The Emergency: at PACE
As per my announcement of the ROBOT postponement, I've decided instead to organize a packet submission tournament for PACE instead. I've got just enough time to be able to do this but not enough to do the full ROBOT that I wanted to do, but it's not going to be a conventional packet submission tournament, in the sense that you won't be choosing all your own teams. Instead, I'm designating as "writing captains" the following people, if they are interested:
Matt Weiner
Jonathan Magin
Seth Teitler
Mike Sorice
Ted Gioia
Mike Bentley
Charles Meigs
Andrew Hart
Trygve Meade
Rob Carson
Aaron Rosenberg
Dennis Jang
The idea is like this: these people (if they are interested in participating) are to head up the writing team. Any other player who is coming and would like to play should plan to join up with one of these people. You will be responsible for writing a packet by May 15 and there will be no charge to play. If you are listed as a captain on this list and you don't want to head up a packet-writing team, let me know and I'll put someone else in your place. My hope is that people can finalize teams in a few days and, as I said, get packets to me by May 15. I will also write a few editor packets to round out the tournament and that will be that.

Oh yeah, about difficulty: it's generally supposed to be around nationals-level difficulty or just below that, and the packets should be 24/24 standard ACF distribution.

If this is intended to be run Sunday night, I'm still up for reading. I could also make marginal contributions to the editors packets if needed, Jerry.

And a third thing: this tournament is mostly intended for college players, obviously, though high schoolers are invited as well. However, it would be best if writing teams had 3 college players on them before they pick up a high school player.

I'm pretty sure I'll play this. Assuming I do: if there are any UChicago-bound seniors out there that want to team up, drop me a line ([email protected]). No worries if you don't feel like writing questions.

Re: The Emergency: at PACE
So I'm not seeing significant traction on the spreadsheet or in this thread. Unless there are a lot of communications going on in private, it seems like the pool for this tournament isn't all that big. Might it be a good idea to start combining teams in order to make it more realistic that people will get their packets done on time?

Re: The Emergency: at PACE
Looks like we have 11 teams right now. I assume we want to wind up with an odd number. I count five teams with just one person right now; why not pick two of them and collapse them onto other one-person teams, going down to 9 teams? Or four of them could be assigned among the remaining one-person team and some of the two-person teams, going down to 7.

My position on bouncebacks in high school is enthusiastic apathy, so no. But I did think it might be interesting to try them out at a hard tournament like this, and I figured one held on PACE NSC weekend would be the appropriate time.

Re: The Emergency: at PACE
Yeah, it does sound like an interesting idea. I find that the bouncebacks always keep a certain pace (no pun intended) to a game, where, even on hard questions, teams that struggle with the tossups can still show deep knowledge with the other side's challenging third part. At a high level tournament, it is always nice to see three parts converted, and bouncebacks can only help this. Plus, bouncebacks cut down on that suspect "we would have 30'd that" attitude. I wouldn't be disappointed without them but would enjoy a collegiate experiment with them.Matt Weiner wrote:My position on bouncebacks in high school is enthusiastic apathy, so no. Re: The Emergency: at PACE
Still happening, for all I know. Several teams have combined due to other writing commitments, so I'm expecting around 9 or 10 packets from the field and planning to write about 3 or 4. I'll post an updated list later today; I'm sorry I haven't been keeping up on this, but I'm currently working 14 hour night shifts so my schedule is pretty crazy right now.

Re: The Emergency: at PACE
So here are the teams that are apparently playing:
Dennis Jang, Cameron Orth, Aaron Rosenberg, and Andrew Hart
Matt Weiner, Will Butler, Evan Adams, Tommy Casalaspi
Seth Teitler, Shantanu Jah, Guy Tabachnik, Charlie (Dees?)
Jonathan Magin and Gautam Kandlikar
Rob Carson, Andy Watkins, Hannah Kirsch, Bernadette Spencer
Mike Sorice, Ahmad Ragab, Trygve Meade, Chris Ray
I've heard no word as to whether Ted and Charles are still planning to play. It would be good if they did and also wrote a packet, since then with 3 editor packets that would make 10 rounds. I still don't have any packets though, so it would be great if all the teams listed above could send me their stuff by the end of Sunday. I've got to go through and edit out any repeats and also need some time to finish writing my 3 packets so the sooner you send stuff in, the easier it will be for me. On a related note, it looks like I will not be physically present at PACE so I would like to ask that someone, preferably not playing this event, act as a point-man for receiving the completed packets.

Re: The Emergency: at PACE
I currently have packets from the following teams:
Jang
Weiner
Teitler
Magin
In combination with what I'm writing that only makes seven packets. If people are interested in having this thing go beyond 7 rounds, they should send me questions! If not, hey, you're the ones playing.

CarsonHirschWatkins[Spencer] has a packet that is more than 3/4 done; I'm almost sure it will be done tonight, I guess, maybe.
