College on Saturday July 11th, 2009.

Campus Map:
http://www.valenciacc.edu/AboutUs/locat ... campus.cfm
Tournament HQ and Game Rooms will be in Building 9.

Time:
Please arrive no later than 9am, with an optimistic start time of 9:30am.

Fees:
Base Fee: $120

Discounts:
Buzzer: -$10 (up to 2)
Add. Teams: -$10 (unlimited)

Format:
It will depend on the number of teams that arrive, but expect no fewer than 10 rounds of match play, plus some additional yet to be determined playoffs.

Questions:
Expect Questions to be in the range of Nationals level, my sense is that they will be a tic easier than this year's Missouri Open, they will be of standard mACF distribution 20/20 un-timed tossups and bonuses, there will be NO powers and all bonuses are 30 points.

Side Event:
Depending on interest and timing, we will possibly run the Tyrone Slothrop Literature Singles or Doubles written by Tommy Casalaspi.

Current Registration:
If you do not see your team on this list, please contact me at aragab at mail dot usf dot edu.

USC
Evan Nagler and Bruce Arthur
Seth K. and Chris Chiego
Billy et al.
Borglum
Valencia
Chipola (2)
Hardee High School (2)
Craig et. al

Any questions or concerns, or to register can be sent to aragab at mail dot usf dot edu.

I'm not sure if Ahmad has finalized any plans for the lit side event. I haven't booked any rooms for it at Valencia, but I'm sure we could rustle up a couple if enough people want to do it.

My plan was to do it after the tournament proper, will need a separate reservation for that?

Ahmad, I would like to volunteer my reading services during my bye round ahead of time, if needed of course. I am the tall fat guy on Chipola's team, just let me know if you need me.

I just got back from this.

FSU cleared the field. There was a three-team tie for second place between Borglum/Kendall, Nagler/Arthur, and USC.

Top three scorers were Billy Beyer, Bruce Arthur, and Seth Kendall, in that order.

Questions were exactly as expected and well-received.

Things I got from Sun N Fun X: A Decade Under the Influence:

1. Good readers in every room.
2. Very hard questions.
3. Evan Nagler is tall.
4. Seth Kendall does not like random bouncing light covers (I would like to apologize for my idiotic teammate.)
5. Billy Beyer, Seth Kendall, Evan Nagler, and Bruce Arthur are all very good.

As an editorial note, it should be pointed out that Chris had had to leave before the last two rounds to take care of his daughter, so I played this team solo. Had Borglum been there, this sentence probably would have read "5. Billy Beyer, Chris Borglum, Evan Nagler, and Bruce Arthur are all very good", which is quite true.

Mr. Hewett is already properly awed by my dinosaurishness; presumably this is why he didn't mention me. But thanks, fellow dinosaur. And props to you, Evan, and Bruce for coming so far to add some juice to our site.

Yes, I knew someone was going to note that I left you off, but I was already well aware of your prowess. I was in attendance of the 2009 FCCAA State Championship Coaches Game, where you managed to correctly answer 99 of 100 questions lol. Billy had awed me at Missouri Open, but this simply reiterated the point.

Nice questions, Ahmad. Was there a 20 line limit on TUs?

Just kidding -- they were quite well-written, but I guess I have been out of QB for awhile, because I only knew about half of those even after the "giveaway." Makes me wonder if I am forgetting more stuff from college (I don't think so), or the canon is continuing to expand at an exponential rate. Not trying to spawn yet another canon discussion...just wondering.

Congrats to Billy, et al. Great job!

I think that it is safe to say that Sun 'n Fun 2009 was in no way a typical college tournament. This is certainly not a tournament to look at if one wants to get a good idea about what is in the canon.

Anyway, I had fun at the tournament and found many of the questions well-written and interesting. Congrats to FSU for winning it.
