I kind of already talked about this in the last thread but here is the text of it:
Well, our last tournament was quite a while back, so I thought I would reflect real quick.

Final Rankings
1. South Fork
2. Pensacola
3. Ransom Everglades
4. Rickards
5. Florida High
6. Chiles
7. Hardee
8. Eastside
9. Lincoln
10. Like anyone, mostly because I've started to forget who is good, and I have a rather norflor skew.

South Fork: I am very impressed by Tom's improvement from UF Winter to UF Spring. That is a large basis for this high ranking, because it is more holistic than most rankings. I mean, they absolutely destroyed us at UF Spring. While we were shorthanded, and it was NAQT, I don't really take that lightly, because there wasn't any way it was going to be close. They also played pretty conservative at CAC and managed to pull a nice win out. They're pretty much done after this year though.

Pensacola: I am never disappointed with a team that Mr. Robinson produces. Zach and Travis have not sucked this year, but I don't think they are as strong without the epic Hansol. Great mastery of stock clues. I didn't really feel like they improved as the year went on. They have a nice JV player whose name I don't really remember, but he was pretty decent. Played great at the FSU tournament.

Ransom Everglades: While they did pull of what I thought was an improbable NAQT win, I was not impressed overall with this team. They strongly benefit from the heavy geography distro in NAQT. I would love to see them on a house written tournament, in order to get a stronger judgement of them. We played them pretty close at UF Spring, which is laughable considering how terribly we were playing. They have another year of dominance left if Jesse is still there, and they only go to UF Spring.

Rickards: The team dynamic changed alot this year, as our best player basically stopped caring after December. I improved as the year went on, as did our literature girl, who I think will dominate on the Rickards team next year. I think I improved from FSU to UF Winter, despite the drop in PPG from 62 to 35. At FSU, I didn't have the aforementioned best player and literature girl, but the incredible FA distro at UF definitely contributed to how well Rickards did. From UF Winter to UF Spring, not really much improvement. There was a ton of negging at UF Spring that kind of sucked/took my questions. Also, I suck when there isn't really a RMP/FA distro... and when there is a 17/17 geography distro. At FSU spring, against a weak field, me and our lit girl, Emily, put up 96 ppg together on an NAQT set.

Florida High: Matt is never a surprise, though I'm worried that he is going after too much of a breadth of knowledge, rather than depth of knowledge. His depth of knowledge could get to be an issue if he continues to play in college.

Chiles: Always a surprise. Jeremy kept that team together. Improbable upsets on a number of occasions. They play to the level of their opponent, which gets to be an issue, but is also why they're a surprise.

Hardee: Fun kids. Zakk is pretty good.

Eastside: Their best player never showed up. Josie is pretty cool?

Lincoln: They'll be competent with a generalist and a science/euro specialist.

Meh. I don't care enough about the rest of the teams.
In addition:

Matt is going to be pretty damn good.
I will be surprised if the Rickards team was better than the mediocre team this year.

Predictions:
1. Ransom Everglades
2. Florida High
3. Rickards
4. Pensacola
5. Montverde
6. Lincoln
7. Chiles
8. Eastside

I wouldn't count Pensacola out of it too early. Although we did lose Travis and Zach, we have Josh, David, Spencer, and me on varsity. We're all very balanced with no one person being a lot better than the other which will help us beat one man teams (i.e. Florida), and the holes left by the seniors graduating are being filled quite well. We should be able to avoid the costly mistake made last year with our seniors never showing up to practice which made us less competitive (see our decline from 1st place in FSU to 3rd in UF winter to 4th in UF Spring). Also, is Matt really coming back for Florida High?

I think you underestimate how good Matt is, but thats to be expected. On a house-written tournament, I fully expect him to break 120 ppg, and average 20 ppb. Even on NAQT, he'll probably get like 100ppg and 20 ppb.

I think you should be a little more offended at me ranking Rickards higher than Pensacola. That is perhaps because I only saw you and David(?) play at the FSU Fall tournament. In the round which I played you guys, I was the only A team member present, and I let the reins go after about question 11, allowing David to get several more questions and still win pretty comfortably.

