Earlybird Tournament at University of Illinois (10/25/08)

Post by millionwaves »

This is the official announcement for the Earlybird Tournament, which will be held at the University of Illinois on Saturday, October 25, 2008. This tournament will use house written questions produced collaboratively between the Minnesota, Brown, and Illinois college teams. To register or ask questions, please e-mail James Sanner at [email protected].

QUESTIONS:

As stated above, Earlybird will use pyramidal questions arranged in 20/20 tossup/bonus rounds. They are being written by Minnesota, Illinois, and Brown. The questions will follow a modified ACF subject distribution; functionally, this means that Illinois teams can expect to see much less math than they're used to, in addition to a complete lack of Industrial Arts, Driver's Education, and other questions in that vain.

FORMAT:

The Earlybird tournament will use its traditional format, which is something of a blend of IHSA and ACF. This means that teams will consist of four players. Bonuses will be read one part at a time, after which the team that correctly answered the tossup will have a chance to answer. If that team fails to answer it correctly, the other team will be allowed to give an answer, after which the next bonus part will be read. The tournament will attempt to use the fairest possible preliminary and afternoon formats.

WHO WE'RE TRYING TO ATTRACT:

The University of Illinois ABT is pleased to invite all interested teams from any state to attend this tournament. In the past, we've attracted teams from Indiana, Michigan, and Missouri; we hope those teams will return and bring other teams with them. We're also interested in receiving second, third, fourth, and nth teams from the same school.

COST:

The base registration fee is $65. Teams may receive a $5 discount for each working buzzer set they bring up to $10, for a minimum registration fee of $55 per team. Schools that bring multiple teams may receive a discount for subsequent teams at the discretion of the Tournament Director.

REGISTRATION:

If you're interested in registration, please e-mail Tournament Director James Sanner at [email protected].

We hope to see many of you in October!

Loyola has 3 teams, and Auburn and New Trier at least one...who are the other four? Inquiring minds want to know!

We're currently scheduled for two teams, so that leaves three unknowns.

Bettendorf will be fielding one team. We were, however, registered after the "nine teams" post.

It's too bad that none of the out-of-state powerhouses are going to be there, but it is pretty awesome that Bettendorf is making the trip.

FINAL FIELD:

Auburn 2 confirmed
New Trier 1 confirmed
Loyola 3 confirmed
Springfield 1 confirmed
Rolling Meadows 1 confirmed
IMSA 1 confirmed
Carbondale 2 confirmed
Bettendorf 1 confirmed
Crete/Monee 2 confirmed
Cumberland 1 confirmed
St. Ignatius 1 confirmed [edit: my mistake; I accidentally omitted this]

That makes 16 teams, which is just about perfect. I'll have a real schedule put together ASAP.

We will be playing in this format:

Two brackets of 8

Finals
Four brackets of 4

Individual scorers will receive books, and trophies will be mailed to the winners as I have been informed they will not be ready on time.

After round 5:

That Ben guy from New Trier can get some tossups.

New Trier, Auburn and Loyola are averaging over 500 PPG, while New Trier, Auburn, and Carbondale have each topped 600.

Auburn, New Trier, and Loyola are undefeated. Auburn beat Carbondale 345-315, and New Trier has yet to face Loyola.

For those who want instant gratification, the top RR went like so:

1. New Trier (3-0)
2. Auburn (2-1)
3. Carbondale (1-2)
4. Loyola (0-3)

Are we allowed to discuss this set?

Thanks to Illinois for running a solid tournament and HSAPQ for a very good question set. We weren't planning on playing any other tournaments on HSAPQ this year, but we will look into whether we reasonably can. The competition was strong and was especially close among the top four teams.

If anybody wants to make specific comments on questions, I would recommend sending an email to HSAPQ now and then posting it somewhere on this board at a later date. It's a new company, and they probably would appreciate feedback. Emails should be sent to tedgioia @ starpower.net

Excellent pyramidal questions overall, they allowed excellent matches.

One comment though and perhaps something to improve on is the quality of the moderating, specifically with pronounciation of words (LA DA DEE DEAAAAAAAAAAAA) which hurts especially when reading quickly. Another comment from a friend was that the question describing characters in the NFL GENERIC sounded like AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGG names. It was just unpleasant on that type of question which required some knowledge of prounciation.

For a while, I was stunned at the amazing P/B's of both Rockford Auburn and Carbondale, but upon further investigation, it appears each team received 10 pts more than they should have on two different occasions. I mean, Siva is a pretty cool guy, but 39.09 ppb in one round is a little bit of a stretch. Its so easy to make mistakes when you're entering hundreds of numbers into a computer.

Since SQBS pops up an error message whenever a team apparently has over 30 ppb, I make sure the numbers are accurate.
