From the invitation:
The questions used in our tournament are being provided by Quillan’s Questions once again, who has agreed to write the toss-ups in a “pyramid” style, where the questions begin with obscure, yet uniquely identifying clues, before moving on to more generally-known clues. The idea of “pyramid” style is to reward kids for having detailed knowledge and not just great buzzer speed. This style has been adopted by our state’s high school association, so it will be great preparation for those players who will play at the next level.

Quillan is the only writer I've found who will attempt to write pyramidal style questions for middle school, so she has a chance to be well-positioned if/when the market for middle school pyramidal toss-ups ever takes off. The questions needed a lot of work last year, but Mr. Reinstein was a huge help in offering to edit/rewrite questions, and they were somewhat well-received, aside from some coaches who were wishing they were shorter and more hosey.
Hopefully, this year's edition will be even better. To that end, are there any pyramidal toss-up experts who are willing to review a set or two of the toss-ups some time in January or February? I don't want to ask Reinstein to do it all again.

I wouldn't call myself an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd be glad to look them over. If you can get them to me before January 20, that would be ideal, since that's the end of my winter break.

I could do at most a round or two, and like Brad, I wouldn't be able to get it done until after February starts.

If you want help in January (i.e. before your other volunteers), I can give them a look at least or do more if you would like. I am obviously not from the Illinois school of quizbowl, but as I am hoping to start a middle school format in the mid-Atlantic, it would be nice to see other attempts at this level. If you are still interested in help, just send some specifics to outhwest AT gmail DOT com

Re-seed teams 1-16 in a "champions" bracket, and 17-32 in a consolation bracket. Losing your initial bracketed game doesn't knock you out of anything, even in the champions bracket. Losing round 5 in the champions bracket, however, knocks you into the consolation bracket. Losing in round 5 or later in the consolation bracket sends you home. Round 6 also knocks out the 4 runners-up in the champions bracket. There'll be trophies for 2 different consolation winners, and 1st - 4th place in the champions bracket.
The point of this new format is to ensure everyone still gets their guaranteed 5 matches, but pairs up teams that have been losing in rounds 4 and 5, hopefully making for more competitive games.

No, no; Pi Approximation Day is July 22. March 14 is Pi Day proper. But to answer the original question, I'm torn between whether I prefer Einstein or a weak pun—these are a few of my favorite things.

Also, I just discovered that NTV will be on Jake Gyllenhaal's birthday. That's going to make for a great theme!

Final Results from the Barrington Invitational Tournament.
1st: Barrington Station I (35-0 on the season)
2nd: Lincolnshire Daniel Wright
3rd: Buffalo Grove Twin Groves
4th: Cary JHS

Consolation I Champion: Barrington Station III (knocked out of the champions bracket by Twin Groves in round 5, but proceeded to defeat Palatine Quest, Lemont Old Quarry, and Barrington Prairie to finish 7-1 for the day).
Consolation II Champion: New Lenox Martino (started the day 0-3 in pool play, was seeded 27th out of 32 for the playoff rounds, LOST their safety game to Beecher (round 4), before proceeding to defeat Deerfield Holy Cross, Antioch, Burbank Liberty, and Streator Northlawn to close the day.

'B' Team tournament:
1st: Lincolnshire Daniel Wright
2nd: Buffalo Grove Twin Groves
3rd: Cary JHS (I sense a pattern here...)
4th: Willowbrook Westview Hills

In other notes; Mr. Egan owes someone on Twin Groves A a $10 bill. Egan felt pretty certain this bonus part would go dead and offered a $10 bill to the middle schooler who could answer it:
Landform where valley glaciers may form in a hollowed-out portion of a mountain." Answer: Cirque

And the final bonus of the championship round was about explorers... Shackleton & Cortes was scored by Daniel Wright, while Livingston was rebounded by Station. DeSoto went dead. I bring this up because I was told by my editorial board there was no way middle schoolers would know Shackleton.

Many thanks to Mr. Price and Barrington Station for playing host to another excellent tournament. The set was well-written (thanks largely to the aforementioned editorial board) and seemed to hit the target difficulty. It suffered slightly from some interesting answer selections, but in no way did this detract from the overall awesomeness of the set. I tried to compile some data as I moderated; primarily, how far into each toss-up correct or incorrect answers were given. Teams have continued to exceed my expectations this season in many ways, picking up some bonus parts I also would’ve considered impossible. While at first glance I considered the math somewhat difficult, it proved challenging, yet convertible to some amazingly talented math players and teams. I’m not sure which made me more nervous, moderating some tightly contested matches or navigating Illinois’ tollways (I’m not sure I blinked the entire two-hour drive home, though I’m sure the traffic would likely be considered non-existent by my suburban brethren). I’ll try to make a more detailed report tomorrow after some much needed sleep and the return of my heart to its normal rhythm.

Finally, there’s something I hope you’ll share with the Barrington Station students and parents, as well as all of the teams which competed in my room. Everyone was so amazingly gracious, complimentary, and appreciative. In five years of coaching or helping coach, I’ve found that no one has a problem approaching me when it comes to complaining or being critical, but very few will do the same to express their appreciation. However, every single parent, coach, and student I encountered today proved this need not always be the case. While I likely deserved little if any of it, the kindness I was shown today speaks volumes about the character Mr. Price (and the scholastic bowl community at large) has instilled in his players.

