HSNCT isn't like the same thing though. You are technically right I guess.

Are you really going to count HSNCT as an Illinois high school tourney, Jonah? REALLY?

It's not like Illinois [IHSA] format, but neither is Earlybird. If you want to say Charlie attended no Illinois high school tournaments, I can see an argument for that, but if you're going to count Earlybird, in my mind you have to count HSNCT.cornfused wrote:Are you really going to count HSNCT as an Illinois high school tourney, Jonah? I would count Earlybird, New Trier Varsity, Ultima, and the NAQT qualifier as Illinois high school tournaments, as they are tournaments run primarily for Illinois high schools. I wouldn't count HSNCT, just as PACE NSC my senior year wasn't really a Michigan HS tournament.jonah wrote:It's not like Illinois [IHSA] format, but neither is Earlybird. Seriously though: I recall the time at New Trier that one of Nick's best friends asked me -- in his presence -- how "my" question company was doing. He was quite irate.

GREAT NEWS, Illinoisans! In a posting dated 9/18/08, The IHSA has decreed,
"[SNIP]A school could meet year round with their students if they wanted and could schedule a contest with another school at anytime.[SNIP]" This surely applies to all activities, right?
And if THIS doesn't bring Tom Egan out to play, I'm out of ideas.

I just talked to Tom today - he's fine, but he's been very busy with work and family issues, so he hasn't had the extra time for hsquizbowl lately. Let's just all root against the Cubs and say something completely nonsensical every once in a while... he'll be back before we know it.
And Coach Price - read that whole Q and A. Right before (as in, directly before what you quoted, it says, "There is not a designated season for bass fishing." Schobowl has a designated season... that's the problem.

Oh, trust me, Greg, I knew exactly where I snipped. I just omitted it to suck people into clicking the link to see the topic was regarding BASS FISHING! If Dr. Egan came back to the board tomorrow, I expect a full-on tirade comparing the hoops that scholastic bowl coaches deal with vs the free and easy world of competiton being designed for bass fishing. I still can't believe that's really going to be a state series.cornfused wrote:I just talked to Tom today - he's fine, but he's been very busy with work and family issues, so he hasn't had the extra time for hsquizbowl lately. Re: Illinois '08-'09
Just to be clear, here are the two limitations on IHSA Scholastic Bowl Teams:
1) You can only compete in 5-on-5 Scholastic Bowl on 18 dates during the regular season, which runs from the beginning of September until the conclusion of the IHSA Tournament in March. The IHSA Tournament does not count towards that limit, and the Masonic Tournament only counts as one date even if you make it to State.
2) You can only compete in 5-on-5 Scholastic Bowl on 1 date outside the regular season.
There are no limitations on practicing during the season or outside the season.
I don't know if any teams are truly constrained by these rules. Most teams just are not that active. For the very elite teams, they generally compete in some tournaments that are not 5-on-5. There may be some sophomores constrained from competing in all their team's Varsity and Frosh/Soph Tournaments, since Frosh/Soph Tournament dates do not count as dates toward the Varsity limit (the Frosh/Soph Teams have their own 18 date limit), but the limitation also states that no individual may compete on 18 dates of 5-on-5 Scholastic Bowl. So, it wouldn't surprise if there are some small number of people who would like to compete for the Varsity on 15 dates and on the Frosh/Soph on 5 dates, but they are not allowed to do it.
I wish there were no limits at all. However, I am not making this a high priority issue because I doubt I could change it and the limits are wide enough to be a minor inconvenience rather than an iron grip.

Tell me how a green but scrappy Barrington High School frosh/soph squad could go about wrangling an invite to a tournament on December 13th. Ideally such a tournament would not be more than 30 miles away. Proximity to a major interstate is a plus. Can anyone help?

UIUC EFT Mirror:
Auburn made the second bracket on a three way tie with us and Ohio State for second place in one of the prelim RR. I don't remember where NT was (third bracket?). From what I could tell the stats were good from the individuals from IL.
Oh yeah, and Auburn beat IN (it was close...). That wasn't supposed to happen.
And in case anyone cares, Indiana lost all our second RR games in the top bracket.