I don't really know who Josh is, so perhaps that will influence what I'm thinking. I still think that as long as the Rickards team still exists in a competitive fashion, they'll be pretty well balanced and good. I don't really see them having any weaknesses except probably geography. They were the first class where I had them specialize in their topics, so I'm kind of expecting them to do alright.

I see the Rickards team basically having a scoring distribution like so:
Jew girl: 55 ppg
Black guy 1: 25 ppg (more if there is computational math)
White supremacist: 20 ppg
Black guy 2: 15 ppg

While averaging around 19-20 ppb. Either way, I'm not seeing either of these teams vying for 1st in the state. I guess we will see what is up at the FSU tournament on Nov. 1.

Yo. I'm Matt from Ransom and our team is not losing anyone to graduation, so we are all back. We're working hard to diversify our knowledge; let's see if we can't have some good matches this year.
I can't wait to see you guys compete in the tournaments; it's going to be fun this year. Hopefully, we will be able to fight the fact that we live in such an out-of-the-way location (Miami) and travel to more state tournaments.

Nice to see you on the boards, Matt. I'm even more pleased that you all are finally coming to a good tournament. I will finally have to stop poking you all with my metaphorical stick about not coming to non-NAQT tournaments. I think at a house-written tourney, you'll only see significant competition from a couple of teams, but the overall quality of competition is improving, I must admit.

I'm even more interested in where you guys are planning on going to college. If any of you are staying in state, may I suggest FSU (cause we rock, and have an active team).

While Charlie has a point about the crowing thing, that isn't a small accomplishment for a Florida team. Just try and keep your revelry to a minimum.

In regards to the FSU team, Saiem, I have heard many good things about your school's team, and we would love to be able to play a friendly game against you guys in a tournament/pick your brains about how to get better/gain training strategies that work in practice.
I very much hope we'll be able to compete in the tournament Nov. 1; Steve Frappier, our coach, will need to confirm that date, and FSU's kinda far away. I'm sure some rising seniors on our team would be interested in hearing about the quiz bowl''s presence at FSU; it might be a motivation for them to apply there. I can't wait to see you guys at a tournament sometime!

We are always willing to lay the smack down on some young whippersnappers  . If you guys drive up the night before, we can play then, during the lunch break, or even after the tourney is over. Though I imagine and hope to see you at all the tournaments that the great Borglum is going to be putting on at Valencia. That will be the easiest avenue in which to both improve as a team, and to play us.

Woah! You guys aren't losing anyone to graduation!?! That's insane. Well, try to bring your JV team to the UF winter tournament (JV section) so I can see how they're doing (provided I'm not drafted into the senior division). I think a Pensacola vs Ransom match would be really intense. I think our team should have no real weaknesses except maybe a little geography. I also fear that we haven't really dug very deep into our respective fields. As for Rickards, when I last saw your JV team, I wasn't very impressed at all. We beat them twice without our third and fourth and fifth best JV players [we had a three man team and the third guy got one question right (about Reno 911)].So if some of them are moving up, they'll need to get better fast. With the small amount of knowledge about the teams I know, I think my rankings are:
1. Ransom Everglades
2. Florida
2. Pensacola (it's a tie. I know, a cop-out, but I fear the Matt Byrd and probably overestimate our abilities a little)
4. Rickards
5. South Fork (perhaps?)

I think there is only one member of the JV team that is going to be on the A team.

I'm probably overrating the Rickards team, though. Uhh, South Fork is done for at least a year or two. They lost their best 3 players at least.

So yeah, South Fork? Duh duh dead. We graduated our three highest scorers, and left behind Raymond La. You can look his PPG up if you want.

Give it a year, maybe 2. There is some potential to be nurtured, especially since the team that we tried to form as we left was composed of four freshman. As such, the real place to look for South Fork next year will be in JV. The varsity team will likely just be a shell of people who joined too late to make any difference.

I think my only regret about quizbowl is not really starting until Senior year (along with the rest of the team).

There was a tournament at Chiles on the 27th.

Fl. High, Rickards, Lincoln, and Maclay were the top 4 teams if I recall correctly.

Florida High dominated Rickards, and I want to say that Lincoln beat Maclay, but I could be pretty wrong about that.

It is also important to note that Rickards beat Lincoln quite handily too, so this is pretty much the order things should have gone in.

