It's from a newsletter available to IHSSBCA members only, and as far as I know the poll results don't get posted on the website. I suspect it's okay, but wanted to cover my butt.

Past final poll results are in the QBWiki, and have been for about a year, without any issues having been brought up ..... I am sure that, for what they are worth, the poll results will not be a breach of proprietary info.jonah wrote:It's from a newsletter available to IHSSBCA members only, and as far as I know the poll results don't get posted on the website. Re: Illinois '08-'09
Congrats to Carbondale, who sailed through the field yesterday. We got creamed by WWS in our first match, then had a big comeback to narrowly beat them in the Consolation Final. Auburn beat WWS on the last question in their match.
Posting the poll is OK. It should be on our website and hopefully will be soon--it is now but hasn't been updated since September. In general, posting newsletter articles here is not OK.

I have begun to coordinate the tournament calendar for 2009-2010. If you are planning to host a tournament (especially a new tournament) send me a message at [email protected]. We will publish a tentative calendar in the May issue of Scholastic Visions.
Especially welcome are frosh/soph tournaments (or frosh/soph divisions of varsity tournaments) and any tournaments in central and southern Illinois.

Let it be known that on the 7th day of March, 2009, the first scholastic bowl match question to ever reference the IHSA State Series of Bass Fishing was asked at the Streator Northlawn Knowledge Power Tournament for middle schoolers. Credit (or blame) for this pioneering act goes to DogEnd Productions of Streator. I'm assuming there'll be a prize of some sort sent by Tom Egan shortly.

We'll have to add that to our "Things to study for the IHSA state tournament", I think we'll put if after the Graduated Driver's license program, and before the types of screwdrivers.Woody Paige wrote:Let it be known that on the 7th day of March, 2009, the first scholastic bowl match question to ever reference the IHSA State Series of Bass Fishing was asked at the Streator Northlawn Knowledge Power Tournament for middle schoolers. I did recently get a trophy from a return address in Streator, but it was topped with the back end of a donkey. The IHSA State Pools are up in the ScoreZone. If the top seeds win their Sectionals...
Class A Pool 1: Warrensburg-Latham, Byron, Effingham Saint Anthony, Litchfield
Class A Pool 2: Petersburg PORTA, Metropolis Massac County, Chicago Latin, Macomb
Class AA Pool 1: Auburn, Hinsdale Central, Stevenson, Homewood-Flossmoor
Class AA Pool 2: Wheaton Warrenville South, New Trier, Carbondale, Springfield
(I am not predicting that the top seeds will all win their Sectionals.)

That is surprisingly close to being fair. I'm impressed. One of Springfield or WWS could be swapped with one of H-F or Hinsdale Central, but, hey, whatever.Shcool wrote:The IHSA State Pools are up in the ScoreZone. If the top seeds win their Sectionals...

You laugh, but I've actually spent quite a bit of class time this semester discussing the variation in local units of governance across the US, and their implication for regional planning. I'd love to see a good tossup on townships.ihsa regionals wrote:township - what's a subset of counties in illinois?!?!?!? townships, har har har. i cant believe you didnt know that. i'm awesome.

You, Chris White, are continuing to miss the point. It's very, very difficult or even impossible to write a good tossup on townships; even supposing it's possible, regularly producing good questions on zany topics like that is far, far beyond any sane estimate of the IHSA consortium's abilities. IHSA would be better served with its writers creating down-the-middle, normal questions of high quality, rather than on whatever wacky zoning-based topics you (or they) happen to be interested in.

Also, whose idea was it to count literature in the LA subject field. All of Monday night I had night mares of a round ending up 2/2 spelling, 2/2 grammar, and 2/2 literature. We all know that the distribution of the tournament needs to change, but even the sub distros present opportunities for disastrous question spreads.

I never claimed it wasn't a niche interest; I never said such a question was actually a good idea, especially at the high school level; I fail to see the big disagreement here.Captain Sinico wrote:You, Chris White, are continuing to miss the point. I'll be honest. Of all of the toss-ups I have ever heard playing scholastic bowl, this one makes the list of the worst three I have ever heard. Not to mention, I went out driving today to try to find there aforementioned shapes, and much to my chagrin, I found none. The question writer must have been from Safety Village or something.ihsa regionals wrote: white triangle - omg my FAVORITE category... drivers ed!!!!! what's a yield sign on the pavement???? Re: Illinois '08-'09
It was a compromise ..... originally, language arts was an entire category ..... mandatory 2/2 per match! There were those who wanted it banished, but there were too many people who wanted it saved. The compromise was to shuffle it in to literature, with some of us hoping it would go away or at the very least rear its head less often. In some years it makes less of an appearance than in others. This eventually allowed us to open up fine arts to a larger distribution and reduce trash.BGSO wrote:Also, whose idea was it to count literature in the LA subject field.
I moderated for three matches involving what I suppose would amount to four non-"elite" teams. The language arts questions were not answered. So, since "elite teams" don't want them, and non-elite teams can't seem to answer them, it makes me wonder what sub-set of coaches/officials/players really want them to stay?
The drivers ed question went dead in every room. Again, if the non-elite can't answer, and the elite don't want them, then why are there people in the AdCo who hold on to teaching "someone" a lesson by retaining these categories? My answer to my own rhetorical question is coaches who think they know what is best for kids, rather than listening to some sound judgements from adults (young and old).

