RAQIT I @ Robinson SS, Fairfax, VA -- cancelled

Post by Robbie Ram »

Due to a variety of local tournament conflicts and a general lack of space availability at Robinson between now and the end of the school year, I am disappointed to announce that the RAQIT I is cancelled... at least until 2009-10.

Thanks for your support, and I hope we can make it happen sometime next year.

Teams who pre-paid: refund checks will be mailed (or sent via "PONY" to FCPS schools) by the end of the week or early next week.

NAQT has confirmed that we will be using IS-83, and I have revised my initial post to refelct this.

TJ will probably send a few teams; we'll give you more information once it gets closer to the tournament.

Thanks, Harry... we'll probably make an "official registration is now open" announcement at the MOHIT, so we should have pricing info and such by then. I imagine registration fees will be similar to virtually every other NAQT tournament in the region; i.e. around $60 per team before discounts for buzzers, moderators, additional teams, "far-traveling" teams, et al.

FYI, all interested teams: moderator discounts (and maybe buzzer discounts) will likely be generous since our team is small and we will probably have to be beating the bushes for good readers and scorekeepers as well as buzzer systems!

No official registrations yet, but the following teams have expressed interest:

Thomas Jefferson HS for Sci./Tech. (several teams likely)
Longfellow MS
Wilson HS (DC)
Howard HS (MD)

If you don't want to officially register yet but want to express interest, please post below and let me know how many varsity and/or JV teams you might want to bring so we can get a gague of what the field might eventually become. Thanks!

We'd love to come, but unfortunately we'll be playing set 83 at the Blue Hen Invitational held at the University of Delaware a week prior to that.

Then you'd do really well in this tournament...

Wilson HS (in Washington DC) is interested but must find out if our kids are going to be in town (end of spring break)

Yeah, I'm sorry about that. We wanted a "regular" IS question set rather than an "A" set, and we wanted to get one that hadn't already been used at a tournament locally. That left us IS-83 or IS-85, and we figured (correctly) that the NAQT VA state championship at UVA would be using IS-85, so we had to go with IS-83 even though we realized that it would leave out Delaware teams and possibly other teams from the Northern Mid-Atlantic region.

I hope we're not going to be "leeching" teams that otherwise would have gone to the Blue Hen, as that was never our intent. When we attended the Blue Hen last year, very few MD/DC teams were there (and we were the only VA team), so we figured our tournament and the Blue Hen would be drawing different teams anyhow (aside from Delaware teams that travel alot, like Caesar Rodney & Charter).

Yeah for whatever reason, lots of "northern" teams tend to come UD to the tournament from PA and NJ, and a fair amount from NE MD and DE of course. It's been the case for years.

And it's fine, obviously you did what you could. We'll shoot for next year. Good luck running this one!

Probably between 5PM and 6PM, maybe a bit earlier... but that will depend on the as-yet undermined playoff format.

It seems to me that at this past weekend's M.O.H.I.T tournament, the TJ tournament directors managed to get in 10 rounds (plus a one and a half hour lunch break) by 5:30 PM despite not starting rounds until 9:20 or 9:30 AM. We figure we can match that my using a similar playoff format with "live" stats kept on Taft— assuming we start the tournament by 9AM, average 30 minutes per round, have a 1 - 1 1/2 hour lunch break, 1/2 hour for playoff announcements and individual prizes, and finish with a total of 10 rounds.

I'll express interest as well. Delaware is a strong contender, too. So if you're indeed using the same set, we'll only be able to attend one of the two unless enough different students are available on each weekend to actually attend both.

[edit: ]We are also looking into the possibility of using HSAPQ questions instead of NAQT in order to not conflict with the Blue Hen tournament in Delaware on March 21 (which is also NAQT using IS-83). So far we've received no response yet from HSAPQ as to the availability of Spring questions sets.

Thanks Michael. :) I heard through the grapevine that Charter would want to host an HSAPQ event this Spring (April, perhaps) but i'm not sure what sets are going to be available then. Would ACF-style set #3 be "over" by that time? Will they create 4 sets? Or 5? I know you don't have the answers, but i'm hoping someone here does since it's a little unclear just how many questions HSAPQ is going to write this year.

It's official: we now have permission to use an HSAPQ set for RAQIT I (set number TBD)... so come on & sign up, all you Delaware & Northern Maryland teams-- we are no longer conflicting with the Blue Hen at U. Del. (yippee)!

We have confirmed that we will be using HSAPQ's ACF question set #4 (see revision to our main posting at the top of this thread). We have also "officially" requested PACE affiliation, so we should have that confirmed shortly.

Don't forget, we are offering early registration & early payment discounts, so don't be shy— sign up now and beat the rush!

I sent a e-mail reply, but we're thinking we might be able to bring two teams to this. I don't know when i'll be able to confirm it, but i think i'd be able to find a group of 4 that would want to go as the B Team. I'll try to find out as soon as possible, but it might not be for a while because i'd also have to find a volunteer willing to drive that group along with the A Team two hours from Dover, DE.

Tentative format update:

The first 4 or 5 rounds will be bracketed round robin matches. The top 1 or 2 teams (and possible additional wild card teams, depending on the final field size) from each preliminary bracket will be re-bracketed for playoff purposes into 2 groups (again depending on the field size) and again play round-robin, with the non playoff teams playing 4 or 5 (yes— dependent on field size) swiss-paired consolation matches using a card system.

The teams from the playoff groups will be paired by win-loss record (1st vs. 2nd, 3rd vs. 4th, etc.) and play a single match to determine 1st through Nth places. In the case of equal W-L records after the playoff round robins, the tie breaker will be PPG during the playoff round robins only followed by overall PPG (if necessary). Finally, in the unlikely event that the #1 - #2 and/or #3 - #4 teams still have an identical W/L record as their counterpart after the placement round, they will play one final match against that team again (i.e. 1st vs. 2nd, 3rd vs. 4th) for the final determination of 1st through 4th places. For final standings purposes, consolation teams will be ranked in order after the playoff teams by overall W-L record, with overall PPG as the tiebreaker.

Assuming I'm doing my math correctly (...which, perhaps, I shouldn't assume...), that means each participating team should have a minimum of 9 rounds of play and a maximum of 12 rounds. We should be able to wrap up the whole tournament by no later than 5:30— and possibly as early as 4:30.

I want to emphasize that this whole format is indeed still tentative, and I welcome comments, questions, and general feedback about it. Do I need to adjust this in some way? If so, how? Does it make sense to everyone? Your thoughts are appreciated!

"Expressed interest" / waiting list
State College Area HS (PA)

[re-edit, yet again:] The field is back to 32 teams thanks to the addition of James Madison HS. If you wish to attend this tournament but haven't yet signed up, you can join the waiting list by registering at the RAQIT I official registration link: http://jwrobinson.wufoo.com/forms/raqit-i-registration/.

[corrected:] PLEASE NOTE that contrary to this tournament's ORIGINAL announcement, we are in fact using HSAPQ questions, not NAQT questions. That also means we no longer conflict with the Blue Hen tournament in Delaware on March 21; therefore, teams who wish to do so may attend both without compromising question integrity!

It looks like we'll be able to send yet another team. Should we register for the new team separately, or should we re-register completely?

I've updated the field again (see earlier post) after a couple of "B" teams dropped out. That puts us back at 32 teams, so I'm closing official registration at this point. Not-yet-registered teams who may still wish to attend can join a waiting list in case any other teams disappear before next Wednesday, at which time the field will be considered "finalized".
