2008 Pre-Season Goldfish Championship: 10/15/2008

Post by pblessman »

Last spring, sixty-six teams from across the US competed in the first Goldfish Championship. This year, we will run this type of tournament twice, once as a pre-season warm-up on October 15, and once on April 29 as a pre-Nationals warm-up. In the Goldfish Championships, your team can compete on NAQT questions against teams from all across the nation (and the maybe even the world) without having to leave your school.

All participating teams will be e-mailed a specially written NAQT packet with 30 TU and 24 PLEASE MAKE FUN OF ME BECAUSE I SPEAK NEITHER LATIN NOR ENGLISH, and on October 15 each team will get out their buzzer system and play a match against their favorite goldfish (i.e. NO opponent), moderated by the team coach (hence the tournament name!). The coach records the TU and Bonus scores for each question as well as on which word the team buzzed in and submits this info in Excel format.

The data will be analyzed to come up with two groups of results: The first list will show how many points each team scored against their goldfish on 24 TU/Bon, while the second group of data will show head-to-head scores for all possible permutations of teams. This means that if a hundred teams compete in this tournament, you will be able to see how you stack up against ninety-nine other teams!

The entry fee per team is $10; each school can enter as many teams as they like. The entry fee must be submitted by October 8 via PayPal to Phil Blessman at pblessman [at] yahoo [dot] com, or by snail-mail, payable to "Culver Academies" to Culver Quizbowl, c/o Phil Blessman, 1300 Academy Road, Culver, IN 46511. Please also feel free to write Phil at the same e-mail address if you have any questions! We hope you can all make it!

If October 15 is not a very workable date for my team, would it be possible for us to still participate, but perhaps play the packet on a day earlier? My coach sounds interested in this, but many members of my team aren't available on Wednesdays due to work/classes/sports.

Hmmm... A week early is difficult (if not impossible...). Last time I allowed teams to do it the day before, if they had a conflict. Please e-mail me at pblessman [at] yahoo to make specific arrangements for your team.

If I remember from last year, Bergen already has one team on credit sort of (we paid for three teams but only two competed). Is this correct?

So... would it be alright for James Monroe to do this a day early? I'm not sure if my coach has signed up for this yet, if not we should be registering within the next two days.

And also, is there a field update for this?

Bergen County Academies never got our packet; we had practice and our team prepared to play, and I called and emailed you (although the email may not have gotten through). Please reply to my email address ( gabjoh [the at symbol] bergen.org ) The only real possible solution is for us to do it next Tuesday.

Does that hold true for all NAQT tournaments? I didn't know that. Why would dicussing IS sets affect the HSNCT?

It doesn't affect HSNCT... it affects other tournaments run later in the year on the same question set. I'd imagine that this wouldn't apply to the Goldfish set, but given that some teams (see Bergen above) didn't get their packet, you probably should hold off.

NAQT, like most question providers, uses their product at multiple sites across a broad length of time (usually from whenever it is made available until the end of the school year), so it would be considered inappropriate to publicly discuss those questions until the end of the NAQT year, which is the HSNCT because teams would be able to cheat.

Alrighty... I could post preliminary goldfish results for the goldfish (I've got 51 goldfish scores tallied right now), but I won't at this time (explanation below)... I mean preliminary for two reasons:

1. There might be a scoresheet that I have missed... please check the list below to see whether your school is listed as having turned in scores.

2. Bergen County, at the very minimum, did not receive their packet, and I will try again to get it to them. As they were the head-to-head champs last year, I would feel REALLY bad if they didn't get to compete, so I will extend the deadline for completing this until Tuesday night. If there is anybody else out there who would like to jump on the turn-it-in-late bandwagon (say people on Fall break... Brindlee Mountain, e.g.), please let me know ASAP.

So, I could post scores, but I don't want to affect the way the remaining schools play by letting them know how everybody did... seems to make sense. If Brindlee Mountain and Bergen County know what score they have to beat they might be more or less aggressive.

That being said, here are the teams I have scoresheets for thus far:

Oh, a couple more things:

1. For obvious reasons, please hold off on discussing questions until AFTER Tuesday's modified deadline.
2. I should have goldfish results back to you rather quickly after Tuesday (say on Wednesday) and then head-to-head results should be not to long after that, maybe Thursday or Friday night. Last time it only took me a couple days to post results, but we've had a few hiccups this time...