Rickards tournament was this past Saturday (15 November 2008). I don't have the actual results from the tournament (because I'm not from Rickards). I'll post the rough results (I don't think Rickards people use the forums).

Team Results:
1st: Florida High
2nd: Pensacola A
3rd: Chiles A
4th: Pensacola B

Pensacola A beat Florida High by a good margin in the preliminary rounds, but lost in the finals. The semi-final match was Pensacola A vs. Pensacola B and Florida High A vs. Chiles A. Chiles A beat the Pensacola B team in the prelims and again when competing for 3rd. The Pensacola A vs. Pensacola B match was pretty interesting with the penultimate question ultimately determining the game. End score: 330-320 I believe.

Individual top scorers:
1st: Matt Byrd (Florida High) with >100 points (surprise of the century)
2nd: Kay Li (Pensacola B) with 80-89 points
3rd: David Fleischhaur (Pensacola A) with 70-79 points

This is probably the last time I'm going to be on JV D=. Ultimately, I think we could have won 1st. The A team DID beat Florida High during prelims. I don't mean to sound arrogant, but I believe we could have won 1st if I decided to play on varsity (considering the varsity team doesn't do math well or quickly much less power questions. hehehe...). Anywhom, it was a decent tournament except the questions were quite elementary. It ended up being more like speed drills than actual questions. The powers were stupid easy sometimes.

Did they eventually get the stats right? They had Nathan Hunt (me) at 39ppg when I actually got 61ppg. Don't count Hardee out of it yet, we have 5-6 seniors and could break into the "good team" realm if I get some help. Our coach is also doing a good job with the training.

Yeah I don't know about stats, but this makes things interesting. I wanna see how you guys do at full strength and on longer pyramidal questions against each other.

Florida has tended away from one man teams lately, Matt is the last real powerhouse left, that can't be counted out of any tournament.

I was very disappointed to find out that the white supremacist player actually hasn't been playing this semester, and was replaced by an indian and a token white boy.

Actual scoring distribution from a tournament
Jew Girl: 24 ppg
Black Guy 1: 17 ppg
Random Indian: 17 ppg
Black Guy 2: 43 ppg
Token White Boy: 28 ppg

People aren't pulling their weight like they should.

Hey Ryan- thanks for reviving the thread! I'm very pleased with our team's performance this year, but we definitely faced a lot of challenges all throughout the year from several very good Florida teams. I was especially impressed by Pensacola High's team- Kay, David, and all those guys are really something to watch, and it will be interesting to see how we both do at NAQT Nationals. Can't forget Dr. Phillips and Florida High as well! Dr. Phillips, under the captainship of Kyle Jones, played us very stiffly in the NAQT State Final round, and Matt Byrd is always a fearsome competitor. Ryan- I don't think Ransom played Chiles this year, except for maybe a match at UF Winter, but I've heard great things about you guys; shame we didn't get to play you more! I seem to recall Eastside and Niceville having really good teams as well. All in all, it was definitely a banner year for Florida quizbowl- hope to play some of you guys again in college!

This year has been an interesting year. Dr. Phillips sort of came out of nowhere and astonished a lot of people seeing as most of the time the better schools are in the North of Florida. No surprise with Ransom Everglades. They were as good as ever. Pensacola has a bright future. Next two years we'll definitely be the team to beat as both David will be coming back next year and Nathan, Helie, and I will be here for two years.

Kay, I agree with you- Dr. Phillips was a fun surprise, though they have fielded good teams in the past, with Bo Sun as their captain. Nevertheless, they were a solid team, and should do relatively well at Nationals, though maybe not playoff level- 5-5 is my prediction. I'm a little disappointed that Florida High didn't show at States, as I know that they're the other really good team in the state. I think you guys should make the playoffs at Nationals (6-4 and above at prelims), and advance somewhat, though there are a lot of amazing teams there...

I agree with you in that Pensacola is the favorite in Florida to win NAQT States next year, though our team will put up a fight. Our strongest players (Jesse, me, James, Dan Becker) will be leaving, though we have some promising youth (Matt Susskind, Dan Trauner, David Froomkin, among others) who are talented and are working hard to improve. I predict an intense state championship match... Not sure how other teams are going to do next year, as I don't know if Doc Phillips' (or any of the other good teams') players are coming back. Good luck at Nationals and during your competitions next year!
