Fall Novice Mirror at Maggie Walker on 10/10

Post by Blackboard Monitor Vimes »

Maggie L. Walker Governor's School in Richmond, VA will be hosting a mirror of the Fall Novice Tournament on October 10, 2009. This set is a collaboration between a number of high school and college quizbowl players, is being edited by Charlie Rosenthal, Zhao Zhang, and myself, and is being overseen by Andy Watkins, Charlie Dees, and Gautam Kandlikar. This set contains no computational math and further information can be found here.

Field Restriction:
We are allowing teams consisting of players in their first or second year of high school competition, with the exception that middle schoolers may play even if they are 8th graders entering their third year of competing against high schoolers. Feel free to contact me if you believe you have a player or players meriting an exception.

Fee structure:
Each team: $40
Buzzer Discount: -$10
Staff Discount: -$10
Travel Discount (over 200 mi traveled): -$10 (there will ideally be enough mirrors that this will be unnecessary)
Minimum Fee: $10

This tournament will have a field cap of some kind, but that unfortunately has to be determined by how much staff we have, so I'll have a better idea after school starts on September 8. An informational email will be sent out to teams on our mailing list closer to that date as well. Edit: this is finally happening today, thank you for your patience.

Please register here so that you are in our official records. Thanks.

If you have any questions/comments, feel free to either post in this thread or contact me at gsacdirector AT gmail DOT com.

TJ will probably bring one or more teams composed of those of us who are not working on the set.

I will probably be bringing the middle school/freshman team down for this.

Quick question: Since I started playing in seventh grade, I am ineligible for this tournament, correct? (i.e., this is a different set of rules than those applied for HAVOC, for which any sophomore is eligible)

Yeah, I'm not going to count middle school play against playing this.

Confirmed St. Anselm's plans for this event:

Jacob Wasserman and I will be coming down to Gov to play this event together. Everyone else in the program who is eligible is going to play at Whitman two weeks later.

Registered one team and one buzzer set! And you know i would love to help read.

Got a small group of kids excited for this... even though they know the win-loss record is not going to be the main goal for the day (and it might not be that good). Yay positive thinking.

Spotswood was the latest registration as of yesterday, or so Dr. Barnes told me. Thanks for the info, Matt. I'll note that if we get belong some number of teams that I'm not yet sure of, we may have to look into moving the tournament to Collegiate so we don't lose money because of fees associated with our building....so, please, anyone on the fence, register soon so we can figure that out! Thanks.

I just signed up three teams and we may have enough for a forth team. I'll let you know when these kids get back to me, hopefully by tomorrow. I will have the final number by early next week though.

I'm more than happy to volunteer to read and/or Mr. Flint. If you need more buzzers than two sets, let us know. We can probably swing more, if you need them.

We don't currently own a working buzzer set, so any that you can bring is great. You can never have too many buzzers. At this point I think we have enough staff, but I'll let you know if that changes. Thanks a lot.

Why thank you.

Actually it's really just because this weekend works better for us... people are busy on the Whitman weekend, so, it just wasn't going to work. Yeah it's far, but really it's only 3-3½ hours. That's nothing. It's a fun day, there's a Chinese place north of Fredericksburg that we're really looking forward to anyway. Don't take that away from us!

For now, put GDS down for one (1) team, one (1) buzzer, and one (1) qualified moderator. Official through-the-website registration will happen once a few details are ironed out on our end.

EDIT: This information is confirmed. Given my involvement with the set, any opportunity to staff in a game room would be distinctly appreciated.

One more question:

Having never been to Maggie Walker before, I am unsure of lunch options. Is there food available within walking distance? Stand-in team driver my mom needs to know if she will be needed during lunch or if she can go hang out with my grandma during that time.

We usually walk downtown (5-10 minutes) to Subway or pizza or something. It's really kinda close to the same places we ate at during Cato/Taco, Aidan. That would be a walk to go quite that far, though.

What time are we looking to get things started, Sarah? We obviously have a long drive (i know, it's our own fault for only being able to go to this one and not Whitman, but where's the award for Longest Distance Traveled like at reunions??) so we'd like to know when we have to leave. We're shooting for like 4:45 or 5am...

Colin and Cole Academy is down to just Colin, so if you were planning to bring along some subs, up to 3 of them can join that team.

I know I said in the email that we'd probably run a card system, but we could only work that out to 9 games (counting a playoff format), so we're actually going to end up running two brackets of seven with a cross-bracket exhibition game.

After the initial Round Robin, the top 3 teams in each bracket will play the top three teams from the other bracket, followed by the finals/a placement game. The bottom four in each bracket will play the bottom four from the other bracket, giving all teams 11 games, with one packet leftover to break any ties we may have.

That should be fine. I worry a little about the brackets and having them somewhat balanced, but it's probably not a big deal.

This has now become two brackets of 6, with Tucker down to 1 team and Colin playing with St. Anselm's. The top 3 teams from each bracket will play another 6-team round robin, as will the bottom 6, leaving us 2 packets for tiebreakers and finals.

Clover Hill defeated Cave Spring B 195-90 in a tiebreaker game to join St. Anselm's, GDS, Collegiate, Tucker, and Cave Spring A in the top bracket.