In serious business, best of luck to all teams at Sectionals. May the questions be no more than a minor hindrance, and may good quizbowl decide Sectional champions. A reminder, from past years - Round 2 is hard and usually full of curveballs. Teams score much lower in Round 2 of Sectionals than 1 and 3. This isn't based on me seeing the questions - because I haven't yet - just basing this off of the last 5 years (at least) of upsets all over Round 2.
And St. Viator - enjoy MCMNT. I think you'll have the best day of us all. :)

Congratulations, Class A voters! You're a bunch of idiots! Greg Dzuricsko gets All-Tournament at Huskie Bowl ahead of no less than 3 members of the Class AA All-State team, and that apparently isn't enough.
If this is a result of him not being in the top X for All-Sectional to get considered for All-State, modify "Class A voters" to "Seneca Sectional voters."
EDIT: After having talked with an All-State voter and hearing the other side of the story, I retract my statement that Class A voters are "a bunch of idiots." I disagree with how the voting went, but the vitriol and rage has been soothed.
I'm leaving the post up because, hey, editing out posts isn't cool.

I haven't been able to show my face in public since Loyburn. Everything will be fine...until I start having flashbacks of Siva and Zahed dismantling my pride.David Riley wrote:Jeff, you really need to get out more.

Serious question: Does WGN just have you permanently penciled in to appear annually, the Thursday before the scholastic bowl state finals? Obviously, you must be doing a great job if they keep calling you back!Shcool wrote:I will be on AM 720 Thursday at 9:15 AM CDT. http://www.wgnradio.com
I am off for the 1st 15 minutes of your broadcast so I'll be listening in!

Can someone record this from the WGN Radio feed using software like MP3myMP3 for Windows or Wiretap for Mac? I'd do it, but I strongly desire to not be awake then.

Re: Illinois '08-'09
Most of the program will consist of me reading questions for the hosts/producers. They've decided that they like having me on, so all I have to do is tell them I want to go on, and they'll put me on when I want (as long as it doesn't conflict with Sex Thursday, which starts at 11:00, and as long as I don't ask them often). It's pretty cool, because it is a huge audience. I've asked them if they wanted some students on or a coach from a team that actually won its Sectional, but they like the continuity of having the same person each year.

I heard Reinstein's bit last year and that's the only time I've ever listened to them. I just looked Sex Thursday up on their website, but they were really vague ("Throw in a Barney tape to distract the kids" was all they really said). Please explain.cornfused wrote:Not a big Kathy and Judy listener, Jonah?jonah wrote:What.Shcool wrote:Sex Thursday

My Grandmother has WGN on constantly, and I shudder to think that she is listening in to an old ladies version of Loveline.jonah wrote:I heard Reinstein's bit last year and that's the only time I've ever listened to them. Also, recording the interview probably won't be necessary, as it'll probably be up on their "podcast" within the week afterwards. I have last year's interview downloaded if anyone is interested in that.

We now know that Scholastic Bowl is not the only activity where the IHSA enforces stupid uniform rules. Hopefully, backlash from this will make them realize how stupid these rules really are.

Re: Illinois '08-'09
Beginning in 2009-10, the IHSSBCA Steering Committee will have Student Liaisons for the entire year. Two high school students and one college student will be full voting members of the committee, beginning at our meeting in August. Students need to apply for the positions by May 1, and they will be selected by May 22.
If selected, Liaisons must become IHSSBCA members and attend our Annual Meeting, which is currently scheduled for Sunday, January 31. Liaisons will be full voting members of the Steering Committee, including email votes and two online meetings, one in November and another in May.
To apply to become a Liaison, send an email to [email protected] and [email protected] with the following information:
Name, School, Year In School
Experiences with Scholastic Bowl and/or Leadership (at most half a page)
Ideas for improving Illinois High School Scholastic Bowl (at most half a page)
Students who will be in high school next year are eligible to apply for High School Liaison, and students who will be in college next year are eligible to apply for College Liaison. For the College Liaison, preference will be given for both experience with Illinois High School Scholastic Bowl and Collegiate Quizbowl.

Which, if I heard correctly, was approved over stringent objections from some coaches who felt it was inappropriate for "kids" to have a voice. Kudos to the IHSSBCA for not following that path.Shcool wrote:Beginning in 2009-10, the IHSSBCA Steering Committee will have Student Liaisons for the entire year.
