Hi Maryland,

If you need staffers for this (or any other event until mid-August), I'll be in the area and could help out. I'll admit to sucking as a reader, but would be happy to help out with scorekeeping or in any other way I can. I'm living in College Park this summer while interning at the NIH, and looking to make friends in the area. I played for Georgia past 4 years, so of course am familar with quizbowl and could be of use if you want another person to help out with tournaments, etc. You can contact me by email at [email protected] if wish.

Hey, here's the current tournament update:

We'll be starting registration at 8:30 in Jimenez 0105, with rounds hopefully starting by 9:15. Here's the current field:

Evan/Mehdi/George/Will
Eric/Ted/Dallas
Rutgers
Jonathan Magin, or The Power of Music
Jerry, Aaron, Chris, SteveJon
Maryland House
The Cosby Family (Cameron/Riley/Chris White/???)

Staff:
Evan Silberman (please? Nobody can say no to free pizza, right?)
Jonathan Graham
Christine Tarleton
Dan Greenstein
Tricia Southard

For those of you looking for parking, free parking is available in Lot 1 (see http://www.parking.umd.edu/themap/). It's just past Cole Field House, and a short walk from Jimenez.

Let me know if your status is not correct, or if you want to add to the field (note that you do not have to write a packet to play now). Chris White and David Seal, could you confirm your status for this weekend?

Hey, I am told that people are still holding back from registering for this because of concerns about packet writing/mirror fees. As per:
Charlie Dees wrote:Yeah, I finally just don't care about late penalties for this or having all the teams from mirror sites send in packets, although I still would appreciate you doing this, or at least sending in a partial packet of 6/6 or 12/12 whatever you want to write.
You do NOT need to write a packet, and will NOT be charged ludicrous fees to play at this tournament. Everyone in the area who is otherwise interested is encouraged to sign up - we'll accommodate this as much as possible, but please let me know. Please note Charlie would surely love any small amount of questions you might be able to chip in, so kick him an email if you're able to do that.

So, as I am doing some financial planning if you will, how much will it cost for a free agent (i.e., someone who hasn't written any questions) to play? Also, is EuroFest (presumably still happening on Saturday?) going to be the normal $15 or $20? Any light someone could shed on this would be appreciated. The money issue is also important as I might be able to talk a Cosby high schooler to attend her first college tournament if it doesn't cost too much.

I guess we'll be applying something along the lines of standard shorthand fees (especially if people are paying out of pocket). If you're playing this event solo or with one other person, you certainly won't be paying full fare, and if you want to email me and beg for some kind of special deal for a worthy cause or something, I guess you could give that a shot.

EDIT:

Eurofest will probably happen after this event, and be $15/person.

I can now confirm I am coming, as is Riley from Cosby High. We are both free agents, though it would be nice to play together. When do we have to be there? "Quizbowl 8" or can we get there just before 9?

In my mind these are the same thing. Uh, if you're there before 9, you'll be fine, but people who aren't risk being glared at fleetingly.

EDIT: No seriously do not show up after 9.

Hey, is there anyone playing this tournament who would be able to staff on Sunday? We seem a bit thinly stretched at the moment.

Ok, looks like we'll be running Eurofest Saturday night. The exact format is TBA, but will very likely be doubles.

The most recent field update is running, but for reference the (likely final) field is:

Evan/Mehdi/George/Will
Eric/Ted/Dallas
Rutgers
Jonathan Magin, or The Power of Music
Jerry, Aaron, Chris, SteveJon
Maryland House
The Cosby Family (Cameron/Riley/Chris White/???)

The plan now is to run a round robin with a bye as multiple teams here wrote packets, then collapse the house team (likely onto the Cosby/Magin teams) and run a 6-team round robin again, with advantaged finals as needed.

Quick Results:

After some creative format-shuffling, we ended with a three-way tie at 7-2 between Jerry/me/Aaron, Eric/Ted/Dallas/Dan Puma, and Magin. The Mehdi/Evan/Will/George team, Rutgers, and Cameron/Chris White/Riley finished 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively.

Based on ppg, Magin and the Mukherjee team played off, and Mukherjee's team won (I think by about 150). Our two teams then played a one-game final, which the Mukherjee team won in a performance whose excellence was only eclipsed by our own team's hilariously failure.

Full, 12 round stats should go up tomorrow when I get them from Christine (thanks a whole, whole lot for offering to help on such short notice, by the way). I'll try to post them tomorrow (or I guess, this) morning before we start Fake Trashionals.

The set had all of the issues, both logistical and qualitative, that you would have expected given everything that was going on. It ended up being tolerable (at times enjoyable, at others, maddening). It's never good when you play 19-tossup finals, but we ran our tournament, people buzzed in and said the anhere you go.swers and points were earned. As Jerry said, we played quizbowl, an activity which is notably better than not playing quizbowl.

EUROFEST:

We were too tired to run anything but 6 rounds of Eurofest, which saw the Magin/Evan Adams team hold an advantage over Jerry/Chris WHite and then myself/Jack Kennedy another game behind. I would have liked to have made an actual event of this but given the delays and everything, it wasn't going to fly.

Final note (PLEASE READ): If you have not paid for this tournament, you should do that. I've talked to some people about paying tomorrow, etc., but I've only been paid in full by Rutgers and Jerry (the latter as an individual). Everyone who played Eurofest owes $15, and everyone who played Missouri Open owes their fraction of the base fee, since nobody else brought buzzers (this is, for the record, $30/person). Aaron Rosenberg is, at the moment, the only person getting the staff discount for tomorrow, but if you want to come staff, feel free. Otherwise pay up chumps.

There were 19 tossups in the finals? I am counting through right now and I don't see any missing numbers or missing tossups in the document I sent you.

There was a L'Orfeo repeat (the question was slightly different, but Aaron and Ted seemed to remember many of the clues) and no extras.

Huh, I guess that was missed in the late editing of the Rutgers packet, and I do really apologize for that then, especially because we had a lot of replacement Fine Arts to use instead.
