Where are You Going Next Year (Collegiate 2018)

Post by 1992 in spaceflight »

To quote myself from last year:
it's that time of year again where people start to hear back from transfer applications, grad school apps, job offers, landlords, etc. and make plans to go places. Here is a thread in which current college players or members of the college quizbowl community can post where they'll be next. Please post only if you have something definite to share, though that includes things besides "I am going to x and such school for [Degree]"; more general notes on moving to a new metropolitan area as a non-student/non-player/employee interested in continuing to staff or do outreach, etc.

I guess I'll begin by noting that nothing is changing for me...
outside of having a new job, which gives me my weekends available again, which is such a nice change of pace!

I'll be starting a Ph.D. in physics at UCSB in the fall, which barring some unforeseen circumstances (or a sudden desire to finish my Star Wars set) effectively marks the end of my quizbowl career. It's been fun.

I'm not going anywhere per se, but I'll be studying abroad at the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program in the fall, and would like to go to at least one tournament in the UK while I'm there.

It's the end for me as well. I'll be moving to Yale to do an internship at Waterbury Hospital for a year, then to Nashville to start a dermatology residency and post-doc at Vanderbilt. I'll definitely have time to staff and play opens while I'm in Nashville (I hope), so looking forward to showing up to CO and VCUO still.

I'm graduating in June. I'm hoping to spend most of the summer "on sabbatical" as a semi-itinerant ne'er-do-well. Unless something comes completely out of left field with my SO, I'll be doing government work in Chicago after that. I hope to continue staffing and occasionally playing side events (badly), for as long as that's still fun.

Assuming no big surprises, I'll be at Chicago for the next two to (ideally, up to) ten years, and I plan to play the whole time. I'm hoping to transition to my true calling as a fourth-scoring religion/philosophy/jazz/literature-that-I've-read/architecture specialist and quit acting as generalist-by-necessity, but I suppose we'll see.

I will be starting a PhD program for Cell & Development Biology at UT Austin in the fall. I definitely plan on continuing to play while at UT, and I hope to continue writing and editing as well. I look forward to getting to know a new circuit in Texas and the southeast in the fall.

I will be beginning graduate work at Northwestern in the fall. Not sure how much time I'll have to devote to playing, but I'm happy to staff the occasional tournament, at the very least.

I'll be taking the advice of my high school's namesake and going West to Berkeley to pursue a physics PhD. Likely the end of my playing career, but I'd be happy to help staff Bay Area stuff if/when I have the time.

Since there was speculation about this in the pre-ICT discussion, I'm graduating next year instead of this year because I had to spend a significant part of this school year out of the country to handle a family emergency. (In other words, I'll be at WUSTL for one more year as an undergraduate.)

I will be attending William and Mary as a law student starting in the fall. I will likely go on hiatus for at least a year as I flounder my way through education, but may be available to staff events at William and Mary if needed.

I’m headed to the University of Arizona for an MS in medical physics. I may try and see if I can revive the team there, and I’d be happy to staff whatever high school stuff exists there, time permitting.

As person who was born in Arizona (but has not been there since I was six months old), I kind of want to see a team happen there and wish you luck.

I'll be working full-time in Seattle starting this Fall. I'm down to staff things in the area, and I'll probably come down to the bay occasionally to play some open tournaments.

I am now teaching at Southern Crescent Technical College in Thomaston, GA. I certainly plan to stay involved in quiz bowl and would be happy to staff high school and college tournaments in Georgia.

In about a month I'll be moving to Milwaukee to start a new job. I'll do my best to keep playing opens and generally staying involved in quizbowl, and who knows, may even try to get a stronger Wisconsin circuit going?
