TJIAT (10/17/09)
Re: TJIAT (10/17/09)
There will also be a cross-bracket game to determine the final rankings, so teams are actually guaranteed 11 games.

Even 2nd tier and 3rd tier?? That's pretty cool.
Any chance you could share what the brackets look like?

Looking good. Aside from not knowing much about maybe half the teams at this thing, that looks very balanced and fair. Nice work. See everybody tomorrow!!

Apparently Gov beat GDS 430-220. There were some issues with Taft throughout the day, which is why some of the stats are missing, or so I've been told.Edward Powers wrote:Any score on the GDS---Maggie Walker final? And does anyone know what happened to the stats?

Gov beat GDS 430-220 to win, and St. Anselms beat Whitman 425-40 for third. Stats are posted (a few games are missing; we're working on that). Thanks so much to everyone who came, and also to Jonah Greenthal and Sandy Huang for suggesting and giving us the DAFT set. The set had some issues but was mostly good, and things ran smoothly despite the problems with TAFT and the teams that dropped during the playoffs. Thanks again to everyone who came and staffed.

Thanks to TJ for a good tournament. Things ran rather smoothly, except for a little wait due to confusion about placement games. The set definitely had some issues, but it was infinitely better than no set at all. Thanks to Dunbar for letting TJ mirror DAFT.
Congrats to Matt Jackson for being insanely good and to Gov for winning their high school level debut this year.

Two things.
First:
I will have to look through the scoresheets more carefully, but I believe this was the order of finish in the playoff brackets:
1) Gov A
2) GDS A
3) St. Anselm's
4) Whitman
5) Walter Johnson
6) Caesar Rodney
7) San Dimas (Blake) (won 7th place by default because Langley A left)
8) Langley A
9) Richard Montgomery
10) GDS B
11&12) Robinson and Woodson, I don't know what order
Second:
GDS, are you by any chance missing a bus? As of 6:50 PM today, there was a Georgetown Day School bus sitting in the front parking lot of TJ.

Thanks to TJ for running a pretty smooth tournament despite the question debacle. I thought the Dunbar set had its issues, but definitely wasn't a bad effort at all.
Congrats to Gov....for being who we thought they were, and not letting any team crack 100 except for GDS A. Also congrats to the rest of the top finishers.

Yeah, definitely well run. Some set issues but nothing super-major. Great tournament. Congrats to Gov A, who I didn't get to play, and GDS A, who continues to be very good. Also, congrats to St. Anselm's for a very good 3rd place showing, Whitman for a good 4th, CR for another close win, and RM for a very good game.

Congrats to TJ for running a successful tournament despite the question issues, and congrats to Maggie Walker for proving themselves to be far and away the best team to hit the DC area since...I dunno, 2005?
With regards to the question set, it definitely came through that Dunbar's heart was in the right place when they wrote and provided 12 packets of pyramidal quizbowl questions which were slightly longer and more difficult than regular high school difficulty; a majority of the questions met that goal well and the set's overall quality was decent-to-good. And I know it's hard to house-write a tournament set. However, there were definitely serious issues with this set that need to be resolved before it gets used again next week, including some repeated subjects, a plethora of bonus parts so easy that they practically handed any team with an awake team member 10 points, another plethora of bonus parts so hard that they'd virtually never come up in quizbowl before (including some interesting-but-impossible works associated with canonical figures), the assumption that not-very-memorable quotes could be used as clues to identify people who said them, some sharp difficulty cliffs, and odd non-grammar in some sentences. Most of these issues should be quick fixes; others may require the replacement of a bonus part with one of more appropriate difficulty.
EDIT: Oh, and on the subject of our wayward bus? Don't worry about it. The bus that dropped us off appears to have broken down immediately after it did drop us off, so we took another bus back to school. That bus will be removed from TJ's property to get fixed sometime soon.

If people could direct criticism towards the below link, it would be greatly appreciated. It's so I have a thread I can easily locate in the case that fixes need to be made or when I start writing next year's (more polished and better?!) set.

Thanks to TJ for running a good tournament(and even pulling one off, given the question fiasco) and congrats to Gov for winning so well, to Matt Jackson for putting up insane numbers, and to that really impressive kid from Longfellow(presumably Jonathan Leidenhammer based on the stats) for doing so well as a middle schooler playing a regular high school tournament. The questions were acceptable but had serious issues, and that matter should be treated in the dedicated thread.

Re: TJIAT (10/17/09)
I'm glad everyone enjoyed the tournament. Hopefully we will be able to build on our success and run an even better tournament on 1/30/10, which you guys should also attend.
Although this tournament would not have been possible without Sandy Huang and those who contributed to DAFT and numerous NHS volunteers, staff, and members of the quizbowl team at TJ, I just want to personally thank a few people who put so much effort into making this tournament really really good, when it could have been really really bad. In no particular order: our two wonderful TDs Olivia and Thalia, Diana Gerr, Greyson Lewis, and Stephen Eltinge, who was probably the only person not to flip a shit the entire day.

You are (or at least I am when I try to look) still getting some issues with Taft. Thanks for a nice tournament. I wish we'd have done a little better, but so be it. Also thanks to the TJ folks who tried (and succeeded) in finding Wilson and another team buzzers for what was honestly a meaningless consolation game. Regarding Taft: I'm reasonably sure that all the games we have are entered into the "Games" page, but there are still problems with some of the more useful parts (scoreboard & team standings especially). We're not sure right now what, if anything, we can do about that, but we'll try to do what we can.

Hey guys, if your team didn't pay at the tournament, make your check or purchase order payable to TJHSST Quizbowl c/o Jean Stevens and send it through the mail. If you're writing a check, make sure to specify what school you're from. Alternately, you could pay us at the next tournament we see you at, provided that that's fairly soon. Thanks.

Re: TJIAT (10/17/09)
The errors which were preventing some pages in TAFT from loading properly have been fixed, so functional stats are now located here. There are some minor errors, mostly regarding subs being recorded as having 20 TUH instead of 0, but those should be fixed in the near future.

Re: TJIAT (10/17/09)
I am very pleased to announce on behalf of PACE that the TJIAT is the third tournament to be certified as platinum this year. This means that an additional four teams qualify for the 2010 NSC, and each of the eight qualifying teams receive an additional $40 off their entry fee. Congratulations to the group behind this tournament for their great work!

Neat. We've never legitimately qualified for PACE before. It's a shame that we won't be able to attend it.
