April 29: Pre-Nationals Goldfish Championship

Post by pblessman »

Last spring, sixty-six teams from across the US competed in the First Pre-Nationals Goldfish Championship, and this year's pre-nationals edition will launch on April 29. In the Goldfish Championship, your team can compete on NAQT questions against teams from all across the nation (and the maybe even the world) without having to leave your school.

All participating teams will be e-mailed a specially written NAQT packet with 30 TU and 24 PLEASE MAKE FUN OF ME BECAUSE I SPEAK NEITHER LATIN NOR ENGLISH, and on (or about) April 29 each team will get out their buzzer system and play a match against their favorite goldfish (i.e. NO opponent), moderated by the team coach (hence the tournament name!). The coach records the TU and Bonus scores for each question as well as on which word the team buzzed in and submits this info in Excel format.

The data will be analyzed to come up with two groups of results: The first list will show how many points each team scored against their goldfish on 24 TU/Bon, while the second group of data will show head-to-head scores for all possible permutations of teams. This means that if a hundred teams compete in this tournament, you will be able to see how you stack up against ninety-nine other teams!

The entry fee per team is $10; each school can enter as many teams as they like. The entry fee must be submitted by April 27 via PayPal to Phil Blessman at pblessman [at] yahoo [dot] com, or by snail-mail, payable to "Culver Academies" to Culver Quizbowl, c/o Phil Blessman, 1300 Academy Road, Culver, IN 46511. Please also feel free to write Phil at the same e-mail address if you have any questions! We hope you can all make it!

Two questions:

1. When you say "or about," does that mean that we can don't have to do it exactly that day? Our practices are normally on Thursdays; we can change it to Wednesday easily, but if we don't need to, we'd like to know.

2. How will this data deal with buzzer battles (i.e., two teams buzzing on on the same keyword)?

Last time, they gave each team half of the points.

Got the packet you sent via e-mail. We're supposed to read the bonuses that are immediately listed after the tossups? In other words, this doesn't look like a regular NAQT set, as bonus questions are listed right after the tossup ones, like a PACE packet.

You have to read associated bonuses in order to make sure that I am comparing apples with apples, i.e. every team who wins question #9 gets bonus #9, otherwise the head-to-head comparisons don't make sense as it would be unclear which bonus to assign to a won TU.

I've had a few stragglers who didn't get me their scores until this week. I will run the analysis this weekend. It doesn't take me days of actual work, but it does take me several hours as this is a self-written and pretty finicky Excel macro deal-e-o which needs to be customized every time I do this. If there is anybody out there with mad computer programming skills who wants to take a swing at this some time in the future to make this into a bit of a more stable analysis process, please contact me... maybe we could even have it web-based for data input? That would make things super-fantastic! I would be happy to reward you with dozens of dollars!!!

Re: April 29: Pre-Nationals Goldfish Championship

Um, if I think I found a mistake that may have affected our team in this packet (as in we gave a wrong answer, but the question had false information), when and whom can I report this? Cuz I found a major error in one of the first 24 questions that affected our team, but we feel shouldn't be penalized (we negged) as the question had a piece of false information.

DCDS buzzed in with "Oslo" on the hint that Al Gore won his Nobel Prize in this city. The question was looking for Stockholm, but the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, not Stockholm. Due to the error in the question, I have unneggified DCDS for that question. With the neg DCDS's Goldfish score would have been 695, so this question did not affect the outcome of the Goldfish standings.