Zahed's Fave Five
1. Meeting Ig again will be both epic and awkward. Soooo many stories...so many...and I feel guilty about my level of involvement in some.
2. Playing in a college bowl tournament was superb. This was my first time as a starter with the varsity A team, and it was sort of a baptism by fire--in a good way. I echo Deesmeister's sentiment that high school teams in college bowl is a cool thing. I enjoyed playing against some teams that were strong, at least compared to us, in a very laid back environment. The tension in some of the Auburn-Wheaton games was incredible, yet the same types of scenarios with the same types of teams gave a more relaxed atmosphere. I have to say that playing against college teams was cool, but playing against a former teammate, along with two other former all-staters, and winning, was simply awesome.
3. The Cubs just got eliminated. As a Cleveland fan who has suffered many a hardship, I express my condolences to those who bleed Cubby blue.
4. This season is gonna be awesome. I can't wait to play against some of the other teams in the state.
5. Bass fishing. Awesome.

Zahed: "College quizbowl," not "college bowl." The first is the generic term for Scholastic Bowl-style competitions in college, while the second is a specific brand of such that is equally likely to be a) completely defunct or b) the Antichrist.
I'd add links, but I'm, um, tired. I finished in 5th/24, Indiana finished one spot below me - so that's two teams composed almost entirely of underclassmen from IL high schools in the top bracket. Not bad.

Re: Illinois '08-'09
I scored about half the tossup points for MS during my senior year - never more. That's not a one-man team, that's a team with a strong player.
NOTE: My teammates worse worse than Ben's this weekend, though - at least Ben's showed up.

I found the stats for Loyola from this weekend:
Player GP 10 -5 TUH Pts
Joe Ahmad 0.0 0 0 0 0
Joe Ahmad's teammates 0.0 0 0 0 0
Ratio of Ben's teammates' points to Joe's teammates' points: inf

If you want to make comparisons to Greg Gauthier's teammates, he had a teammate who qualified for the Scobol Solo Championship Match last year, and all of his teammates played through an entire national tournament. It seems like he may have had stronger teammates last year than Mike Verity did.

Still bitter from sectionals? Haha. I reeeeeeally wanted to go, but we had homecoming issues and I guess you didn't (although storming the field after shutting out #2 St. Rita beat any non-playoff quizbowl match). I am however looking forward to some good matchups between Joe & Co versus Ben & Co this year, as it seems their knowledge base frequently crosses paths. Ultima won't be a good measuring stick, but Earlybird will be.Lime, Self and Society wrote:I found the stats for Loyola from this weekend:

The blows keep flying in! Indeed I should have made a better one man team comparison, as John, Kevin, Jeff, and Sam were all formidable players (especially John, as you referenced). And yes they beat us at least four times last year, none of them being close.Lime, Self and Society wrote:If you want to make comparisons to Greg Gauthier's teammates, he had a teammate who qualified for the Scobol Solo Championship Match last year, and all of his teammates played through an entire national tournament. Re: Illinois '08-'09
Davey & Goliath is a F/S tournament, and it looks we'll be using NAQT IS-78A tossups with in-house written bonuses (IHSA format). As it is a frosh/soph only tournament, the whole "top 15% to HSNCT" memo does not apply here (as far as I know).BGSO wrote:NAQT lists the Loyola invitational as a qualifying tournament
Do not get this confused with the Ultima, which is a varsity tournament at Loyola the Saturday after next (field finalized).

What Cap'n Jack said.
I have you guys down as one of teams for the Ultima, but it is a "pre-tryout" for Team Illinois, and thus a sort-of qualifier for (the competition formerly known as) Panasonnic. It is NOT a qualifier for NAQT.

I know Ultima isn't a qualifier for NAQT, I was more confused how a Fr/So tourney was a NAQT qualifier.

Our f/s isn't an NAQT qualifier...if NAQT says it is, then we got problems

Being a frosh/soph tournament doesn't necessarily keep it from being an HSNCT qualifier. See the NAQT rules that allow tournaments to place restrictions on the field, including for experience.

Yes, I'm aware, but having a f/s team qualify for NAQT is like a guppy vs. a shark!

Have you listened to the audio from NT vs. State College A from the 2007 HSNCT? It might sound a lot like that. That audio is good for some amusement either way, especially if you enjoy laughing at Nick.