First of all, congrats on pulling this off so well. It's absolutely wonderful that you and Andrew Wehrman were able to put together the tournaments you did.

As far as the bracketing, it does not make a lot of sense. Cary JHS lost its first match, then won its next two. Buffalo Grove Aptakisic won its first two matches and then lost its third. Why does Cary get to keep going while Aptakisic is done? It looks to me that losing the first match not only does not count against you, but actually gives you an advantage. If I was in the Barrington Station III vs Cary JHS match, and my choices were winning so I could play Twin Groves or losing so I could play Bolingbrook and then either the #4 or #5 seed, I would be tempted to play the subs. It would have made more sense if the first round winners played the first round losers in the second match or to just keep all the first round losers in a consolation bracket. It's not the end of the world, but it's something you probably want to do differently next time. (EDIT: I clicked the next page and saw that you actually did go the consolation route, though it seems a little inconsistent that certain match losers went down there while others stayed in the top bracket.)

As someone who lives near Route 22, I'm wondering what it is about proximity to that road that produces superior Junior High Scholastic Bowlers.

Match 7 Bonus # 8
Literature--- 4 parts

Part 3 ... This book, the third publislhed, follows Prince Caspian as he attempts to find the seven lost Lords of Narnia..

Our team answered The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

which is INDEED Book 3 which follows Prince Caspian
She also knew Part 4, but when your moderator told her she was wrong- she thought maybe she mixed up parts 3 and 4 and gave the answer the 3 again.

Needless to say-------------- The answer to part 3 on the answer sheet was wrong, it says The Silver Chair, which is book 4.
This would have been an additional 10 for us -- and 5 less for New Lenox which would have given us the win.
Here's the actual bonus:
Identify the following books from C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia.
1. The first book written and the second in chronological order, this book sees the White Witch befriend Edmund with Turkish Delight.
2. The first book in chronological order, this book sees yellow and green rings, in addition to Aslan singing the creation of Narnia.
3. This book, the third published follows Prince Caspian as he attempts to find the seven lost Lords of Narnia.
4. Chronologically the last book in the series, this book sees creatures loyal to Aslan follow him into his country, while those unfaithful to him disappear into nothingness.
1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
2. The Magicians Nephew
3. The Silver Chair
4. The Last Battle

This bonus was not an original, I want to attribute it to Garb... I haven't read this series, so can anyone offer validation or refutation of this coach???

That is my bad, I think after I wrote that I was alerted that VotDT had already been used, so I must've changed the answer as a note to myself to rewrite that question (a bad idea in retrospect).

The way the rest of the situation played out makes no sense. How did she know part 3 was wrong before she gave the answer to part four?

Also, the steps the coach took to protest don't make any sense, it sounds like they just gave up on something that cost them the match, I am confused?=.

IESA is where you give your answers one at a time and they're ruled, correct or incorrect. It's a good reason to have the ACF formatted bonus! Because then you never wonder if you gave the wrong part.

What SHOULD be the clue to match that answer then?

I guess what is bothering me about this is the actions of the coach. Did he bring this up during the match? If he did, and the result was not changed, then he has a right to be angry. From everything I can tell, he brought it up later. As a coach, it is your job to challenge things that are incorrect. If he failed to do that, what were you supposed to do? Personally, I find it alarming that as the TD, nobody came up to you to tell you that the part was wrong. Is it illegal to challenge answers? Is there some limit to challenges? If the answer to this is no and the coach did not approach you, he has nobody to blame but himself.

I dunno...find a time machine and act accordingly? My team missed that part, too, and DIDN'T 2nd guess their part 4, and won by 5 points, so no harm done there.

In one of the conversations, the following was mentioned:

In other notes; Mr. Egan owes someone on Twin Groves A a $10 bill. Egan felt pretty certain this bonus part would go dead and offered a $10 bill to the middle schooler who could answer it:
Landform where valley glaciers may form in a hollowed-out portion of a mountain." Answer: Cirque

The middle schooler who answered this from Twin Groves is Saieesh Rao. I know this becuase I am his parent and I was present.
And of course, Mr. Egan can keep the $10 bill for future bets.

Ah! I recognize that name. I didn't get to watch my teams play too much, but the Station III kids made a point of proclaiming the awesomeness of Saieesh after their drubbing. Is this the year Twin Groves topples Daniel Wright for the Patriot Conference crown?? I say they have a strong chance.

I <3 this! It seems the percentage of toss-up heard prior to a correct answer being given goes down when my team is in the room. Witness the 4 toss-ups heard completely in the championship round. 2 of them were computation, 1 was a fairly short TV question. Only the Vonnegut toss-up would be considered academic. In the semifinal, of the 4 correct TU heard all the way through, 3 were computation, and 1 was another TV question re: Tim Russert.

If anyone wants to know why a q was answered as early as it was, let me know and I'll give you specifics of the question.

My mistake. I assumed since Daniel Wright took another state trophy that they won their conference, too. Since TG doesn't play State Series, I didn't realize how good they were last year since they didn't come to our tourney. But Hawthorn South won our conference tourney last year despite our #1 seed, too, so... there you go...
