ANNOUNCEMENT: EFT 4 at Brown (Saturday, October 3)

Post by Dennis »

Brown Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce that Early Fall Tournament 4 (subtitle pending) will be held on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 (pending approval from administration). It will be a standard mACF academic tournament, and it will be on the same level as last year's tournament (around ACF Fall). Our goal is to attract newer players to quiz bowl by holding an early non-packet submission tournament, and it will be primarily written by me (Dennis Jang), Eric Mukherjee, Aaron Rosenberg, Jerry Vinokurov, Guy Tabachnik, Ian Eppler, and Daniel Klein.

Whenever you decide to register, please contact me at dennis _ jang AT brown DOT edu with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers. We’re hoping to be able to accommodate as many as 30 teams this year so that we avoid turning away any new teams, and, as a result, we would prefer that the more experienced players volunteer to staff so that we can host a well-run event that avoids running into the wee hours of the night.

Fee schedule:
Base fee: $100
Buzzer discount: -$5 each
Staff discount: -$10 each
Travel discount: -$10 for every 200 miles traveled

As usual, we are looking for teams interested in mirroring our tournament, so please contact me if you’re interested.

There is nothing more I want to do then spend my birthday at EFT playing quizbowl. Hopefully when college starts you will see GMU there with a team, or maybe two

Uh, well, I mean awesome if you personally want to take a trip to Brown, but there's sure to be a Mid-Atlantic mirror that GMU will probably attend.

Also dude, check this out. Here is a list of people who would probably like to be consulted before you declare their desire to attend an event:
-The GMU team

Considering that you have a record of declaring interest for an event and like never going to things ever, let me offer you some friendly advice: Do not continue to make these kind of statements, even if you mean them just to express your own personal wishes, and definitely do not make such statements that are basically assured not to happen, on behalf of organizations you do not currently belong to (much less have any kind of leadership role with). Right now Phil Graves is wondering if he's going to be making a trip up to Providence trapped in your trunk.

EFT typically has a mid-Atlantic mirror and I'm sure this year will be no exception.

I am very much interested in playing in this. Of course, I still need to see if I can drag along a VT team.

I only was expressing my personal wishes, and you're doing nothing productive by belittling me with events that occured in high school. Now by doing this, you are not only making me not want to play quizbowl, but I don't need to attend a Mid-Atlantic-Mirror to be attacked by you Chris. I apologize if I again offended you by only wishing to attend this event without having to go through the whole past bullshit process that was lack of interest from my teamates in high school.

I too would like to express interest as I know the merits of these writers and EFT2 was my first college tournament. This will be a great warmup to play as Dartmouth without having to face Guy and Ian. However, if Zach Foster comes to the Mid-Atlantic Mirror as part of a GMU team, I will head South to see this.

I just want don't someone attacking me over this. I would think you all would have ignored me if I mean so fucking little to all of you, because honestly I love quizbowl, but I don't need to deal with all this damn bullshit because I wish to attend a collegiate event ( A novice event nonetheless). Overall I would attend the Mid-Atlantic Mirror instead, but again I believe you don't understand my situation in high school was more than just financial issues, and severe lack of interest from my teamates

Nobody is attacking you dude and this really isn't a lot of "bullshit," as you said.

The gist of Chris' message was that when you are part of a collegiate program, it is best to consult with your teammates before offering up, even in passing, rumblings that you might be playing this at a particular site. It's great to be interested in it, but unless you yourself personally have plans to drive somewhere and play solo/free agent, you have to work with the program.

Also, I hope you play a lot of quizbowl! It's fun!

Is that discount just for travel, or will EFT be debuting a "trunk discount" for Phil Graves and/or Charles Meigs?

Nah, it'd be more fulfilling to see him superpower a tossup on The Making Of The Representative For Planet 8 or perhaps one on "Symphonies of Phillip Glass."

Hey all,

EFT is less than two months away and I think it's time for a host update. So far, the following mirrors of EFT have are planned (presumptive contact name in parentheses):

University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign (Trygve Meade)
University of Minnesota (Andrew Hart)
University of South Carolina (Eric Douglas)
University of Toronto (Jason Dickson)
University of Texas - Austin (Eric Kwartler)

We are still looking for mirrors for the following regions: West, Northwest, mid-Atlantic, and Florida. We could probably also have a mirror in the south somewhere between USC and Texas for those teams. If you are interested in mirroring EFT, please get in touch with myself and Dennis Jang.

Seriously, 5 hours?
1) It's college, college roadtrips are fun.
2) It's quiz bowl. Meaning, you will probably have to drive, fly, or host. Instead of whining on this forum, maybe you should consider hosting, or personally contacting these people who live by and host.

I'd enjoy coming and trying to play, but alas it looks like finances are interfering. Seems I'm limited to the NY Metro Area for tournaments.

Regretfully I won't be able to attend this year due to my being broke and not being able to travel too far. Perhaps I or possibly my team could attend if a TN/AL/maybe MS mirror was to occur

5 hours is a reasonable amount of driving to have to do to go to a quizbowl tournament. Now please, take this nonsense out of this thread.

I heard CRAZY RUMORS that Gonzaga might be interested in mirroring this for the Northwest site. If this is true, please contact myself and Dennis.

I sent you an e-mail Monday night about a UCLA mirror. Did you receive it? We would want to run it on Sunday the 4th.

Yes, I need to talk it over with Dennis; we haven't gotten any other West Coast bids so far, so unless something happens you'll likely be the host. We'll let you know soon.
