Delaware Fall Open IX (12/20/08) Wilmington, DE

Post by btressler »

Stretching the definition of "Fall" to the max, Wilmington Charter is pleased to announce the Delaware Fall Open will take place on 12/20/08. Information is available on the team website:

http://www.charterschool.org/clubs/acad ... l/fall.php

Registration begins immediately. Because a building snafu has pushed our date back one week and closer to schools' breaks, I do not expect the field to fill at 48 teams. But early registration is appreciated.

(*) Historical note: originally this tournament was held in October, hence the name. Ask Howard's John Gilbert, his team won the second iteration.

Bill,

Seton Hall will be coming to the Fall/Winter Solstice Open. However, I may just bring JV teams this year.

As an off-topic note, I wish more tournaments would offer JV. I mean, honestly, you know the freshmen are probably going to get beat by upperclassmen. See Daichi's remark about yawning.

Or at least, tournaments earlier in the year.

BIll, i love the JV system at your tournament for sure. I also wish more competitions would do this. My younger kids can't wait to play against competition they actually see as peers, instead of gods.

Anyway, we will certainly bring at least 3 teams (2 V, 1 JV), but most likely 4 teams (2 V, 2 JV). Thanks for the update. I'll let you know more firm numbers as time passes.

Pretty sure we're going. It's tentative 'cause it's the weekend of trimesters.

Bloomfield, tentatively, is going to try to make it. I'll update with a more definite answer later this week.

Now that the dust has settled...

I think we are using set 82A instead of the previously advertised set. This realignment was an attempt to not conflict with either LIFT and Bel Air.

At present time I can not find any tournaments within one state radius using this set, so I think it will work out.

RM will be there, most probably with 1 "V", 1 JV team, but that might become 2-1. Not sure yet, but we can get back to you soon.
The JV is a really good idea, and I'm happy to see somebody is taking the initiative to make a tournament where everyone can play inside their comfort level.

Please send an email when you've finalized your plans so I have a contact for the team. Thanks.

Much to my surprise, we already have 32 teams with several of the locals not yet on the list. So do let us know if you plan to attend.

The list of teams so far is great so far. I'm ecstatic so see so many other Delaware teams actually doing something that is not the Comcast Tournament.

Last I checked, I know we can bring one team, possibly two. I'll talk to Coach Caulfield and tell him to email you final details.

Tatnall got a new coach, who seems interested in doing more than just Chip-related activities. I sent the invitation to all the other Comcast teams, just as a courtesy to let them know there's "more out there".

We are now at around 40 confirmed, in addition to the interest above. I will make every effort to find readers to accommodate all who want to attend. I think readers will be the limiting factor.

Well now that we have learned that Comcast is no longer sponsoring the "Comcast Tournament" and it may or may not exist... this is especially important.

Oops, the cat got out of the bag.

I had seniors who were all but begging me to take them to Chip because NAQT is our graduation. Guess that won't happen now that we can't win an entry. Shucks.

Would any of those schools show up if we did an event at CR? Maybe I'd just bring the freshmen and sophomores. I think many of those teams existed solely for Comcast and will now fold.

I would love to hope so. This makes me more willing to try that... how it would work, what set we would use, etc, i have no idea. But i don't want these teams to disappear now, a couple of the Sussex teams were decent.

That's my fear too. This sucks.

Anyway, sorry to detract from the thread. We're still looking at our 2V/2JV teams of course.

Continuing to detract from the thread... I have been arguing for about a year now for a tournament at CR. Both as a fundraiser, and to get some more southern DE schools to an event that is not Chip.

Is it official that there will not be a Comcast tournament, or are things at least still kind of up in the air? Regardless, I would love to get a Tournament at CR going.

I sent this out to my mailing list today. Sorry if I accidentally missed you:
======================

Coaches and Players:

- Everything is set for this Saturday's tournament. If you have any changes to the list of teams, please let me know:

http://www.charterschool.org/clubs/acad ... lfield.php

- As a reminder, checks for registration fees can be made out to "Charter School of Wilmington".

- If you are lost or late, you may call my cell phone at no, not a chance on here. I will have a parent manning the phone to try and help you out.

- Something new and different that came up at last year's tournament was the use of GPS devices to find our school. If you are using GPS, make sure that you put in 100 NORTH Dupont Road. Since this is Delaware, there are lots of things named after the Duponts, and failure to use the "north" will lead you to the wrong place. You can also consult directions given at the bottom of this page:

http://www.charterschool.org/clubs/acad ... invite.php

Addendum: I am told by Coach Blayne from Half Hollow Hills West that you also have to get the zip code correct: 19807.

- We are going to offer consolation rounds this year, so if you miss your top bracket you will still have a spot on a consolation grid. These grids are single elimination.

- It does not appear that weather will be an issue. But if it is: I will make any postponement decisions by Friday at noon. I will send an email, post any announcements on my team's webpage, and post on hsquizbowl.org.

That's all that comes to mind right now. If there's any questions, please let me know.

See you Saturday!

Brother Nigel, do I have something that interests you!

To counter a recent trend of having to beg for any kind of stats to get posted, and to make sure I remembered how to do this, I created the following:

http://www.charterschool.org/clubs/acad ... dings.html

http://www.charterschool.org/clubs/acad ... dings.html

Of course, the ties are fake and will be deleted on Saturday. They will be replaced by actual results, which those of you playing along at home will be able to watch in (somewhat) realtime.

I will remind the players that NAQT is attempting to create a national results database and I will be asking for non-pseudonyms. If you want to check to see how the database lists you, look here:

How about pseudonyms for teams and not individual players (i.e. Charter's Star Wars/Harry Potter themed names in the past)?

