NIU Huskie Bowl - 2/14/09 - Dekalb, IL

Post by Irreligion in Bangladesh »

We are pleased to announce the revitalization of Northern Illinois University's Huskie Bowl, to be held on February 14, 2009. This tournament will use NAQT IS-83. Field size will determine the number of guaranteed games, although this number will be no less than 5 for all teams and no less than 9 for all playoff teams. We are currently capping the field at 16 teams, although this number may rise. Information regarding cost and discounts will be posted soon.

If you are interested or have any questions, please email either myself or Kristin at the email addresses below.

We are looking forward to another great season of Illinois quizbowl!

Official Announcement!

We are pleased to announce the revival of Northern Illinois University's Huskie Bowl Invitational Tournament, to be held on February 14, 2009! This tournament will use NAQT question set IS-83, and will serve as a qualifier for both NAQT Nationals and, tentatively, PACE Nationals. We will be using NAQT rules, but matches will be untimed. After you have registered, we will e-mail you a description of our modified NAQT game procedure, with links to the NAQT homepage and rule book.

Field size will determine the number of guaranteed games, but this number will be no less than five for all teams who attend and no less than nine for all playoff teams. Non-playoff teams are invited to stay for afternoon scrimmage rounds.

We are currently capping the field at 16 teams, but this number may rise if there is enough interest. Teams interested in registering more than one team should note that extra teams will be placed on a waiting list, to be accommodated after A teams and single team schools.

Send requests for registration forms to [email protected]. Please note your format preference; electronic and hard copies are available. Send completed registration forms to

Kristin Strey
Huskie Bowl Tournament Director
c/o NIU Honors Department
Campus Life Building Room 110
DeKalb, IL 60115-2828

or include all required information in an e-mail to [email protected] before December 31, 2008. Registrations will be dealt with on a first come, first serve basis.

Lunch orders can be made from Pizza Hut, Subway, or any combination of the two. Fill out the lunch order section of the registration form or send an e-mail clearly indicating your team's food order. Food will be delivered to the tournament site and distributed during the lunch break. Beverages will be provided at no additional charge. Teams are encouraged to remain in the building during lunch to avoid afternoon delays.

If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail Tournament Co-Directors Kristin Strey ([email protected]) and Brad Fischer ([email protected]). Thank you for your interest in this tournament. We are excited to help you and your team experience a fun and fulfilling year.

We're 99% sure it's going to be moved - the bureaucracy gave us the date, and said that any memorials for the one year anniversary of the shooting wouldn't interfere with our location on campus, then we heard from someone that there were to be no other events on campus anywhere that day, and while we're still checking to see if he's actually right, we're also preparing to switch to the 7th. The latter option looks like the path of least resistance, especially since Rockford Boylan cancelled their 2/7 tournament.

I'll post in here again when we know 100%. Thanks!

Also, by the way, I don't know the current field but it looks pretty strong from what I remember from Kristin.

If your close to maximum field size could you put us on the list? If the chance of us getting in is possibly an issue I will talk with our coach immedeately.

Not near the field cap yet, although it might be worth talking to your coach now just because, hey, get it out of the way. :)

I'm not sure whether to wait till after NT or not. Though my mom recently went through the whole finger printing thing for something else I do, and as a result she might be able to drive us.

If there is a worst case scenario would us attending with aliases be out of the question? Or should we just address that if it happens?

I'm guessing the alias thing wouldn't work, no. (However, if you want to play as aliases like Loyola did while also being a legal team, that's obviously OK :))

We're still trying really, really hard. We might have gotten a teacher to take us, but he is checking with his calendar and we should know tomorrow. Kristen, depending on when or if we find someone to take us, the check could not be ready for the 7th. Would it be ok if our check came after the tournament?

We're certainly hoping it will turn out well, and we're hoping that this will make it even more interesting:

Because of the tournament's date change, there will not be an available NAQT packet for the Huskie Bowl. Instead, we will be using HSAPQ. Oh, darn.

Ditto. Not only for the computational math aspect, but also because now Bettendorf's NAQT tourney in March can pull Illinois teams again! (When Winnebago switched to an IS set, we accidentally pulled Bettendorf's planned set, forcing them to change. I no longer have to feel like crap about it!)

Also, it's ACF set #3, for those keeping score at home.

Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't it be a good idea to check with HSAPQ before you up and insert power marks? I feel like they'd at least want to know what you were doing.

EDIT: I'm not affiliated with HSAPQ at all, if that matters.

Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't it be a good idea to check with HSAPQ before you up and insert power marks? I feel like they'd at least want to know what you were doing.

We've checked with HSAPQ, and I believe they're putting power marks into the questions. I was not in on the conversation with HSAPQ, so I don't know how that ended.

Kristin needs sleep...a lot of sleep :)

ETA: Actually, I do have the email conversation - HSAPQ is including powers.

Stop taunting me with the promise of sleep! There's no chance I'll get any until Sunday morning.

And, yes, HSAPQ was very obliging, and inserted powers for us. Hooray! Though I do feel a little sad that we're missing out on :bees: ...

The championship pool consists of Auburn A, Loyola A, New Trier, Buffalo Grove, Maine South, and St. Viator (not necessarily in that order of seeding.) Top two scorers in the morning were Ben Cohen (~130 ppg) and Siva Sundaram (~120 ppg), although that's the not the full list of all-tournament.

Agreed. Fantastic questions, fantastic format, fantastic tournament.

Kristin, were you the one that told us that a top-6 finish qualified us for the Nat'l Championship? If so, is that really true?

Thanks.

If you guys qualify for nats, it's pretty awesome. And if you guys actually go, it'd be insane, considering how much nationals cost/how you guys pay for yourselves.

Yeah...I really wanna go. But I'm not so sure this finish qualifies us, as I was told. How much do nationals cost?

Maybe I'm dumb, but it's in the hundreds. From my understanding, this wouldn't have been an NAQT qualifier, but it very well could have been a PACE qualifier. PACE is the one you want more, but it's out east (I believe George Mason), so you also factor in hotel and airfare. If you guys qualify, Draft up a real nice proposal to your AD.
