IMO, frequently the people who say they didn't like it generally wouldn't have benefited from it much in the first place. I think it's a good crash course for learning the canon. I'm of the opinion that the best way to learn the canon and improve as a player is to aimlessly peruse old packets while bored.

I got good by playing solo packets against my dad/friends during xmas break one year. We just went through the 05 maryland Spring classic (excellent packets) and it just sorta stuck. That and just paying attention in class is incredibly helpful