We're going to knock that off for NAQT tournaments, because they only have letters listed on the website. (And most other tournaments not directed by me don't seem to appreciate them, even if we declare which team is the good one.)

They did let "Delcastle Z" through last January, though.

I was even going to make an effort today to make sure the school names I typed in matched the way NAQT lists them.

Weather update:

We are getting rain here right now. It is my understanding that north of us (like northern Jersey/Long Island) is getting snow.

At this present second, everything is a go, but I will understand if conditions become unsafe for some teams to travel.

Past tournament knowledge dictates that one could have a team namecard at registration in which each team gives the name that they are playing under and the pseudonyms of each of its players and the corresponding team/player names. You would then be able to let the kids use their pseudonyms, and have everything "typed up" for the "unofficial" results that get posted, but be able to (relatively quickly) change things for the "official" results that get sent to NAQT.

Just west of NYC, we are getting "hit" fairly hard. Most schools are cancelled today or have released early. The storrm is supposed to end tonight as sleet/freezing rain, then temperatures are supposed to plummet. Right now, it is not looking good for SHP. I can not speak for Kellenberg and HHH, but, to get to Delaware they will have to travel on the NJ Turnpike. Let's wait and see ...

I have already been contacted by Coach Blayne of HHH and his administration said no trips will be allowed.

This is a shame. And see, if I'd been allowed to have the tournament on the date I always had before, this wouldn't have happened. Stupid firemen's convention. Next year I am going to have a discussion both with you and the powers that be about whether a November date is feasible.

I will continue to keep my eye on the weather, but at this time it seems like we are just going to get rain.

Having to stop our bus from Central Delaware on that day to de-ice the windows on a 65-mph highway was kinda scary. But nonetheless, it was a fun day.

Good times. Anyway, i believe i may have one person not going from my C team tomorrow but whatever, we're still going with 4 teams, i haven't seen him in days but told others that i'm kicking him off the team if he doesn't show up. So they'll be even worse than usual.

And the advantages of our inept administration become clear. We never had any buses, so parents are driving. We initially had one unwilling to, but that situation is probably rectified.

We did get a lot of snow, though.

Well drive safely, and call me if you're running late. That will be totally OK, because I am going to need 10-15 minutes once I have a firmer idea exactly how many teams will make it to put together some kind of morning schedule.

Still only rain here. But Moravian called me and said they have 7+ inches of snow. And that's only about an hour north.

cvdwightw wrote:Past tournament knowledge dictates that one could have a team namecard at registration in which each team gives the name that they are playing under and the pseudonyms of each of its players and the corresponding team/player names. You would then be able to let the kids use their pseudonyms, and have everything "typed up" for the "unofficial" results that get posted, but be able to (relatively quickly) change things for the "official" results that get sent to NAQT.
In the blizzard of snow discussion, I forgot to say:

I am amenable to this compromise. It preserves player comedy with my desire to support NAQT's database.

There will be a sheet in your team folder asking for names. Put both a real name and alias if you desire.

SHP is officially out. With my kids coming from all over northern sections of New Jersey, I am not inclined to take too many chances for a 6:00 am departure tomorrow morning. Sorry Bill ... see you at the next one. (By the way ... the forecast is for 1-3 more inches where I live tonight and re-freezing overnight. Route 3, near my house, has been closed for several hours due to icing!)

I had not heard that through the grapevine yet. Looks like I'm stuck in the house for the night now

Varsity:

2. Walt Whitman
3. Blake A
4. Blake B

JV:
1. Richard Montgomery
2. Charter E
3. Wilmington Friends
4. Unionville B

I will tweak the final standings pages Sunday to show proper tournament progression.

Before someone asks: even though I said we'd take the top 12 in varsity, we added the 13 seed because then the other eight who stayed fit into their own quarterfinal. The only upset in the octo-final games was 9 beat 8.

Except for the case of the missing buzzer (sorry Andrew!), and a few other minor details, I thought things went fairly well. Thanks to everyone who was able to make it.

Wow, Caesar Rodney was mentioned twice in that last post! I guess we really let a mark on the tournament. "9 beat 8"... Bergen A seeded in the 9th spot... ouch. We were not expecting to play a team that good in such a low spot. It was abysmally upsetting when we initially thought we had a shot to making it to the next round (where we expected to lose anyways, but were still looking forward to the potential for one more win), and found out we were playing Bergen A, who some how had a record worse than ours (?). Well, I suppose stuff happens, and I'll leave it at that.

Overall though, I thought this was a very well run tournament and really did enjoy it. The war room was absolutely and I, as I'm sure many people do, appreciate having stats so early. Also, it was great to see some other Delaware teams finally who are not Charter (no offense), and the one Delaware match we did play was a very good match that was a lot of fun. So, nice job Mr. T and all of Charter students and staffers, this was a great tournament as usual.

Strange things happen with A-sets.
Anyhow, kudos to Gonzaga for a well-deserved victory, Charter for a well-run tournament and a fun trash round, and NAQT for producing another rotten A-set.

What a bizarre day- Our first match we were creamed by Bergen A, and our B Team later beat them. We lost in the semis to Gonzaga by five points- I negged on the last question and I'm still kicking myself for it. Good readers, good tournament, good questions [maybe too much sports and trash but that's not your fault], bad traffic on the way back.

Was this an A Set? I was under the impression it was a normal IS Set.

Yep. That's why they were easy. And sucked. The trash was pretty good (oxymoron outside of QB) and it was well run on the whole. Kudos to Charter.
