ACF Winter Northeast at Yale (1/17/09)
Yale Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce that we will host ACF Winter Northeast on Saturday, January 17. Some details borrowed (i.e. stolen) from the global thread:
Questions:
ACF Winter is a packet-submission tournament, and is intended as a regular-difficulty event, with questions slightly harder than those at ACF Fall but comparable to Penn Bowl 2007 or 2008. Per the ACF packet submission guidelines located at http://www.acf-quizbowl.com/documents/packetsub.php, "any team with at least one person on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2007 is required to submit a packet in order to participate in an ACF tournament in 2008-2009. All ACF tournaments, NAQT Division I or Division II SCT, NAQT ICT, and typical academic invitationals count as regular collegiate academic tournaments for this purpose, but trash or 'hybrid' tournaments, College Bowl/HCASC, and tournaments played on NAQT 'invitational series' questions do not."
For teams required to submit packets, please refer to the guidelines above, and submit your packets according to the following schedule:
Packet submitted by Nov. 15: -$50
Packet submitted by Nov. 29: -$25 (-$50 for optional packets)
Packet submitted by Dec. 13: No penalty (-$25 for optional packets)
Packet submitted by Dec. 20: +$25
Packet submitted by Jan. 4: +$50
No packet submitted by Jan. 4: Dropped from tournament, unless prior arrangements have been made.
Fees:
Base fee: $120 per team
Buzzer systems: -$5 each
Staffers: -$10 each
Laptop: -$5 each (max 1 per team)
Travel: -$10 for every 200 miles traveled (one-way)
International: -$20
Teams new to ACF: -$25
Teams new to quizbowl: -$75
High school teams: -$50
To register, contact me (Michael Bilow) at firstname dot lastname {at} yale {dot} edu. More details after winter break.

Re: ACF Winter Northeast at Yale (1/17/09)
Unless the 18th suddenly looks more attractive, I will not be in attendance because an exam was just rescheduled to that day, but the packet I wrote is blind to all of Harvard, so we'll see if anyone else is interested.
I may try to assert that I have some kind of conflict with the 17th, but I don't think they've ever made accommodations for anyone. Sadness.

Dartmouth submitted 2 packets so I would assume they are coming with at least two teams. Hampshire, MIT, Columbia? I'd love to hear from you guys. The Quest for the Historical Mukherjesus wrote:Is this happening? We're showing up with one team (me/Aaron) if it is.

Hey Everyone! ACF Winter's in about a week, and so far the field is:
Brown
Hunter College
Dartmouth (2-3)
RPI
Hunter HS (1-2)
The driving directions attached were for our high school tournament in the fall, but the same pretty much applies. One change is that we'll be holding the tournament in Allen K. Watson Hall (AKW), which is at 51 Prospect Street, on Prospect between Grove and Trumbull. It's a big red brick building--you can't miss it.

Edit: Minus Harvard (Watkins), plus 1-2 Hunter HS.

I have to drop because the powers that be that rescheduled my final got their asses owned by larger and more powerful powers that be. So now I have to take a final instead.

So with only eight teams, is this going to be a full round robin format?

Re: ACF Winter Northeast at Yale (1/17/09)
I'm not running the tournament, but I can tell you that we have three packets from Northeast teams. That means that with 8 teams, we can't run a 14-round double RR because that leaves three packets that are potentially not blind to teams that will face off in a final. I suggest a full RR (7 games in 7 rounds) followed by a split into two brackets of 4, who play a double RR within the bracket (6 games in 8 rounds). This allows the non-blind packets to be used by scheduling them for the byes of the writing teams. Two packets are left to play off an advantaged final if necessary.aarcoh wrote:So with only eight teams, is this going to be a full round robin format?

Re: ACF Winter Northeast at Yale (1/17/09)
Double RR of two brackets of 4 teams is 6 games in 6 rounds--no byes. 8 teams is not a convenient number for a packet-submission tournament; if you want to use up a few field-submitted packets, try the Partial Submission Round Robin schedule listed here. It gives 7 games to each team in 8 rounds and uses up to 4 non-blind packets.grapesmoker wrote:I'm not running the tournament, but I can tell you that we have three packets from Northeast teams. I see only one conflict between the teams coming on Saturday and the list of likely packets Trygve sent out last night.
So can't we just not use the one conflict packet, and run a double RR with an advantaged playoff if necessary?

Re: ACF Winter Northeast at Yale (1/17/09)
More actually, Darmouth A and C, as well as Brown, submitted packets. We haven't found a place to park the Dartmouth C packet yet, but we probably will find some use for it. Whether we did or not, it wouldn't matter since less Dartmouth and Brown only leaves 15 blind packets, which is good only for a double-RR plus a one-game final; it's especially problematic that the packets come from the two teams who are likely to meet in that final.

Hosts must keep statistics for the entire tournament using the SQBS program, fully and accurately entering all team, individual, and packet statistics that the program uses (remember to enable "round reports"), and publicly post all SQBS reports no later than the Sunday evening following the tournament.
